campground, and the Molino Trail leads to the Pusch Ridge Wilderness (hiking
and horseback riding only). A variety of additional trails, including some on
9,157' Mt. Lemmon, are available in the area for those who wish to venture
away from the campground for the day.

## Facilities

This facility has a few dozen individual campsites available on a first-come,
first-served basis, along with a reservable group camping and picnic area. The
group area is accessible with a paved walkway, and is equipped with a large
picnic shelter covering several picnic tables, two serving tables, grills and
food storage lockers for bear safety. Six cleared tent pads, as well as one
accessible tent site, are adjacent to the picnic area. Most of the tent sites
are open and sunny. RVs and trailers are permitted.  
  
Visitors must bring their own drinking water; none is provided.

Molino

This site is also known as Prison Camp.The site was a Federal Honor Camp
beginning in 1937 to house federal prisoners supplying labor to build a road
for access into the Santa Catalina Mountains. Prisoners had been convicted of
federal crimes ranging from immigration law violations to tax evasion to bank
robbery.

During World War II, many of the prisoners of this camp were conscientious
objectors whose religions prohibited them from serving in the military. Some
were Japanese Americans protesting the Japanese American Relocation, the
largest forced removal and incarceration in U.S. History that started after
the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. Over 100,000 Japanese
Americans, many American Citizens, were imprisoned in internment camps for
fear they would conduct espionage and sabotage along the west coast.

Gordon Hirabayashi was a senior at the University of Washington in 1942. He
challenged the constitutionality of internment based on race or ancestry. He
turned himself in to the FBI rather than report for relocation. He was
convicted and sentenced to serve at the Federal Honor Camp in the Santa
Catalina Mountains.

In 1987, Hirabayashi's case was overturned. A federal commission determined
that the internment had been motivated by racial prejudice and wartime
hysteria. In 1988, the Civil Liberties Act was signed by President Ronald
Reagan, which acknowledged the injustice and apologized for the internment.

In 1999, the Coronado National Forest renamed the site in honor of Dr.
Hirabayashi and the other resisters of conscience who were imprisoned there.
Dr. Hirabayashi and others attended the dedication ceremony.

in the campground. A hosts or employee will give each guest a campground map
(trail maps upon request), rules, and safety information.

During rainy seasons, Rose Creek meanders through the area to Rose Canyon Lake
at the lower end of the campground. This six-acre lake is sheltered by trees,
and offers a pleasant setting for a walk, relaxing, or fishing for stocked
trout. There are short hiking opportunities near the lake including a
handicapped-accessible path from the lower parking area to a floating dock
near the dam.

The Campground Store is located next to Lake parking lot and is open Thursday
- Sunday, 10am-5pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day. After Labor Day through
October, the Store is open Saturday and Sunday, 10-4pm. The store carries
fishing supplies including poles and licenses, camping supplies, and a sundry
of grocery items including ice cream and ice. If the store is closed, you can
still purchase ice and firewood through the camp host.

When the campground itself is closed for the season, around November-March,
the area is still open for woodland walks, wildlife watching, and fishing.
Please remember, however, that in the off-season the gates will be closed and
locked, so no garbage service is provided and no water is available. If you
visit then, be sure to pack out everything you pack in.

passes can be purchased for $65.00. Day use is $11.00. The Interagency Senior
and Access Pass is good for a 50% discount on camping fee only. Payable with

The Sollers Cabin is a two-story, six-room cabin suitable for up to eight
people. The cabin has 3 bedrooms, each with a queen-sized bed, a dining/living
room, 1.5 bathrooms, and a fully equipped kitchen. The living room contains
two queen-size futons. The dining room has a table which seats eight. The
newly added sunroom is great for morning coffee or a good book. The kitchen is
equipped with an electric stove and oven, microwave, refrigerator, pots, pans,
utensils, dishes, a toaster, and a coffee pot. The house has electricity,
electric heating (no A/C), and running water. While the cabin has amenities
for comfortable lodging, guests **do need to provide** some of their own
supplies, including food, sleeping bags, linens, pillows, towels, dish soap,
matches, a first aid kit, toilet paper, and garbage bags. At this time, guests
are not to use the fireplace in the cabin. Unless fire restrictions are in
effect, guests can have a fire in the fire ring outside. Although electricity
is available, it is recommended that guests bring an additional light source
in case of emergencies.

excellent access to a myriad of recreational opportunities, including hiking,
camping, birding, horseback riding, picnicking, sightseeing, mountain biking,

## Overview

the campgrounds edge make Showers Point Group Site a popular place for groups
to spend a weekend or an afternoon. Visitors can relax in shaded campsites,
picnic at nearby Rose Canyon, hike and mountain bike on nearby trails or take
a scenic drive on Catalina Highway.

## Recreation

Within easy walking distance from Showers Point is one of the most scenic
overlooks in the Santa Catalinas. From this towering bluff visitors can see
the lower slopes of the Santa Catalina Range and the Santa Cruz Valley
stretching toward Mexico. Tall, pyramid-shaped Mt. Wrightson of the Santa Rita
Mountains stands prominent on the horizon.  
  
Visitors enjoy hiking through the Santa Catalina backcountry, via the Palisade
Trail that departs near the campground. The trail drops down the southwestern
slopes of the mountain range to the popular Sabino Canyon Recreation Area.  
  
Fishing is also available at the nearby six-acre Rose Canyon Lake. A day-use
fee is applicable at Rose Canyon

## Overview

The Palisades Ranger Residence Cabin is located within the Palisades
Administrative Site in the Santa Catalina Mountains, 20 miles northeast of
Tucson, Arizona. The cabin is reached via the East Catalina Highway, which
becomes the General Hitchcock Highway, a historic and scenic drive that takes
visitors through multiple biozones from the Sonoran Desert to the dense
forests at 8,000 feet elevation. The cabin has indoor plumbing, electricity, a
full kitchen, furniture, beds and an enclosed front yard.

The cabin is available from late March to early November depending on the
weather.

## Recreation

The Palisades Ranger Residence Cabin is approximately one hour from Tucson,
AZ, 18.4 miles up Mt. Lemmon. The cabin location provides access to a myriad
of recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, birding, horseback
riding, picnicking, sightseeing, mountain biking, rock climbing, and visiting
historic areas. Fishing is also available at nearby Rose Canyon Lake. Winter
sports are available at higher elevations, depending on snowfall; Mt. Lemmon

## Facilities

The Palisades Ranger Residence is a five-room cabin, suitable for up to four
people. The cabin has a bedroom, dining room, living room, bathroom, and fully
equipped kitchen. The bedroom has a queen bed, while the living room contains
2 full-size futons. The dining room has a table and four chairs. The kitchen
is equipped with a propane stove/oven, microwave, refrigerator, pots, pans,
utensils, dishes, and a coffee pot. The house has electricity, a propane
heater, and running water.  
  
While the cabin has amenities for comfortable lodging, guests do need to
provide some of their own supplies, including food, sleeping bags, linens,
pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, a first aid kit, toilet paper, and
garbage bags. Although electricity is available, it is recommended that guests
bring an additional light source in case of emergencies.

Whitetail Group Site

This mountain campground is located at the head of a shallow, forested canyon
a short distance off the Catalina Highway. Spencer Canyon faces the city of
Tucson and the Santa Cruz Valley, both of which are visible as a distant
panorama through openings in the forest canopy.

Spencer Canyon Campground has 66 sites. Each site has a concrete table,
firepit, B-B-Q and bear box for food storage. A beautiful night view of Tucson
can be seen from several sites. Spencer is rugged, rustic in layout and close
to the hamlet of Summerhaven. Each camping area has clean, stocked vault
toilets. Campground hosts live on site. Firewood may be purchased from the
hosts.

The Catalina Highway is paved, but it can be snow covered in winter when
chains and/or 4-wheel drive may be required.

popular trails begin at the recreation area and offer access to the dramatic
landscape of the Santa Catalina Front Range, famous for its deep canyons and

silhouette of surrounding mountains.  
  
The self-guided Desert Nature Trail at the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center
provides an excellent way to get to know the plants that have adapted to
living in this demanding environment.  
  
Several area trails can also be used for mountain biking and horseback riding.

for enjoying an afternoon picnic or a weekend campout. This year-round
facility is a popular stop among off-road vehicle enthusiasts and families.
Hunting, hiking and scenic driving opportunities are nearby. It is located 8
miles from the town of Oracle.

can find access to the Arizona Trail, which runs from Mexico to Utah, about 5
miles from the campground along Forest Road 38. Off-road vehicle trails are
also available in the area.

autumn. The campground sits at an elevation of 4,700 feet alongside
Peppersauce Creek. The creek is normally dry except during heavy rains or the
area's summer monsoon season. Campers should be aware that the creek is prone
to flash flooding during rain events.
