## Overview

Gold Lake 4x4 campground in northeast Plumas County, CA lies at 6,400 feet in
elevation within the Plumas National Forest. The mountains, forest and lake
setting provide a picturesque landscape for relaxation, adventure and
exploration.

A popular location with access to the backcountry, visitors should carefully
review what this facility provides. This campground is not a luxury
destination and may not meet your comfort level. This is a rustic campground
with no utilities, water, hookups, trash service, or restroom facilities.
Campers must pack out all their sanitation and trash. Families may decide one
of the other campgrounds nearby is better suited to meet their needs and
expectations.

Visitors staying at the 4x4 campground will be within the Lakes Basin
Recreation Area that requires camping within developed campsites. For those
seeking a more dispersed experience, campers must ensure they are well outside
the boundaries of the recreation area. The Lakes Basin & Sierra Buttes Map
illustrates where boundaries and forest roads are found. These maps are
available at the USGS Store online or from Plumas National Forest Offices.

## Recreation

Visitors often use this campground as a home base to enjoy water sports,
mountain biking, hiking, fishing, hunting and a host of other activities.

The OHV access road continues beyond the campground and onto the adjacent
Tahoe National Forest. From here, other roads lead north toward "A-Tree",
LaPorte and Plumas Eureka State Park, southwest towards Downieville and Sierra
City and south toward Packer Lake and Sardine Lakes. Make sure to take a
suitable vehicle, a map, and extra food and water.

## Facilities

A boulder strewn OHV road is the primary access to this campground.
Experienced drivers that can self-extricate or make emergency repairs may be
needed. Passenger or sport utility vehicles are not recommended.

Alternatively, boat campers may access the campground from the boat launch
facility on the east side of the lake. However, there are no boat facilities
at the 4x4 campground. Boaters should be aware that strong, gusty afternoon
winds are common and can hinder small watercraft.

Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring and bear locker for food storage.
Our bears love your food, toothpaste and scented lip balm more than you do. If
you don't want to share your supplies, we recommend you use the bear locker.

The popularity of this facility combined with a broken, unserviceable restroom
have resulted in resource damage and unhealthy, unsafe conditions. The
dilapidated restrooms have been removed. In an effort to keep this campground
open, the Forest Service has enacted some temporary measures until a cost
effective, technological improvement of restroom facilities that can handle
extreme environmental conditions is found.

These measures include making the campground reservation only to allow more
administrative control. **All campers must now arrive with a plan that
addresses the safe removal of all solid human waste.** This is best
accomplished when using Waste Alleviating Gel Bags (WAG bags). These are
readily available online or at sporting goods outlets. We understand this is
not an ideal situation, but we are asking the public's help in improving
conditions at this campground.

As the Lakes Basin Recreation Area name implies, the region has many crystal
clear alpine lakes to explore. Glacial carved granite peaks and ridges,
sunrises and sunsets reflected in the waters over Gold Lake, the whisper of
pines rustling in the wind or a glimpse of a shy doe will leave an indelible
memory and entice you to return again and again.

The region is rich in history that includes Native American use, gold
discovery, westward migration, forestry, railroads, grazing, and agriculture.
You may even find evidence of those that travelled here decades or centuries

Grizzly Campground (5,777 feet) is one of three family-friendly campgrounds
located in the Lake Davis Recreation Area. The recreation area and its
namesake lake, Lake Davis provides the classic lake fishing experience. For
example, there are four boat launching facilities and many fishing access
points around the lake. Water skiing and jet skiing are not allowed on this

<p>In addition to camping, the area offers a wide variety of popular water-related activities, including fishing, boating and swimming. Numerous fishing access points are located around the perimeter of the lake and anglers will find rainbow and brown trout, bass and catfish. A boat ramp is located nearby.<br><br><br><br>Mountain biking, hiking, hunting and wildlife viewing are also available in the area. During winter months, visitors enjoy ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.</p>
<h2>Facilities</h2>
<p>The campground offers more than three dozen single and double capacity campsites, available for tent and RV camping. Some accessible campsites are available. Most sites are available on a first come basis and the rest are open for reservation up to six months in advance. Coin-operated showers are available 4 miles away at Grasshopper Flat Campground. <br></p>
<h2>Natural Features</h2>
<p>Lake Davis is situated in the hills north of the town of Portola in the Plumas National Forest. Smith Peak State Game Refuge to the south and west of the lake is a great place for bird watching, nature viewing, photography and exploring. Large sheep herding ranches used this area before the dam was build. Today, cattle trek across the rangeland meadows. Get a panoramic view of Lake Davis, Sierra Valley and peaks of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges from Smith Peak Fire Lookout.</p>

## Overview

Crocker Guard Station was built in 1912 as a home for Forest Service
personnel, and was later staffed as a fire station until the 1980s. The
historic Crocker Guard Station is located ten miles northeast of Portola,
California, at an elevation of 5,700 feet. Visitors will experience the
beautiful solitude of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Nearby recreational
opportunities include fishing, boating, swimming and hiking.

## Recreation

Crocker Campground is located adjacent to the Crocker Guard Station. This ten
unit campground is free of charge and has tables, fire rings and vault
toilets. The campground is the perfect place to expand your guest list or have
a campfire. Lake Davis Recreation Area is within three miles, offering a
variety of recreational opportunities where visitors can fish, boat, swim,
bike and hike. Hunting is a popular activity in the fall.

## Facilities

The house has four bedrooms with ten twin beds and mattresses including two
sets of bunk beds, a kitchen, dining room, living room and an outside vault
toilet building. Children will enjoy the large fenced in front yard. The
rental has propane operated lights, cook stove and heater. There is no
refrigerator. Cooking and eating utensils are provided. The house is equipped
with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers. Visitors must
bring drinking water. There is an outside hand pump with water for fire
protection. Guests should bring bedding, towels, flashlights, trash bags and
first aid kits. Visitors are responsible for cleaning the house, packing out
trash and locking up before departure.

The Guard Station is situated in a small meadow near an aspen grove surrounded
by a forest of pine trees.

include seasonal host (when staffed), water, flush toilets  and trash service
along with paved roads. Campsite amenities include picnic table and fire ring.
Local attractions include Pancake Beach, Chimney Rock, Fowler Peak and the
Pacific Crest Trail. Campers come prepared for water sport, hiking, nature
viewing, mountain biking and equestrian adventures. Others look forward to
relaxing in this wonderful campground.
