This campground is located in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area,19 miles
west of Redding, California, and three and a half hours north of Sacramento.
You can hear the waters of Brandy Creek from each campsite. Brandy Creek Trail
passes nearby the campground and leads to a lovely series of waterfalls.  
  
The cool, clear waters of Whiskeytown Lake provide endless water activities.
The picturesque mountain setting and extensive forested backcountry offer
ample opportunities for hiking and biking.

During the summer heat, swimming, kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding and water
skiing are popular on the 3,200 acre lake. Year round, hiking, mountain
biking, horseback riding, gold panning, fishing and picnicking attract
visitors. Hunting is allowed in the appropriate season.

## Facilities

Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, a large bear-resistant storage
locker, a metal fire pit with a swing-arm barbecue grill and a lamp pole. Each
campsite has its own vault toilet. Drinking water and electricity are not

Carr Powerhouse Picnic Area is located on the northern shore of Whiskeytown
Lake in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, 15 miles west of Redding,
California. This covered picnic area is a popular spot to celebrate birthdays,
weddings, family reunions, work events and many other special occasions. There
is a big open lawn area with additional picnic tables and benches.

This is a day use area only. The hours are 9 am to 9 pm for reservation
holders.

## Recreation

This area offers plenty of beuaitful views of Whiskeytown Lake. It is a big
open grass area with benches, picnic tables, cornhole cement boards, and BBQ
grills. Although swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing are popular
activities in the Whiskeytown Lake National Recreation Area in the summer,
this particular spot is not an area to do any of those due to strong water
currents generated from the Carr Powerhouse.

Swimming, kayaing, wading, etc, can be done in the water at nearby Oak Bottom
(2 miles east) and Whiskey Creek (4.5 miles east).

Hiking trails nearby include the Boulder Creek Falls and Oak Bottom Water
Ditch Trail. Both trails accessible by driving a short distance to the
trailheads. Crystal Creek Road is less than 1 mile away which leads to hikes
such as Crystal Creek and Whiskeytown Falls.

The Carr Powerhouse Picnic Area contains one large covered pavilion area with
seven concrete round tables, two large charcoal barbecue grills (each have 3
sections to grill on), electricity is available to the site, cement boards for

This picnic shelter costs $50 per day to reserve. **Entrance fees are required
in addition for each vehicle. If you already have a valid Interagency Annual,
Senior, Access, Military, or Whiskeytown Annual pass, please display this pass
in a hangtag or place it on the dashboard of your vehicle. Annual passes from
Crater Lake National Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park and Lava Beds
National Monument are also valid here at Whiskeytown. Entrance passes can be
purchased at the Whiskeytown Visitor Center or online at
https://www.recreation.gov/sitepass/74295.**

This campground is located in the southeast corner of Whiskeytown National

accommodate camping with horses, but horseback riders must share the
campground with visitors who may not have horses.

Horse Camp can accommodate any vehicle or combination of vehicles, including
trailers, RVs and RVs pulling other vehicles. Overflow parking is available.
Each campsite is equipped with two picnic tables, two large bear-resistant
storage lockers, a metal fire pit with a swing-arm barbecue grill and a lamp
pole. The two campsites share a vault toilet. A hand pump provides potable
water when available. There is no electricity at the site.  
  
There are no corrals, hitching posts or troughs at the site. Horses must be
high-lined or tethered to trailer.

A hand pump provides potable water when available.  There is no electricity at the site.  <br/><br/>

Whiskey Creek Group Picnic Area is located on the northern shore of
Whiskeytown Lake in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, 13 miles west of
Redding, California. The Group Picnic Area is a popular spot to celebrate
birthdays, family reunions, work events and many other special occasions with
a day of waterside fun. This is a day use area only. The hours are 9 am to 9
pm for reservation holders. Alcohol, smoking, and pets are prohibited.

## Recreation

During the summer heat, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing are
popular activities in the Whiskey Creek arm of the lake. Boats may be launched
at nearby Whiskey Creek Launch Ramp and moored along the shore of the Group
Picnic Area.

## Facilities

The Group Picnic Area contains one large site and two small sites with dirt
surfaces, each with two large serving tables, numerous picnic tables and a
large charcoal barbecue grill. We recommend that you bring your own portable
shade structures as there are no permanent ones at the site. These sites do

The Sacramento River Rail Trail is a historic and scenic non-motorized paved
path running 11 miles north-south along the western shore of the Keswick
Reservoir from just below Shasta Dam to Keswick Dam Road. Access is available
from five BLM-managed trailheads including Coram Road, Matheson, Keswick Boat
Launch, Rock Creek, and Keswick Dam trailheads. Hundreds of miles of trail
connect to the Sacramento River Rail Trail, including the motorized off
highway vehicle trails of Chappie-Shasta at the northern terminus of the
trail.

There are two lanes for travel in either direction and sweeping views of the
Keswick Reservoir and surrounding landscape. River access is available at
multiple sites including a paved boat launch at Keswick Boat Launch and
several undeveloped areas where kayaks or other smaller craft can be launched.
Shoreline fishing is also accessible at several locations, notably along the
Fishermen's Trail, accessible from the Keswick Dam Trailhead.

Traveling south from Keswick Dam Trailhead, users can continue along a sister
trail managed by the City of Redding, the Sacramento River Trail, to a variety
of other trails and ultimately arrive at the Sundial Bridge. A paved trail
outing could extend from Sundial Bridge to Shasta Dam and back, a 38-mile
adventure. The most adventurous users could ride a combination of paved and
dirt trails from the Sundial Bridge to Shasta Dam and back, a loop of over 40
miles along the western and eastern shores of the Sacramento River and Keswick
Reservoir, and across the top of Shasta Dam.

trails’ 2024 inclusion in Rails to Trails Conservancy’s Hall of Fame.

The trails are loaded with natural and cultural history. Between Keswick Dam
Trailhead to Matheson Trailhead, users will find a series of plaques
identifying trees and shrubs common throughout the region. The Upper Sac Ditch
Trail has several historic signs about mining and railroad development. Middle
Creek Trail, a few miles south of Keswick Dam Road, has information about the
Ruggles brothers who robbed a stagecoach there in 1892.

Middle Creek Trail is also a paved, 2 lane route, that travels up and away
from the Sacramento River to the terminus of the town of Shasta.

called the “Old Diggings Railroad,” the “Quartz Hill Railroad,” or the
“Mammoth Mine Railroad." The rail line was used in the early 1900s to haul
quartz used as flux for nearby copper smelting at Kennett (now under Shasta
Lake).

The Upper Sacramento and Lower Sacramento Ditch trails follow the alignment of
the historic Sacramento water ditch. The F.B. trail winds through some steep
terrain and offers amazing views of Keswick Reservoir. The Chamise Peak trail
climbs to the top of Chamise Peak where one is rewarded with an amazing 360

### Overview

Visitors to the rolling, brushy hills near Shasta Lake in northern California
will find off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding challenges for all abilities. More
than 250 miles of roads and trails are open to motorcyclists, all-terrain
vehicle drivers and four-wheelers. The area is near massive Shasta Dam and
Shasta Lake, and there are overlooks of the Sacramento River below the dam.
Wildlife species in the area include osprey, bald eagle, mule deer, and bear.
This area was named after former U. S. Congressman, Eugene Chappie. The area
is partially by the California State Parks OHV program.

Chappie-Shasta OHV Area provides 200+ miles of trails for motorcycles, UTVs,
ATVs, Jeeps, and more! There are trails for all skill levels - from front
country loops to longer, more remote adventures. This area is primarily used
by OHVers - but access to the Sacramento River Rail Trail (non-motorized) and
Shasta Lake are great too.

## Facilities

Two group campsites are available. Each has a vault toilet, potable water,
picnic tables, trash can, and campfire ring. The sites are large gravel lots,
great for RVs, trailers, etc. The two campsites can function seperately, but
the sites are immediately adjacent to each other. If both are reserved for

Shasta Dam and reservoir are features of the Central Valley Project -
Shasta/Trinity Divisions. Recreation at the reservoir is managed by the U.S.
Forest Service under agreement with the Bureau of Reclamation, Northern
California Area Office. Created by a dam across the Sacramento River, Shasta
Reservoir is the largest reservoir in California with 370 miles of shoreline.
Located 12 miles north of Redding, the reservoir provides excellent year-round
bank or boat fishing. Reservoir holds 16 varieties of fish, including
sturgeon. Trout species include rainbow, German brown, kamaloops, and kokanee
salmon. Bass species include largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. Catfish
species include channel cats, white cats, and brown bullheads. Smaller species
include crappie and bluegill. During the early spring bank anglers can catch
trout. During the summer the trout seek cooler temperatures with the most
effective trolling at depths of 30 to 70 feet. Almost any rocky area on the
lake may produce bass. Best catfish taking is in the spring and summer months
at night. Although there are white sturgeon in the lake, few anglers fish for
these giant bottom-feeders. Record sturgeon catch was in 1977, 190 pounds and
8 feet, 2 inches long. Reclamation is offering free public tours of Shasta
Dam. Tours are offered daily at 9 and 11 a.m. and at 1 and 3 p.m. Guests
should park at the Visitor Center and are asked to leave all belongings in
their vehicles. No purses, cameras or bags of any kind or cell phones will be
allowed on the tour. Guided tours will start at the second elevator tower on
the dam and will require the visitor to pass through a metal detector. The
tour, which takes about 45 minutes, will take visitors down in the elevator,
out to the spillway area, and will include a view inside the power plant.
Since Reclamation's priorities are to provide for the safety of visitors,
employees, and our facilities, considerable security modifications and
precautions have been put in place, while still offering the public an
opportunity to tour the dam. The Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday
8:00 to 4:30 and on the weekends from 8:00 to 5:00.

over 20 inches. Effective flies either cast from a drift boat or trolled
slowly. Productive slow trolling. Shore fishing produces both varieties of

Popular with anglers and pleasure boaters alike, the 43 miles of the Wild and
Scenic Trinity River from Lewiston to Pigeon Point is a class I and II segment
that flows out of the Trinity and Lewiston Lakes. This clear, cold section of
the river is world famous for its fly fishing. Paddlers enjoy the narrow
valley with Ponderosa Pine, Douglas fir, Oaks, and Madrone trees coating the
walls of the canyons. If you would like more adrenaline rush, the waters below
Pigeon Point rage at class III-V. Those interested in a more relaxing
experience can enjoy the abundant camping options in the area or head for the
trail with your friends, horses, or dog. If you would like to stay at the
river's edge, you can always swim, fish or do a little gold panning. The river
can be accessed from many locations along this stretch of the Trinity River.

## Commercial Guide Permit Information

Several commercial guides operate on the Trinity River under BLM and Forest
Service Special Recreation Permits offering guided drift boat fishing trips.
The BLM, in agreement with the Forest Service, manages up to 100 commercial
fishing guide permits on the Trinity River from Lewiston downstream to Burnt
Ranch. Each year from July 1st to September 1st BLM-Redding accepts permit
applications if open spots are available (usually due to non-renewal or
cancellation of a permit). Permits are awarded based on the number of open
spots available and approval of applications. Applying for a permit does not
guarantee that you will receive a permit. If there are more applicants than
available permits, permits will be awarded in the order they were received. If
you do not receive a permit because there weren't any open spots, you are
required to reapply the following year during the open application period.
