We were looking for a calm, mellow family camp out. We stayed in the campground and floated in the ponds and enjoyed the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, even though we we’re 15 minutes away from town.

Had such a wonderful first camping experience at Wheeler Gorge! The campsite was incredibly clean and well maintained, and we enjoyed ourselves so much that we booked another stay the day we got back. There’s something so relaxing about disconnecting, slowing down, and enjoying the open space. Already looking forward to going back!

This site is really spacious and had room for ~3 tents, maybe more depending on the footprint. We camped here in mid August, and unfortunately dealt with many yellowjackets that swarmed any time we were cooking. Occasionally, smell from the nearby pit toilet wafted over and was quite stinky. The creek was beautiful, and a short walk from the site. Very close to the highway, and as a result had lots of highway noise. There was a good amount of shade during the day, but not near the picnic table or fire pit until later evening.

The campground was clean, peaceful, and beautifully shaded. I spent a solo weekend at site 26, and it was surprisingly spacious — perfect for a larger family or anyone who wants room to spread out. The shade was great, and the site had easy access to both the creek and the restrooms.
If you’re bringing a big group, I highly recommend site 27. It’s even larger, nicely shaded, and well‑situated — though bringing a canopy is always a smart move.
Just a heads‑up: there’s no running water at the campsites, so make sure to pack plenty. Luckily, Ojai is only an 8–10 minute drive away if you need ice or supplies.
Overall, it’s a calm, relaxing campground — exactly the kind of place you can unwind and disconnect. I’ll definitely be going back.
