Food and refuse storage requirements at specific campgrounds on the Bridgeport Ranger District. The purpose of this order is for public health and safety, the protection of wildlife, and to reduce the numbers of bear incidents in the area.

Food and Refuse Storage Restrictions

PROHIBITIONS

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited in the campgrounds and area as described in this order, in the Bridgeport Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest beginning August 22, 2009 at 12:01 A.M. and ending when this Order is rescinded.

Possessing or storing any food or refuse, unless stored inside vehicles, in the trunk, or out of sight with the vehicles windows rolled up, or counter balanced at least 15 feet above the ground and 10 feet horizontally from a tree trunk, in the Campgrounds and areas listed below. [36 CFR 261.58(cc)]

Honeymoon Flat Campground
Crags Campground

Possessing or storing any food or refuse, unless stored in the government provided container designed to prevent access by bears, in the Campground listed below. [36 CFR 261.58(cc)]

EXEMPTIONS

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(e), each of the following is exempt from this order.

Persons with a permit specifically exempting them from the effect of this Order
Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.

AREA DESCRIBED

The Campgrounds and dispersed camping areas along Forest Road 139 as listed above in A. Prohibitions, on the Bridgeport Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. As shown on Exhibit A, Map, and incorporated as part of this ORDER.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this order is for Public Health and Safety, the protection of Wildlife, and to reduce the numbers of Bear incidents relating to human uses in specified areas on the Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

IMPLEMENTATION

This Special Order implementing Food and Refuse Storage Restrictions is effective at 12:01 A.M. on August 22, 2009, and shall remain in effect until rescinded.
Exhibit A, Map, Exhibit B, Definitions are attached and incorporated into this ORDER.

Violation of these prohibitions is punishable as a class B misdemeanor, by a fine of not more than $5000.00 for an individual or $10,000.00 for an organization and/or imprisonment of not more than 6 months [Title 16 USC 551, 18 USC 3571(b)(6), Title 18 USC 3581 (b)(7)].

Overview

Paha Campground is located just 10 miles from Bridgeport, California, next to Robinson Creek at an elevation of 7,000 feet. The Twin Lakes area is close by, offering boating, fishing, hiking and horseback riding opportunities.

Reservations are non-transferable. Re-selling of reservations will render the reservation invalid. If you hold an invalid reservation, you will not be permitted to camp on the site.

Recreation

Robinson Creek offers good rainbow trout fishing and can be easily accessed from within the campground. Numerous hiking trails are in the vicinity, including the popular Robinson Creek Trail.

Facilities

The campground contains several single-family sites, one of which is ADA accessible, and there are two double sites and one furnished yurt. All sites are equipped with picnic tables, food storage lockers and campfire rings with grills. Flush toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. Firewood is available for purchase.

Robinson Creek South Campground is nearby, where educational programs are held at its amphitheater on weekends from July 4 through Labor Day.

Natural Features

The campground is situated alongside Robinson Creek, where a forest of massive Jeffrey pines towers over the site, offering partial shade. Lodgepole pines, sagebrush and summer wildflowers dot the landscape.

Nearby Attractions

Upper and Lower Twin Lakes are nearby, offering beautiful mountain scenery, boating, canoeing and fishing for Kokanee salmon and rainbow and brown trout. The rugged and scenic Hoover Wilderness Area can be accessed from the Twin Lakes area and offers additional trails for hiking and horseback riding.

Charges & Cancellations

Reservation sites will be held until check out time (12 pm) the day following your arrival date. Sites must be occupied by the checkout time of that following day to hold a reservation or the site will be forfeited and released to other guests. Once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the Campground Manager will be able to modify your reservation.

Fees

Camping fees for single sites include one vehicle. (Double sites and yurt include 2 vehicles). Extra vehicle fee of $6 per vehicle per night is due at the kiosk in the campground. Extra vehicle parking is limited. Vehicles must fit on asphalt pad of campsite. See host for alternative parking if needed.

Directions

Take U.S. Highway 395 through Bridgeport. Turn south on Twin Lakes Road at the Shell gas station. Travel 9.6 miles on Twin Lakes Road. Turn left into the campground.

Stay Limit

Check in from 2 PM, check out by 12 PM.

I always love camping at PAHA. It's one of my favorites. I've always had good experiences with Camp Hosts there. But not this year. I go camping in the Sierra Nevadas from Tom's Place (south of Mammoth) up to Tahoe/Truckee to Sierra City region, and I go every other weekend. I have all my favorite spots that I've been going to for years and I book many of these sites 6 months in advance. This year, the Camp Hosts have been annoying AF. The constant surveillance and being busy bodies has been off the charts. Constantly bugging us, constantly driving around in their golf carts "keeping tabs" on all of us. Seriously. You give these guys a little bit of power and they get ridiculous. They act like they own the place. These "hospitality" contracts that the Forest Service uses are ridiculous. It's the reason camping has become so expensive and the "hosts" are bossy and act like you've never been camping before. Just leave me the F alone. I know exactly how to deal with bears, and I know camping etiquette. We don't need to be wrangled. Just leave us alone so we can enjoy nature in peace.

Totally enjoyed our 2 nights camping here. Great location, well kept campground. Appreciated the large bear box to keep our cooler and food as we were visited by a bear one night! Would definitely stay here again.

This is a real hidden gem. The camp host Kimo makes this place special. Never left a review on the host, but a really great human that made our stay that much more memorable. Bears are definitely active, and not afraid to come looking for food so keep your stuff locked up. Hope to come back soon!

The twin Lakes area is amazing! And the campgrounds along Robinson Creek are fabulous all of them! But my very favorite is Paha Campground! The Campground host Keno is such an amazing person and keeps the campground in excellent condition! I will be back for another week starting Sunday. I can’t wait!!
