A common route leads to Pecos Baldy Lake, where overnight camping is allowed, with campfires permitted 200 feet from the water.

Recreation staff or a campground host regularly patrols the area and is available to answer any questions campers may have. 
For added security, groups can lock the gate after settling into the site if they choose. One of the sites, Group B, is accessible, ensuring convenience for all visitors. All roads leading to the campground are paved, making it accessible for low-clearance vehicles as well.

Nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Jack's Creek Group Campground is located on the edge of the Pecos Wilderness, which encompasses 160,000 acres of mountain landscapes, high-altitude lakes, and the Pecos River. The campground is richly forested, featuring a mix of firs and aspens that showcase golden foliage in the fall.
Down the road from to the group campground, Jack's Creek enhances the area’s natural beauty, creating a serene atmosphere ideal for relaxation and great trout fishing. The region teems with diverse wildlife, including elk, mule deer, and migratory birds. In winter, bald eagles and other raptors can be spotted, making Jack's Creek a great destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

There are many hiking and fishing areas along the Pecos River, offering great opportunities for anglers and hikers alike. Just 50 minutes away, Pecos National Historical Park features prehistoric archaeological ruins, 19th-century ranches, and a Civil War battlefield, providing a rich glimpse into the area’s history. 
The town of Pecos is located about 21 miles south of the campground. The City of Santa Fe is just over an hour drive away.

There are 10 units, picnic tables and grills,  and  vaulted toilets in the
parking lot.  There is no potable water and no campground host.  The entire
area is very scenic, and NM 475 is designated as the Santa Fe Scenic Byway.
Because of the large stands of aspen, the area is very busy, especially in the
fall aspen viewing season. both above and below Big Tesuque Campground,
including hiking, biking, and picnic areas. Winter activities include both
nordic and alpine skiing. Tesuque is pronounced "tes-sue-kay"

for an overnight stay before embarking on a backpack into the Pecos. There is
ample space for trailer/RV camping, but no dump station is available. There is
no potable water and no Campground Host. The entire area is very scenic, and
NM 475 is also designated as the Santa Fe Scenic Byway. Because of the scenic
quality and the easy access from Santa Fe, the area is very busy, especially
in the summer and in the fall aspen viewing season.

**Important Note: The campground is OPEN to the public but visitors may
encounter a closed gate on Forest Road 223 before the campground. This gate is
for livestock management. Please feel free to enter through the gate but close
it again once you pass through. Thank you for your cooperation.**

Located above 9,000 feet, Iron Gate Campground is an excellent spot to access
the Pecos Wilderness for day hiking and horseback riding.** ** This campground
features 14 indivdual units, vaulted toilets, trash bin, tables, fire
pit/grill, 4 horse corrals. Maximum recommended length for vehicle _and_ horse
trailer is 30 feet. **Forest Road 223 which provides access to this Campground
is rough and is not recommended for low clearance vehicles.  **

Important Note: The campground is OPEN to the public but visitors may encounter a closed gate on Forest Road 223 before the campground. This gate is for livestock management. At 8475 feet in elevation, Black Canyon Campground is in a great location to
experience some of the finest mountain scenery the Southwest has to offer. The
facility is newly renovated and provides access to a variety of outdoor
recreational activities. Campers can enjoy warm days and cool weather in the
summer months, providing a scenic getaway from the desert heat.

Hikers enjoy a pleasant hiking 1.5-mile trail that loops around the campground
and into the surrounding forest. Several additional hiking, mountain biking
and horseback riding trails are located nearby.  
  
The Pecos Wilderness can be accessed eight miles from the campground, with
many trails leading to majestic peaks and through valleys, canyons and
forested groves.  
  
Many recreation opportunities exist along Highway 475, both above and below
Black Canyon Campground, including hiking and biking trails and picnic areas.
In the winter, the area offers both Nordic and alpine skiing.

The campground offers many single and double-family sites, most of which are
accessible. Some sites are designated as walk-to sites for tent camping only.

**PROHIBITIONS**  
Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a) and (b), the following
are prohibited on the  
National Forest System (NFS) lands, roads, and trails in the Pecos/Las Vegas
Ranger District, Santa  
Fe National Forest, described below and shown on the attached map incorporated
into this Order  
as Exhibit A (the “Described Areas/Roads/Trails”):

  1. Going into or being upon the Described Areas which are closed for the protection of public   
health and safety. 36 C.F.R. § 261.53(e).

  2. Using a vehicle on the Described Roads. 36 C.F.R. § 261.54(a).
  3. Being on the Described Trails. 36 C.F.R. § 261.55(a).

**EXEMPTIONS**  
Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this
Order:

  1. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas   
Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this
Order or a written  
determination by a Forest Service authorized officer that a permit is not
required under 36 C.F.R.  
§ 251.50(e)(1) or (2).

  2. Any Federal, State, or Local Officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting resource   
in the performance of an official duty.

  3. Landowners crossing NFS lands in order to access their private property.

**DESCRIBED AREAS/ROADS/TRAILS**

  * The Barillas Lookout area specifically, all NFS lands within the boundary starting at the   
western junction of National Forest System Road (FR) 83 and FR 83Y, then
following FR 83 in a  
northeasterly direction to its junction with FR 83Y, then following FR 83Y in
a westerly direction  
to its junction with FR 83, the place of beginning.

  * FR 83 starting at its western junction with FR 83Y, then traveling west until its eastern   
junction with FR 83Y.

  * FR 263 in its entirety, starting at the National Forest Boundary, then traveling approximately 9   
miles until its terminus at the Burro Basin Recreation Site (Trailhead).

  * FR 263B, in its entirety, starting at its junction with FR 263, then traveling in a   
northwesterly direction until it terminates at the boundary with the private
land inholding near  
Harvey Ranch. This includes all non-contiguous sections of FR 263B.

  * FR 263C in its entirety, starting at its junction with FR 263 the National Forest  
Boundary, coordinates 105°29'37"W 35°43'3"N, then traveling in a southwesterly
direction until it terminates at the private land inholding at Calf Canyon.

  * NFS Trail 251, the Skyline Trail, starting at its junction with FR 83 (coordinates 105°28'51"W   
35°34'23"N), then traveling in a northerly direction for approximately 13
miles to its junction  
with FR 645.

  * All NFS lands within the developed recreation sites along FR 261 and FR 263 including: El   
Porvenir Developed Recreation Site (Campground), 35.42’42” N, - 105.24’41” W,
EV Long Developed Recreation Site (Campground), 35.41’53.73 N, - 105.25’24”W,
Baker Flat Developed Recreation Site  
(Picnic Site), 35.42’23” N, 105.26’25”W, Oak Flats Developed Recreation Site
(Picnic Site)  
35.42’12” N, 105.26’3”W, Big Pine Developed Rec Site (Picnic Site) 35.42’46”N,
105.27’51”W, and  
Burro Basin Developed Recreation Site (Trailhead) 35.43’27”N, 105.30’31”W.  

**PURPOSE**  
The purpose of this Order is to protect public health and safety from Hermits
Peak and Calf Canyon  
post-fire conditions.  
  
**IMPLEMENTATION**  

  1. This Order shall be in effect from May 4, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. through December 31, 2027, at 12:00   
a.m., unless rescinded.

  2. A map identifying the Described Areas/Roads/Trails, is attached and made part of this Order as   
Exhibit A. For a digital version of this Order and Exhibit A, go to

  3. Unless otherwise expressly defined in this Order, the terms used in this Order are defined by   
the regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture, 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts
200-299. If there are  
terms in this Order that are not expressly defined in the Order or 36 C.F.R.
Chapter II, Parts  
200-299, their meaning shall be determined by their plain language
definitions.

  4. A violation of the above prohibitions is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor by a fine of not   
more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, or by
imprisonment for not more  
than six months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551; 18 U.S.C.  
§§ 3559, 3571, and 3581.

U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service Santa Fe National Forest Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District TEMPORARY AREA, ROAD, AND TRAIL CLOSURES FOR HERMITS PEAK AND CALF CANYON POST-FIRE IMPACTS PROHIBITIONS Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a) and (b), the following are prohibited on the  National Forest System (NFS) lands, roads, and trails in the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District, Santa  Fe National Forest, described below and shown on the attached  map  incorporated  into  this  Order  as  Exhibit  A  (the  “Described Areas/Roads/Trails”):<ol><li>Going into or being upon the Described Areas which are closed for the protection of public  health and safety. 36 C.F.R. § 261.53(e).</li><li>Using a vehicle on the Described Roads. 36 C.F.R. § 261.54(a).</li><li>Being on the Described Trails. 36 C.F.R. § 261.55(a).</li></ol>EXEMPTIONS Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:<ol><li>Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas  Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order or a written  determination by a Forest Service authorized officer that a permit is not required under 36 C.F.R.  § 251.50(e)(1) or (2).</li><li>Any Federal, State, or Local Officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting resource  in the performance of an official duty. </li><li>Landowners crossing NFS lands in order to access their private property.</li></ol>DESCRIBED AREAS/ROADS/TRAILS<ul><li>The Barillas Lookout area specifically, all NFS lands within the boundary starting at the  western junction of National Forest System Road (FR) 83 and FR 83Y, then following FR 83 in a  northeasterly direction to its junction with FR 83Y, then following FR 83Y in a westerly direction  to its junction with FR 83, the place of beginning.</li><li>FR 83 starting at its western junction with FR 83Y, then traveling west until its eastern  junction with FR 83Y.</li><li>FR 263 in its entirety, starting at the National Forest Boundary, then traveling approximately 9  miles until its terminus at the Burro Basin Recreation Site (Trailhead).</li><li>FR 263B, in its entirety, starting at its junction with FR 263, then traveling in a  northwesterly direction until it terminates at the boundary with the private land inholding near  Harvey Ranch. This includes all non-contiguous sections of FR 263B.</li><li>FR 263C in its entirety, starting at its junction with FR 263 the National Forest Boundary, coordinates 105°29'37"W 35°43'3"N, then traveling in a southwesterly direction until it terminates at the private land inholding at Calf Canyon.</li><li>NFS Trail 251, the Skyline Trail, starting at its junction with FR 83 (coordinates 105°28'51"W  35°34'23"N), then traveling in a northerly direction for approximately 13 miles to its junction  with FR 645.</li><li>All NFS lands within the developed recreation sites along FR 261 and FR 263 including: El  Porvenir Developed Recreation Site (Campground), 35.42’42” N, - 105.24’41” W, EV Long Developed Recreation Site (Campground), 35.41’53.73 N, - 105.25’24”W, Baker Flat Developed Recreation Site  (Picnic Site), 35.42’23” N, 105.26’25”W, Oak Flats Developed Recreation Site (Picnic Site)  35.42’12” N, 105.26’3”W, Big Pine Developed Rec Site (Picnic Site) 35.42’46”N, 105.27’51”W, and  Burro Basin Developed Recreation Site (Trailhead) 35.43’27”N, 105.30’31”W.  </li></ul>PURPOSE The purpose of this Order is to protect public health and safety from Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon  post-fire conditions. IMPLEMENTATION  <ol><li>This Order shall be in effect from May 4, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. through December 31, 2027, at 12:00  a.m., unless rescinded.</li><li>A map identifying the Described Areas/Roads/Trails, is attached and made part of this Order as  Exhibit A. Chapter II, Parts 200-299. If there are  terms in this Order that are not expressly defined in the Order or 36 C.F.R.
