under 22') Tables, toilets. Water available from stream; not recommended for
drinking. Camping/picnicking Fishing access for Rio Hondo Hiking Trails -
Trailheads for Columbine Hondo Wilderness Study Area are several miles north
east on Highway 230.

Tucked in an aspen grove just aside Taos Ski Valley's lower parking lot, this
four-site campground for tents makes for quick access to the Bull of the Woods
Trailhead right across Twining Road. The campground is unique for its
location: You trade solitude for walkable access to the resort village.
Nonetheless, many find the spot just perfect for their needs, whether it's
acclimating at 9,500 feet or enjoying the best of a ski village while camping
under the stars.

**Nearby Recreation**

  * **Trails** : The Wheeler Peak Trail starts at the Bull of the Woods Trailhead, just a couple hundred feet away. The trail leads to the eponymous peak, first connecting to the Long Canyon and Gold Hill trails in the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness in its first few miles. Closer to the peak, it connects to Lost Lake Trail, providing access to the other side of the ridge. Other nearby trails include the Williams Lake Trail, its trailhead about two road miles through the community of Taos Ski Valley, and the four popular canyon trails back down the mountain along Highway 150: Gavilan, Italianos, Manzanita Canyon and Yerba Canyon.
  * **Fishing** : The campground is located along the Rio Hondo, a popular river for fishing. Stream access is available upstream along the Wheeler Peak Trail or downstream along Highway 150 (please be cognizant of private property in some areas).
  * **Fall Color** : Taos Ski Valley is an excellent leaf peeping area due to numerous aspen groves found throughout the valley, on trails and along the Rio Hondo. Peak color usually to occurs between late September and early October.

Twining Campground

## Overview

Columbine Campground is located between Questa and Red River, New Mexico. The
Red River flows past the campground and a trailhead leads into the Columbine-
Hondo Wilderness area. Columbine Campground sits at 7,900 feet in elevation.

## Recreation

The Columbine Twining hiking trail can be found at the south end of the
campground and gives access to 14 miles of hiking trails, and leads into the
Columbin-Hondo Wilderness area. The Red River runs near the campground and can
be accessed near the first loop.

## Facilities

This campground offers 26 single sites, potable water, and vault toilets. Each
site is has a fire ring, picnic table, and tent pad. Please note that no water
can be filled directly into a trailer, rv, or motorhome anywhere in this
campground - the potable water is only for filling containers you bring back
to your site.

## Natural Features

The campground is composed of two loops. One small loop at the campground
entrance, has all open sites and views of the towering mountains. The other is
a long loop up the canyon along the fast-flowing Columbine Creek. The
campsites in this loop are tucked in among pine, spruce and some aspen
providing ample shade and good privacy between campsites.

Elephant Rock Campground has excellent fishing access to the well-stocked Red
River, nearby Eagle Rock Lake and hiking into the surrounding high country.
This campground is close to the highway with plenty of large pine trees. The
campground rests at 8,400 feet above sea level.

## Recreation

The nearest hiking trail, Fawn Lakes Trail, is located .3 miles east of
Elephant Rock Campground, near Fawn Lakes Campground. This trail meets
accessibility guidelines. Elephant Rock offers convenient access to State Rt.
38 and is well situated for day trips on the Enchanted Circle and to the town
of Red River. The Red River is across the road from the campground but is not
accessible.

campgrounds located along the scenic canyons of Red River. Visitors enjoy

campsites at 9,500 feet overlooks the 15-acre Cabresto Lake from a level ridge
at the head of a 4 mile trail to Heart Lake. One of the few places in New
