Located on the west side of the Chiricahuas at 6,200 ft. elevation, Sycamore
Campground straddles the banks of West Turkey Creek. Turkey Creek is a small
perennial stream that cascades into the campground down a series of small
waterfalls and through a rocky cleft decorated with wildflowers in spring and
summer.

Sycamore Campground

Rustler Park is a wildflower-carpeted meadow high in the Chiricahuas. Around
the turn of the century, rustlers concealed stolen stock there while altered
brands healed and pursuit cooled. Today, the meadow provides a cool mountain
respite from the deserts below. Rimmed with Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine,
the meadow is sprinkled with seasonal wildflowers.

Campsites at Rustler Park are scattered along access roads that have been
purposefully kept out of the meadow to avoid damaging fragile plants and
soils. Since the Horseshoe II fire in 2011, the campground has been rebuilt
and some campsites now have canopies to give visitors shade.

Rustler Park is an excellent place to pursue birdwatching. Larger animals,
including black bear, are frequently spotted here, too. Trails lead from the
campground into the Chiricahua Wilderness and to other places of interest.

Rustler Park Campground

The Herb Martyr trailhead, located near Herb Martyr campgound, is one of the
popular birdwatching and overall hiking areas in Cave Creek Canyon.

Though South Fork is known for its trogons, there are plenty of other
interesting and rare creatures to encounter here. Over 300 species of birds
have been sighted in the Chiricahua Mountains, including the magnificent
hummingbird, blue-throated hummingbird and Montezuma quail. Other interesting
types of wildlife frequently sighted here include Apache fox squirrels,
coatimundis and Coues white-tailed deer. The scenery is quite impressive in
this area, too.

Note: High clearance vehicles are strongly recommended. 4WD also beneficial,
if available.

Herb Martyr Campground

This campground is along Rucker Creek. The area is an excellent place to take
photographs, do a little birdwatching, or relax. It was formally known as Camp
Rucker Group Site.

Further up the canyon is Rucker Lake. Rucker Lake silted in after the
Rattlesnake Fire in 1992 and is now a dry lake bed slowly being reclaimed by
riparian vegetation.

<p>This campground is&nbsp;along Rucker Creek.&nbsp;The area is an excellent place to take photographs, do a little birdwatching, or&nbsp;relax. It was formally known as&nbsp;Camp Rucker Group Site.</p><p>Further up the canyon is Rucker Lake. forest campgrounds and a number of trails into the Chiricahua Wilderness.
History buffs might want to stop at the historic Rucker Military Camp and
Ranch, a remnant of the region's warring between U.S. Cavalry and Chiricahua
Apaches.

## Facilities

Camp Rucker has one spacious group campsite that includes eight picnic tables,
two large serving tables, campfire rings with grills, bear-proof trash
containers and vault toilets.  
  
The site was designed for groups. However, if the area has not been reserved
by a group, individuals are permitted to camp.

Located at an elevation of 5,533 feet, Camp Rucker is situated in a grassy
area with plenty of open space between the oak, juniper and Arizona walnut
trees that provide welcome shade on a summer day.  
  
A short distance from the camp, Rucker Creek runs intermittently throughout
the year. Monte Vista Peak to the northeast and a number of other minor peaks
and foothills provide a scenic backdrop.

## Nearby Attractions

Campers can take a day trip to Chiricahua National Monument. The monument
protects some of the most scenic areas of the Chiricahua Mountains, a
wonderland of rocks and forests with many opportunities for hiking and

Camp Rucker Group Site

Campsites are clustered around a grassy meadow in this relatively open
streamside camp. All sites are shaded, some more than others, and all are
reasonably close to Cave Creek. Birdwatching is good right in camp (as it is
in all Cave Creek camps) with elegant trogons and many other interesting
species sighted regularly among the sycamores and oaks that border the creek.

The open character of the area makes for exciting views of Cave Creek Canyon's
famous rock formations which tower over the area. Other recreation attractions
in Cave Creek Canyon, such as birding areas along South Fork and a number of
hiking trails, are just a short drive from this campground, which is along the
Cave Creek Canyon/Portal to Paradise Loop scenic drive.

Some attractions you may want to take advantage of while you're camped at
Sunny Flat are the scenic Vista Point Trail located a short distance
downstream of the campground, and the Cave Creek Visitor Information Center a
little farther downstream. The Center, is open year-round, offers interpretive
information, books and pamphlets on the natural and cultural history of the
area, and a few examples of local wildlife species.

Stewart Campground is a cool, shady streamside camp situated under the canopy
of Arizona cypress and sycamore trees.  The campground, and nearby Cave Creek
Nature Trail and South Fork Trail, offer excellent birding.

A spur trail across the road links to the Cave Creek Nature Trail. A short
distance up the canyon, the Cathedral Vista Trail leads to unobstructed views
of Cave Creek Canyon. Though this short, easy stroll has little elevation
change, the view it presents is impressive.

Sites at Stewart have pull-ins making it one of the better places along Cave
Creek for camping if you have an RV. Trailers up to 16 feet are permitted.

trailhead for the Cave Creek Nature Trail, which spans the lower Cave Creek
Canyon from Sunny Flat Campground to the Silver Peak Trailhead.

Sites at Idlewilde are best suited for camping in tents, vans, or pickup truck
campers. No trailers are permitted.

rock-climbing are also popular activities, and picnic areas dot the canyon for
its many hikers.

## Facilities

The Portal Bunkhouse is a two-room cabin, suitable for up to four people. It
has electricity, heater, and running water. The cabin has a bedroom with
bathroom including a shower, sink, and toilet; and a kitchen with a dining
area. The bedroom has a twin-over-double bunk bed and a single bed. A small
dinette with seating for four is located in the kitchen, which is equipped
with a stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, and coffee pot. Pots, pans,
utensils, and dishes are provided. Outside, guests will enjoy using the
propane grill and picnic table for outdoor dining.  
  
Although the cabin has amenities for comfortable lodging, guests will need to
provide some of their own supplies, including food, sleeping bags or linens,
pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, a first aid kit, toilet paper, and
garbage bags. It is recommended that guests bring additional drinking water,

Although the cabin has amenities for comfortable lodging, guests will need to provide some of their own supplies, including food, sleeping bags or linens, pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, a first aid kit, toilet paper, and garbage bags. It is recommended that guests bring additional drinking water and flashlight in case of emergencies. <h2>Natural Features</h2>
The Portal CCC House is located at the entrance to Cave Creek Canyon at an elevation of 5,000 feet. The canyon's soaring cliffs, with their caves and pinnacles, are often described as "Arizona's 'Secret' Grand Canyon." Cave Creek, a perennial stream, flows nearby.
