The Flathead National Forest has three forecast zones for avalanches: the Whitefish Range, the Flathead Range and Glacier National Park, and the Swan Range. Avalanche hazards are highly spatially variable, so check the forecast for the area you are going!
Flathead Avalanche is a partnership between the Flathead National Forest Avalanche Center (FAC) and the Friends of the Flathead Avalanche Center (FOFAC). They provide daily avalanche forecasting, education, and outreach in northwest Montana.
Avalanche Awareness
Many avalanche victims don’t know they are in avalanche danger and are unprepared to deal with an avalanche. This doesn't have to happen – the danger signs are usually obvious to those who know what to look for. It’s important for those living, working, and recreating in snowy mountains to learn about avalanches. What you learn can save lives.
