The Upper South Fork Trail head begins at the dispersal camping site approx. 1
1/2 miles above the Lower South Fork Trailhead. There is a trail that follows
the east side of the Conejos River and ends at the Lower South Fork Trailhead.

hiking, and backpacking.

## Overview

Elk Creek Campground is located in Conejos County, approximately 23 miles west
of Antonito, Colorado. Located in the lower portion of the Conejos Canyon a
short distance from Highway 17, it is an easily reached destination for
visitors to the area. Elk Creek runs alongside the campground. The elevation
of the campground is 8,500 ft.

## Recreation

Consider a day trip to the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad (steam) which
offers a 64-mile journey through abandoned mining towns. One access to the
train is in Antonito, CO, about 23 miles from the campground.  
  
Fishing, hunting, hiking, scenic driving and wildlife watching are some of the
popular activities in the area. Elk Creek and Duck Lake trailheads are a short
distance away, both of which are access points to the South San Juan
Wilderness Area.

The Archuleta trail is composed of 2 segments.  Trail 741 is 4.3 miles long.
It begins at Forest Road 121 and ends at Forest Trail 740.1. Trail 740.1 is
6.99 miles long.  It begins at Trail 740 and ends at the Forest Boundary with
the Tierra Amarilla Grant.

The trails are open for the following uses: Off Highway Vehicles (OHV) less
than or equal to 50 inches wide, motorcycles, snow mobiles, mountain bikes,

Elwood Cabin sits in a saddle along the San Juan Mountains  
  
overlooking an open meadow, offering guests a unique lodging

The cabin was built in 1911 by the Mountain States Telephone Company as a
"line  
  
shack" to support crews maintaining the transcontinental telephone line.
Remnants of this  
  
old telephone line are still found along Iron Creek to the southeast. The
cabin was also used  
  
as a Forest Service Station from 1950 until 1962, serving as living quarters
for Forest Service  
  
employees who worked on numerous projects in the area.  
  
  
  
Although the phone line has been abandoned, today the cabin is a high-altitude

In winter, the Elwood cabin area can be blanketed with as much as ten feet of
snow, requiring preparation and knowledge of winter travel. Snowmobiling,
skiing and snowshoeing are popular activities in the area.

## Facilities

The one room log cabin is furnished with two bunk beds with single beds on the
top and on the bottom of each bunk, accommodating up to four individuals total
for the cabin. The cabin has a wood stove for heat, propane lighting and a
propane stove. The kitchen is equipped with a table and chairs, cooking
utensils, pots and pans and a fire extinguisher. Firewood is available in the
adjoining shed. An outdoor vault toilet is also on-site.

Guests must provide a sufficient supply of water for cooking, cleaning and
washing. Guests are also encouraged to bring an additional light source in
case of emergencies.

Although the cabin has some amenities, guests do need to provide their own
food, sleeping bags, linens, towels, dish soap, matches, first aid kit,
avalanche equipment, toilet paper and garbage bags.

High in the San Juan Mountains at an elevation of 11,000 feet, this cabin
provides guests with views of nearby peaks, meadows filled with wildflowers

The South Fork of Rock Creek provides fishing. Hiking trails include: Alamosa River to Rock Creek Trail 703, North Fork Rock Creek Trail 704 and South Fork Rock Creek Trail 702. Motorcycles are allowed on Trails 702 and 703. ATV's less than 50 inches wide are allowed on Trail 702 and it connects over to Blowout Pass. The campground facilities include 7 sites with tables and fireplaces, a vault type toilet and ample parking space for trailhead parking. There is no water or refuse receptacles. Comstock Campground

The West Fork Rio Chama trail is 1 1/4 miles long. It begins at Forest Trail
738 and ends at the junction with Trail 741.  Trail 741 was formerly numbered
as Trail 740 from this junction on.

The West ChamaTrail provides access to upper Chama Basin, an area of virgin
spruce-fir forests surrounding steep and coloful volcanic cliffs. Waterfalls
tumbling over the cliffs can be seen from almost any vantage point. The fall
is an especially good time to visit  Chama Basin, when the slopes of aspen are
in full splendor.

The West Chama Trail climbs steeply away from the Chama River along a small
tributary stream within an aspen forest. As the trail leaves this tributary
and follows the Chama River to the confluence of the East and West Forks, it
stays high above the river and passes through dry subalpine meadows and
scattered aspen stands. A spectacular view of the entire valley is afforded
from the trail above the confluence. Banded Peak, a local landmark, rises
massively on the left as one climbs up the trail. The strenuous climb up the
cliff to the Forest Boundary rewards the hikers with a view of Chama Basin and
south into New Mexico that is unsurpassable.

The trail is open for the following uses: Horseback riding, mountain biking,
hiking, and backpacking.

CABINS.**

Visitors may reserve the cabin for a maximum of 14 days to allow others the
opportunity to rent the cabin. The combination to the cabin is provided in the
confirmation letter.

The surrounding area offers many recreation opportunities, including hunting,
hiking, off-highway vehicle riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, backcountry
skiing, horseback riding and fishing.
