Encompassing six major mountain ranges and seven distinct life zones, Desert
NWR showcases the abundance and variety of nature that can be found in
Southern Nevada, all just a short drive from Las Vegas.  
  
Created in 1936 to provide habitat and protection for desert bighorn sheep and
other desert wildlife, Desert NWR is the largest wildlife refuge outside of
Alaska. At 1.6 million acres (643,000 hectares), the refuge can cover Rhode
Island twice - and still have enough room left over for a quarter of a million
football fields. Teeming with diversity over a vast landscape, Desert NWR
boasts over 500 plant species as it transitions from the Mojave to the Great
Basin Desert.  
  
While Desert NWR has been home to people for thousands of years, from Newe
(Western Shoshone) and Nuwu/Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute/Chemehuevi) to ranch
homesteaders, the refuge still remains largely unchanged by human hands. Over
1.3 million acres (536,000 hectares) of the refuge is proposed wilderness and
has been managed as de facto wilderness since 1974. See collared lizards
sunning on rocks, hunt for tracks of elusive mountain lions, or grab your
binoculars for a better look at our 320 bird species. A unique and solitary

Red Rock Canyon's standard, RV, and group campsites are located in the
stunning Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, an approximate 20 mile
drive from "The Las Vegas Strip." Visitors enjoy hiking, rock climbing, bike
riding and scenic driving in this unique Mojave Desert environment.

**Note:** If visitors would like to visit the scenic drive, they must have a
separate timed entry reservation for each day they plan to enter the scenic
drive. Reservations are required October 1 to May 31, 8am -5pm.

## Recreation

The Red Rock Scenic Drive & Visitor Center is located 3 miles from the
campground. If visitors would like to visit the scenic drive, **they must have
a separate timed entry reservation for each day they plan to enter the scenic
drive.** Reservations are required October 1 to May 31, 8am -5pm. Red
Spring/Calico Basin is located 2 miles from the campground and is a no fee
area and does not require a reservation.

Activities available are miles of hiking trails, rock climbing, horseback
riding, mountain biking, and road biking. Guided hikes and educational
programs available on certain days at the Visitor’s Center.

## Facilities

Our campground facilities are as follows:

  * 53 individual standard sites with a max of 10 people and 2 vehicles are allowed per site. All standard sites contain picnic tables, grills, and firepits. Grills and firepits available only as fire restrictions allow. Some individual standard sites have shaded picnic table areas. Common vault toilets, trashcans, and drinking water are provided.
  * 3 fully accessible campsites. At these sites, in addition to the parking spot having a concrete surface, as they do at most of the other sites at the facility, there are concrete pathways leading to the restrooms, which are all accessible. 
  * 10 walk-to sites with a max of 1 tent and 1 vehicle per site. All walk-to sites contain picnic tables and grills. Grills available only as fire restrictions allow. Common vault toilets, trashcans, and drinking water are provided.
  * 6 RV Sites which have room for 1 RV and 1 vehicle per site. Common vault toilets, trashcans, and drinking water are provided. **There are no hookup services (electrical, propane/gas, water tank filling, or grey/black water disposal).**
  * 7 large group sites can accommodate up to 50 people and 8 vehicles per site. All group sites have a shaded picnic table area. Each group site is primarily tenting with 10 individual small tent areas. Common vault toilets, trashcans, and drinking water are provided nearby. Grills and campfire circles available only as fire restrictions allow. 
  * Parking is limited to the campsite's designated parking. There are no extra parking areas and no Day Use Area in the campground.
  * **All campsites must be reserved online at Recreation.gov**

Explore the peak tops, rolling sandstone ridges, steep walled canyons which
highlight special wildlife, vegetation, and cultural history. The campground
is in a quiet bowl near some of the most popular rock climbing destinations in
the country, providing privacy with limited shade.

**Changes or Modifying a Reservation**

If your **new stay dates are completely different** from your original stay
dates, **there is a $10 change fee (per reserved site)**. There are no
additional fees for:

  * Adding or removing nights (leaving early) to your stay.

  * Changing to a different campsite.

**No Shows**

Visitors have _until check-out time on the day after the scheduled arrival
date_ to check in without being considered a no-show customer. No-show
customers will forfeit your recreation fees paid unless requested thru
recreation.gov. Refunds requested thru recreation.gov for no shows will be
charged a **$20.00 no-show fee and first night's recreation use fee** for the
campsite

**Cancellations**

You can cancel the reservation any time the day before of your scheduled
arrival date. You will receive a refund for your stay, minus the following
fees:

  * $10 cancellation fee

  * Any reservation fees (only if paid when booking)

  * Any previous change fees

  * Late cancellation fees (if applicable) of your **first night's recreation use fee**

We have a Climbing Ranger that has made these awesome signs that literally shows all of the awesome climbs at Red Rock Canyon from Traditional climbing to sport climbing to bouldering as well climbing outside of the scenic loop. Come take a look at the signage which is located inside the group area of the campground. Its worth a look they are awesome.

We now have a official office at the campground to help with campers to have a good experience with there checking in and checking out of their site. We are live with Recreation.gov and can help with many aspects of the reservation system. We have a lot of information regarding the area and maps for hiking and climbing for our regular campers or our new campers that have never been here. We can help them with where to go for specific things and places. We want there experience here at Red Rock Campground to be a wonderful one and to come back each and every year. We also can assist a camper to make a reservation right when they are here through our office. When you arrive at the campground please stop in to check into your site and receive you required vehicle pass. As well if there is any information you are needing or wanting just ask and we will help as much  as we can.

Besides the picture on it this signage is very important as it has a lot of good information. It is next to the above signs so take a look while you are looking at the other ones. Our Awesome Ranger  who made these is a climber so is super knowledgeable.

We here at  Red Rock Campground offer a really fun  program for adults and children. We have a Red Rock Ranger come out to our Amphitheater and do a discussion on a lot of different things local to the area. It might be about animals or local history of the area, But always fun and exciting. We have a campfire weather permitting.  Campers love to get involved with questions and just information, as some of our visitors its their first time to the area and are very interested. Our Ranger is very good on sparking the interest of our campers so come and have fun as the information that is discussed is  fun. So its usually in the evening where you can have a good day at red rock canyon and then come back to the campground and relax in the sitting area around a nice fire and enjoy.
