required for every 15 people.

Treasure Park – Group Use Areas

Shannon Campground is small and tucked away along the upper reaches of
Marijilda Creek, a pleasant little brook that winds through a setting of tall
trees and green grass. Campsites are shaded under mature Engelmann spruce and
Douglas-fir. Two three-sided wood shelters of the type originally developed in
the Adirondack Mountains of New York add to the historic atmosphere of this
campground.

The Arcadia Trail, which leads down the mountain to Arcadia Campground, has
been designated a National Recreation Trail. A one-mile spur leads from this
trail to the top of Heliograph Peak, a vantage point with a history as well as
a view. This 10,022-foot vantage point once served as a location for signal
mirrors used to communicate messages during the Apache Wars of the late 1880s.
Today you'll find a Forest Service lookout tower on the mountaintop as well as
some of the most panoramic views in southeastern Arizona.

Shannon Campground

Located high in the Pinaleno Mountains in an open, grassy stand of aspen and
fir, this campground was constructed to provide a more primitive camping
experience than most forest campgrounds. Campsites include a parking area and
a fire grill. A public corral is available for riding and pack stock. Nearby
there are plenty of foot and equestrian trails.

The Grant Creek Trail starts at the campground edge and follows a scenic route
down canyon to the site of old Fort Grant, once an important outpost in the
days of warring between the Apaches and the U.S. Army. Today, the fort is an
Arizona State Prison Facility.

Also conveniently close by the campground is the Cunningham and Grant Hill
Loop, a system of old logging roads and trails developed for mountain biking
and hiking. Access to these trails is located across the Swift Trail (AZ 366)
from the campground.

<p>Located high in the Pinaleno Mountains in an open, grassy stand of aspen and fir, this campground was constructed to provide a more primitive camping experience than most forest campgrounds. Campsites include a parking area and a fire grill. A public corral is available for riding and pack stock. Nearby there are plenty of foot and equestrian trails.</p><p>The Grant Creek Trail starts at the campground edge and follows a scenic route down canyon to the site of old Fort Grant, once an important outpost in the days of warring between the Apaches and the U.S. Army. Today, the fort is an Arizona State Prison Facility.</p><p>Also conveniently close by the campground is the Cunningham and Grant Hill Loop, a system of old logging roads and trails developed for mountain biking and hiking. Access to these trails is located across the Swift Trail (AZ 366) from the campground.</p><p><strong>Note:&nbsp;</strong>Black bear area. Snow Flat Dispersed Camping Area is tucked away down from the Swift Trail
where there is a small pond at the bottom of the road. This area is a snow

Aravaipa Valley, and the Galiuro and Winchester mountains.

Soldier Creek is especially popular with campers during mid-summer because it
is one of the coolest areas on the mountain. You can access the upper
trailhead of Grant Goudy Ridge #310 from the south end of campground near the
host site.

ranges, and broad grasslands dotted with desert plants, a true southwestern
experience. The Pass is open year-round, though summer can bring soaring
temperatures and muddy rainstorms.

The area offers excellent hiking, and trails are easily accessed from the
campground. The Shake Trail #309 winds through the high desert landscape and
begins a climb that continues to the Swift Trail, high in the Pinaleño
Mountains.

The campground’s setting is also inviting for an afternoon picnic, with tables
set in a desert grassland with the occasional oak, manzanita tree, or cactus.

## Facilities

Stockton Pass has one group camping area that can be reserved by a single
group of up to 30 people at a time. Amenities include vault toilets, several
picnic tables, pedestal grills and campfire rings with grills. Bear-proof
trash cans are provided to keep visitors and wildlife safe. Several first-
come, first-served individual sites are located nearby (must pay separately).
Dead-and-downed firewood may be collected in and around the campsite.

This site encompasses an area of beautiful desert grassland mixed with oak
woodlands. Many species of birds and wildlife live in the area, including
deer, black bear and mountain lions.

SR 266 West will take you out to the Galiuro Wilderness area, equipped with a
variety of additional trails, including the West Divide Trail #289/Powers
Garden Trail #96, which will bring you to the Power’s Family Cabin. The
Power’s family were pioneers that farmed, ranged and mined in the Rattlesnake
Canyon in the early 1900s until three members of the family were involved in a
gunfight with law officers on a gold claim they were working. Two of the
members escaped, at the time becoming the object of one of the longest
manhunts in Arizona’s history.

SR 266 East will bring you back to SR 191, where you could continue heading
north to reach the town of Safford (approximately a 1 hour drive from the
Stockton Pass campground). Safford is home to our Ranger Station, where you
can go to find information about trails, camping, hunting and fishing, and
other questions you may have about our district (open Monday-Friday,
8am-4:30pm).

The main attraction at Riggs Flat Campground (Map) is Riggs Flat Lake. Some
come to fish in it, some to boat on it, and some just to enjoy the reflective
beauty this small (11 acre) lake adds to such a scenic area. The dam was
financed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department in 1957 to provide trout
fishing for forest recreationists. Information about stocking Riggs Lake is

Riggs Flat Campground

## Overview

Riggs Flat Lake is located at the end of Swift Trail, a road that winds along
the top of the Pinaleno Mountains. It is a small picturesque lake, 11 acres in
size, set in alpine forest and meadow.

Its cold waters are stocked during the summer with rainbow, brown and brook
trout, and anglers report that the fishing is usually good. Best baits for the
rainbows are corn, cheese, garlic cheese, salmon eggs, and worms. The brown
and brook trout are taken on artificial lures and flies as well. Small boats
are permitted on the lake, but most people fish from the shoreline.

If the big ones aren’t biting, there is always plenty of scenery to enjoy. In
addition to the views of the lake and the surrounding forest, West Peak is
visible from the vicinity of the lake. So are Aravaipa Valley and the Galiuro
Mountains to the west if you don't mind taking a short hike to get to an
overlook.

Day use: A Coronado National Forest or Interagency (America the Beautiful)
pass must be displayed. Day use passes can be purchased at the site for $8.

For visitors who do not want to use facilities, there is a small fee-free
parking area outside of the campground.

A valid Arizona fishing license and trout stamp (available at outdoor stores
around the state) is required for all anglers 14 years of age and older. Six
trout is the daily limit and the possession limit. Using live bait fish is
prohibited. Fishing season is May to October, day and night. Boats are
permitted on the lake, but only single electric motors may be used.
