Food and Refuse Storage Restrictions
PROHIBITIONS
Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited in the campgrounds and area as described in this order, in the Bridgeport Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest beginning August 22, 2009 at 12:01 A.M. and ending when this Order is rescinded.
- Possessing or storing any food or refuse, unless stored inside vehicles, in the trunk, or out of sight with the vehicles windows rolled up, or counter balanced at least 15 feet above the ground and 10 feet horizontally from a tree trunk, in the Campgrounds and areas listed below. [36 CFR 261.58(cc)]
- Virginia Creek Dispersed Campground, along Forest Road 139
- Trumbull Campground
- Buckeye Campground
- Honeymoon Flat Campground
- Crags Campground
- Possessing or storing any food or refuse, unless stored in the government provided container designed to prevent access by bears, in the Campground listed below. [36 CFR 261.58(cc)]
- Green Creek Campground
- Robinson Creek Campground
- Paha Campground
- Lower Twin Lakes Campground
EXEMPTIONS
Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(e), each of the following is exempt from this order.
- Persons with a permit specifically exempting them from the effect of this Order
- Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
AREA DESCRIBED
The Campgrounds and dispersed camping areas along Forest Road 139 as listed above in A. Prohibitions, on the Bridgeport Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. As shown on Exhibit A, Map, and incorporated as part of this ORDER.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this order is for Public Health and Safety, the protection of Wildlife, and to reduce the numbers of Bear incidents relating to human uses in specified areas on the Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
IMPLEMENTATION
- This Special Order implementing Food and Refuse Storage Restrictions is effective at 12:01 A.M. on August 22, 2009, and shall remain in effect until rescinded.
- Exhibit A, Map, Exhibit B, Definitions are attached and incorporated into this ORDER.
Violation of these prohibitions is punishable as a class B misdemeanor, by a fine of not more than $5000.00 for an individual or $10,000.00 for an organization and/or imprisonment of not more than 6 months [Title 16 USC 551, 18 USC 3571(b)(6), Title 18 USC 3581 (b)(7)].

Overview
Buckeye campground provides a quiet camping experience. The campground is on Buckeye Creek and is shaded by Jeffrey and Lodgepole pines. Hiking along Buckeye Creek into the nearby Hoover Wilderness. Hiking on Eagle Creek to the flanks of Eagle Mountain. Buckeye hot springs (140 degrees F) is just east of the campground. The spring comes out above the creek, over a rock overhang, which creates a cave-like area in the pool. Another small spring is upstream. This is a very popular spring year round. Fishing in Buckeye Creek offers different kind of fishing experience to get away from crowds.
Facilities
This tent and small vehicle friendly campground offers single family campsites that include picnic tables and campfire rings. Vault toilets and garbage service is provided. Firewood is available for purchase from the host. The campground does not have potable water.
Natural Features
The Buckeye campground is at an elevation of 7000 feet.
Caution: Black bears frequent the area; all food must be kept in approved containers.
Opening and closing dates depend heavily upon weather conditions.
