## Overview

Gold Lake Campground (6,445 feet) is on the east shore of Gold Lake, a

boating, fishing and hiking. A network of over 30 miles of maintained trails
branch out across the area, and the Pacific Crest trail can be easily reached
from the trail system. Many of the trails are open to hiking, biking and
horseback riding, including the 1-mile Grassy Lakes Trail, accessible from the
campground.

Gold Lake, where a boat ramp is provided, visitors enjoy convenient access to
boating and fishing. Once on the water, anglers won't have any trouble
trolling for brown and rainbow trout and Mackinaws in the cool, clear waters.

A popular location with access to the backcountry, visitors should carefully
review what this facility provides. This campground is not a luxury
destination and may not meet your comfort level. This is a rustic campground
with no utilities, water, hookups, trash service, or restroom facilities.
Campers must pack out all their sanitation and trash. Families may decide one
of the other campgrounds nearby is better suited to meet their needs and
expectations.

Visitors staying at the 4x4 campground will be within the Lakes Basin
Recreation Area that requires camping within developed campsites. For those
seeking a more dispersed experience, campers must ensure they are well outside
the boundaries of the recreation area. The Lakes Basin & Sierra Buttes Map
illustrates where boundaries and forest roads are found. These maps are
available at the USGS Store online or from Plumas National Forest Offices.

## Recreation

Visitors often use this campground as a home base to enjoy water sports,
mountain biking, hiking, fishing, hunting and a host of other activities.

The OHV access road continues beyond the campground and onto the adjacent
Tahoe National Forest. From here, other roads lead north toward "A-Tree",
LaPorte and Plumas Eureka State Park, southwest towards Downieville and Sierra
City and south toward Packer Lake and Sardine Lakes. Make sure to take a
suitable vehicle, a map, and extra food and water.

## Facilities

A boulder strewn OHV road is the primary access to this campground.
Experienced drivers that can self-extricate or make emergency repairs may be
needed. Passenger or sport utility vehicles are not recommended.

Alternatively, boat campers may access the campground from the boat launch
facility on the east side of the lake. However, there are no boat facilities
at the 4x4 campground. Boaters should be aware that strong, gusty afternoon
winds are common and can hinder small watercraft.

Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring and bear locker for food storage.
Our bears love your food, toothpaste and scented lip balm more than you do. If
you don't want to share your supplies, we recommend you use the bear locker.

The popularity of this facility combined with a broken, unserviceable restroom
have resulted in resource damage and unhealthy, unsafe conditions. The
dilapidated restrooms have been removed. In an effort to keep this campground
open, the Forest Service has enacted some temporary measures until a cost
effective, technological improvement of restroom facilities that can handle
extreme environmental conditions is found.

These measures include making the campground reservation only to allow more
administrative control. **All campers must now arrive with a plan that
addresses the safe removal of all solid human waste.** This is best
accomplished when using Waste Alleviating Gel Bags (WAG bags). These are
readily available online or at sporting goods outlets. We understand this is
not an ideal situation, but we are asking the public's help in improving
conditions at this campground.

As the Lakes Basin Recreation Area name implies, the region has many crystal
clear alpine lakes to explore. Glacial carved granite peaks and ridges,
sunrises and sunsets reflected in the waters over Gold Lake, the whisper of
pines rustling in the wind or a glimpse of a shy doe will leave an indelible
memory and entice you to return again and again.

The region is rich in history that includes Native American use, gold
discovery, westward migration, forestry, railroads, grazing, and agriculture.
You may even find evidence of those that travelled here decades or centuries

Lightning Tree Campground (5,800 feet) is one of three family-friendly
campgrounds located in the Lake Davis Recreation Area. The lake was formed by
damming Grizzly Creek in 1967. The purpose of the lake was to provide water
for the town of Portola, improve area fishing and provide recreation
opportunities. The 32 miles of shoreline has several boat launch facilities
and fishing access points. Lightning Tree Campground is a great place to serve
as hub for family fun and recreation. At the end of the day return to this
home away from home to relax around the campfire.

<h2>Overview</h2>
<p>Lightning Tree Campground (5,800 feet) is one of three family-friendly campgrounds located in the Lake Davis Recreation Area. The lake was formed by damming Grizzly Creek in 1967. The purpose of the lake was to provide water for the town of Portola, improve area fishing and provide recreation opportunities. The 32 miles of shoreline has several boat launch facilities and fishing access points. Lightning Tree Campground is a great place to serve as hub for family fun and recreation. At the end of the day return to this home away from home to relax around the campfire. </p>
<h2>Recreation</h2>
<p>In addition to camping, the area offers a wide variety of popular water-related activities, including fishing, boating and swimming. Numerous fishing access points are located around the perimeter of the lake and anglers will find rainbow and brown trout, bass and catfish. A boat ramp is located nearby.<br><br><br><br>Mountain biking, hiking, hunting and wildlife viewing are also available in the area. During winter months, visitors enjoy ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.</p>

<p>The campground offers more than three dozen single and double capacity campsites, available for tent and RV camping. Some accessible campsites are available. Most sites are available on a first come basis and the rest are open for reservation up to six months in advance. Coin-operated showers are available 4 miles away at Grasshopper Flat Campground. <br></p>

<p>Lake Davis is situated in the hills north of the town of Portola in the Plumas National Forest. Smith Peak State Game Refuge to the south and west of the lake is a great place for bird watching, nature viewing, photography and exploring. The Feather River Ranger District manages 8 family campgrounds around Little
Grass Valley Reservoir. There are approximately 323 camping units. Campsites
in Red Feather, Running Deer, Little Beaver parts of Loop A & B and the
southern half of Wyandotte, and Horse Camp may be reserved through
www.recreation.gov (1-877-444-6777) All other campgrounds are available on a
first-come, first server basis.

Each campground has piped water. Trailer sites are available, as well as walk-
in tent campsites. Trailers of up to 40 feet can be accommodated in some of
the camping units. No hookups are provided. There are 2 RV dump stations, one
near Tooms Boat Launch, and one near Red Feather.  Facilities are usually open
from Memorial Day to October.

Little Grass Valley Recreation Area offers opportunities for many more
recreation experiences for visitors. Three boat launch ramps provide access to
the water for fishing, water-skiing, sailing, or simply touring on boats.
There is a wheel chair accessible fishing ramp by at the dam. Two swim beaches
provide excellent swimming and picnicking opportunities. The Lakeshore Trail
(13 miles) winds around the entire lake, open for horseback riding, mountain
bike riding and hiking. Visitors may also enjoy watching wildlife, campfire
programs, or exploring nearby historic gold mining towns.

lake and is open for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Additional

nearby historic gold mining towns.
