The Ruby-Horsethief section begins in Loma, CO and consists of a 25-mile
stretch of mostly flat-water with sections of Class I and II rapids. It flows
through beautiful red rock canyons and has many day hiking opportunities
offering both solitude and exploration.

The Westwater Canyon section offers boating excitement for experienced
adventurers to test their skills navigating eleven named rapids ranging in
difficulty from class I to class IV. The section contains incredible geology
and day hiking opportunities with glimpses of abandoned settler cabins and
caves. Approximately 10,000 people float this section of the Colorado River
each year. The 17 mile stretch is surrounded by the Westwater Wilderness Study
Area.

North of the campground are many motorized and non-motorized trails. These
trails include Kokopelli’s Trail , one of Colorado's and Utah's premiere
mountain bike trails. It stretches 140 miles from Loma, CO to Moab, UT with
elevations that rise to 8,400 feet following four-wheel-drive roads and
single-track trails.

## Facilities

Each campsite has parking for two vehicles (vehicle pulling a trailer = two
vehicles), a picnic table, a fire ring, and close proximity to a vault toilet
and trash receptacles.

Drinking water may be available March - November. However, do not rely on this
as the water source for your trips needs as it is not always operational.

There are no electric hook-ups and cell service is spotty to non-existent.

During business hours, the Westwater Ranger Station can assist visitors with
acquiring a campsite, trip planning, and campground etiquette.

The Westwater Campground is adjacent to the Colorado River as it meanders
through a valley. Views of Navajo Sandstone walls surrounding the valley can
be seen from the site.

The town of Moab, UT, Canyonlands National Park, and Arches National Park are
located approximately 70 miles to the southwest. The cities of Grand Junction
and Fruita, CO along with McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area and
Colorado National Monument are located approximately 35 miles to the east.

you did not use. If you depart after the facility check-out time (Noon), you
will not be eligible for a refund for that night.

**No-Shows**

A No Show occurs if you do not arrive at your campsite or cancel your
reservation by check-out time (Noon) on the day after the scheduled arrival
date. Staff will hold a campsite until check-out time (Noon) on the day
following the arrival date.

No-shows are assessed a $20.00 Recreation.gov service fee and forfeit the
first night’s use fee.

Westwater Canyon River

Westwater Canyon is one of the premier whitewater river trips in the west.
Trips range from one to two days and beautiful designated campsites are
available in the canyon. Depending on water level, Westwater ranges from being
fun and splashy to fast and powerful. Excellent river skills are a must at
every water level. A permit is required for all private and commercial groups.

There are eleven named rapids within Westwater Canyon that range in difficulty
up to Class IV. The first two are Wild Horse and Little Dolores (a.k.a. Little
D). A great play spot for kayakers forms in the second part of Little D in low
to medium water levels. The most significant rapids lie within a two-mile
stretch of the inner canyon, formed by pre-Cambrian metamorphic rock. Rapids
here include (in order): Marble Canyon, Staircase, Big Hummer, Funnel Falls,
Surprise, Skull, Bowling Alley, Sock-It-To-Me, and Last Chance. The most
challenging rapids are Funnel Falls (especially at high water), Skull, and
Sock-It-To-Me. The BLM River Rangers can provide you with specific information

A Westwater permit for private groups costs $10 per person with a limit of 25
people per permit. All groups must read and strictly adhere to the

permits are available at the Westwater Ranger Station.

Attention: Starting January 2020, Westwater Canyon River permits will be available on recreation.gov.

Westwater Canyon is one of the premier whitewater river trips in the west. Trips range from one to two days and beautiful designated campsites are available in the canyon. Depending on water level, Westwater ranges from being fun and splashy to fast and powerful. Excellent river skills are a must at every water level. A permit is required for all private and commercial groups.

There are eleven named rapids within Westwater Canyon that range in difficulty up to Class IV. The first two are Wild Horse and Little Dolores (a.k.a. Little D). A great play spot for kayakers forms in the second part of Little D in low to medium water levels. The most significant rapids lie within a two-mile stretch of the inner canyon, formed by pre-Cambrian metamorphic rock. Rapids here include (in order): Marble Canyon, Staircase, Big Hummer, Funnel Falls, Surprise, Skull, Bowling Alley, Sock-It-To-Me, and Last Chance. The most challenging rapids are Funnel Falls (especially at high water), Skull, and Sock-It-To-Me. The BLM River Rangers can provide you with specific information regarding the rapids during the check-in process.

with a 1.5 mile (loop) interpretive trail. There is also an interpretive kiosk
that describes the numerous dinosaurs that have come from Rabbit Valley. This

section for vehicle length and number limitations for their selected site(s).

Please note, roads are not maintained and can be narrow and rough. Access to
Knowles Overlook is through a dry stream bed and changes quickly with passing
storms. 4-wheel drive and high clearance may be needed to access Knowles
Overlook. The best sites for RVs are the Koniklos (Equestrian) and Fluffle
campgrounds and select High North sites.

Located in western Colorado, the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area
offers stunning views and endless recreational opportunities ranging from
camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-roading. Visit
Rabbit Valley for an amazing outdoor family adventure or to find solitude on

The newly expanded campsites and facilities are located with easy access to
I-70 and within minutes of the City of Fruita and Grand Junction, Colorado for

improvements, and development of the Rabbity Valley experience. Reservations
are required for all camping within Rabbit Valley.

  * High North Campground
    * Site one is a group use site that can accommodate vehicles up to 60 feet in length. 
    * Vehicles longer than 50 feet will want to consider approaching the campground from the north via Hwy-6 as the access road from I-70 requires navigating a tight switchback turn. 
    * All other sites can accommodate two vehicles of various lengths, see individual site details for vehicle length limitations.

    * This campground is intended to be used solely by visitors who visit Rabbit Valley for horseback riding.

Colorado Plateau. With scenic views of the Colorado River, the San Juan and La
Sal Mountains, the Colorado National Monument, and the western flanks of the
10,000 ft. Grand Mesa - the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, make
this a must-see area.

This area is known for its paleontological resources with the family friendly
hike the “Trail Trough Time.” Here you can learn about this area’s history and
experience dinosaur bones on the landscape through a self-guided interpretive
hike.

Vegetation here is sparse, with only occasional green-ups and wildflower
blooms following wet weather. Average annual precipitation is less than 10
inches. Temperature extremes range from below zero to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Temperatures are more moderate during the spring and fall.

The Rabbit Valley Area is just west of Fruita CO, which serves as a hub for
outdoor recreation on nearby public lands including the red-rock canyons of
Colorado National Monument, and the rest of the McInnis Canyons National

Horsethief section of the Colorado River, Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness and

Rattlesnake and Mee Canyon provide outstanding opportunities for solitude and
primitive recreation. Geologic features in this area include arches, spires,
windows, giant alcoves and desert patina. Between these canyons are pinon-
juniper covered mesas which slope downward to the Colorado River. RATTLESNAKE
ARCHES: A short section connecting the top of the mesa to the bench below the
arches is rocky and steep and requires extra caution - it is not recommended.
From the trailhead travel 0.5 miles to an intersection. To the left takes you
to an area where you can view the arches from above. To the right takes you to
the Lower Arches Trail, which is 5 miles round trip (out and back). In 0.2
miles the trail splits - to the right goes to Pollock Bench Trailhead; stay to
the left for the arches trail. Camping is NOT permitted within 1/4 mile of the
Rattlesnake Arches Loop and along the access road to the trailhead. MEE
CANYON: The trail into Mee Canyon is primitive and only marked with rock
cairns. The route steeply descends sandstone layers with exposed cliffs.
Camping is NOT permitted at the Mee Canyon Alcove. **Leave No Trace
