This 42-mile stretch of two-lane blacktop is one of the last and best-
preserved segments of the original Route 66, one of America's first
transcontinental highways. This portion of the highway once included one of
the most fearsome obstacles for "flatland" travelers in the 1930's: the
hairpin curves and steep grades of Sitgreaves Pass, which characterize Old
Route 66 as it makes its way over the Black Mountains of western Arizona.

The Monolith Garden Trail is an easy to moderate trail open to hikers,
mountain bikers, horseback riders and trail runners and is not universally-
accessible. This 8.5 mile series of loop trails is part of the **Cerbat
Foothills Recreation Area** trail system. The route meanders through Mohave
Desert vegetation and interesting volcanic rock formations.  
  
No water and little shade are available along the route. Monolith Garden Trail
connects with the Camp Beale Loop Trail (managed by the City of Kingman).

## Natural Features

The campground scenery features an adjacent canyon carved by the flow of Burro
Creek with other mountains and mesas visible in the background as well as a
diverse Sonoran desert plant community including saguaros, a variety of cholla
and barrel cacti, creosote bushes, Palo Verde trees, and catclaw. Nearby, on
the banks of Burro Creek, visitors will also see willow and cottonwood trees
as well as a wide-variety of riparian shrubs.

Wildlife is frequent in the campground and include occasional sightings of
desert bighorn sheep on the cliffs above Burro Creek and a variety of birds
including cactus wren, Gambel’s quail, Gila woodpecker, great horned owl,
great blue heron, Vermilion flycatcher, and cliff swallow to name a few.
Javelina, raccoons, coyotes, and foxes have been known to use the area as the
creek serves an important role in the harsh desert environment.

## Nearby Attractions

The public lands surrounding the Burro Creek Campground are readily available
for visitors interested in sightseeing via use of a four-wheel drive vehicle
along county-maintained dirt roads. These roads wind through a variety of
interesting geologic scenery combined with unique vegetative communities
including Sonoran and Mojave deserts intermingled with areas of interior
chaparral and pinyon-juniper woodlands. County roads are maintained regularly,
but it is always a good idea to check with the local BLM office prior to
planning your trip as well as exercising caution when travelling on any of
these unimproved dirt roads as visitors travel at their own risk.

The area, while desolate during the warm summer months, gives way to cooler
temperatures from October through April annually and provides exceptional
opportunities for hunting, off-highway vehicle use, wildlife watching,
photography, sightseeing, and a variety of other dispersed recreational
opportunities. Depending upon winter and spring precipitation, the area
surrounding the Burro Creek Campground provides visitors with excellent spring
wildflower displays March through May.

arrival both on-line and through the call center. A $10 service fee will be
withheld from any refund for a cancellation. Depending on when you cancel in

The Burro Creek Campground has started accepting reservations for the group
site, sites 7 & 9, and 10-17. Please check recreation.gov through the link on
this page prior to arriving at the campground to understand the reservation
process. Reservations must be made at least 7 days in advance of your arrival
at the site. Sites 1-6, 8, and 18-23 will not be impacted by this change and
remain available on a first-come first-serve basis.

Burro Creek Campground

Kingman Field Office

The 40,000-acre Wabayuma Peak Wilderness is located in Mohave County, 20 miles
southeast of Kingman, Arizona.  
  
This wilderness is dominated by the 7,601-foot **Wabayuma Peak**. A series of
massive ridges that extend from the peak in a semicircle to the north, south,
and west, plunge nearly 5,000 feet to the desert floor below. This extensive
elevation change accommodates a broad spectrum of ecosystems. The lower
reaches of the wilderness contain a mixture of Sonoran and Mohave Desert
vegetation. Upper elevations are covered with Arizona chaparral vegetation,
and ponderosa pine forests can be found on the mountain summits.  
  
The sheer size and scale of the rugged terrain guarantee a variety of
challenging and interesting hikes, backpacking trips, horseback rides and
nature study, and encourage extended overnight camping. Visitors can travel
through desert shrub and ponderosa pine in one day and are afforded the
opportunity for exceptional botanical and wildlife sightseeing within a
relatively small geographic area.

  * No legal access is possible to the north and northwest sides of the wilderness because access roads cross private property at several points.
  * A high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended for all access routes.
  * Water is generally available at springs indicated on topographic maps. Always purify any water found prior to use.
  * Summertime temperatures, even at the higher elevations, can be dangerous if you are not prepared. More moderate conditions are present between October and May, although snow can be present during winter months, which can make access to higher elevations difficult or impossible.

Wabayuma Peak Wilderness

The Mount Nutt Wilderness (28,080 acres) is located in Mohave County, 15 miles
west of Kingman, Arizona and 12 miles east of Bullhead City, Arizona. This
wilderness encompasses an eight-mile-long stretch of the central (and highest)
portion of the Black Mountains. Nutt Mountain, at 5,216 feet, presides over a
colorful and wild terrain. Along the main ridgeline, prominent mesas have been
cut into a series of steep maze-like canyons. Outward from the main ridgeline,
numerous huge volcanic plugs ring the entire wilderness.  
  
This wilderness is home to desert bighorn sheep. Scattered springs sustain
small oases of large cottonwoods, willows, and oaks. Hiking, camping, hunting,
photography, and rock scrambling opportunities are varied and challenging.

ponderosa pines within the Hualapai Mountains, at a 6,200 foot elevation.
Rising high above the surrounding desert, the Hualapai Range is in effect a
cool green island surrounded by a sea of cactus and desert shrubs. This
recreation site becomes especially attractive during the summer months, with
temperatures here averaging 20 degrees cooler than the nearby desert valleys
located over 3,000 feet below. Wild Cow Springs Recreation Site appeals to
visitors seeking a quiet, wooded refuge.

Muleshoe Ranch Cooperative Management Area

This 2.5 mile trail leads to the Wabayuma Peak summit. The first two miles of
Wabyuma Peak Trail follow an old jeep road into the Wabayuma Peak Wilderness.
At about the two-mile mark, you will find yourself in a saddle; a wire fence
will be on your left. Look for the narrow path heading up the slope. Near the
top of the ridge, the trail becomes faint, but blaze marks on large ponderosa
pine will guide you to the top. The trail ends in a saddle a half mile south
of the summit; proceed cross-country to reach the peak. The summit offers
spectacular views of the Black Mountains to the west, the Aquarius Mountains
to the east, and of the Hualapai Mountains to the north and south.  
  
Wabayuma Peak Trail is rated moderate for hikers and difficult to extremely
difficult for equestrians. Weather conditions are most comfortable in late
spring through fall.
