The Orilla Verde Recreation Area is located within the Rio Grande Del Norte
National Monument and along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. Nestled
along the banks of the Rio Grande and within the steep-walled Rio Grande
Gorge, the campgrounds in this area offer nearby access to the river. The
elevation along the river is 6,100 feet and the steep canyon rises 800 feet
from the river to the Gorge rim.

Gentle waters with occasional small rapids flow through Orilla Verde,
providing an ideal setting for many recreational activities. Because of the
dramatic changes in elevation and the diversity of plant life, Orilla Verde
draws many species of animals, including raptors (such as eagles and hawks),
songbirds, waterfowl, beaver, cougar, ringtail, mule deer, and more. The Rio
Grande also has attracted humans since prehistoric times. Evidence of ancient
peoples is found throughout the Recreation Area in the form of petroglyphs on
the rocks and many other types of archaeological sites.

The climate at Orilla Verde is semi-arid, with summer thunderstorms common in
July and August, and snow possible from October through March. Summer
temperatures range from 45 to 90 degrees, and winter temperatures range from
-15 to 45 degrees.

must not be at the other individual’s campsites unless the additional site is
paid is purchased. Camping must be confined to the group shelter area and must
not spill over into individual sites. There is a small boat launch at the camp
ground where boats/rafts must be carried to (vehicles can not back down the
ramp). Responsible party should check in with the camp host upon arrival.

double sites each with two tables and a fire ring, and two group shelters
located west of the campground. Vault toilets, drinking water from faucets,
and trash removal are provided. Firewood is available to purchase from the

B), which are accessible, are located west of the campground and are equipped

## Overview

On February 2, 1912, Aldo Leopold (1887–1948) wrote to his fiancée, Estella
Bergère, in Santa Fe that the Forest Service had appropriated $650 to build a
new supervisor’s quarters he had designed at Tres Piedras, New Mexico,
northwest of Taos. At the time, Leopold was about to become the new Forest
Supervisor of the Carson National Forest in Tres Piedras. Later that year, he
built the house, which the newly married couple decided to call “Mi Casita”.
Leopold was transferred to Tres Piedras from the Apache National Forest in
Arizona in 1911. It was here that he started to formulate his land ethic that
would find its way into his classic, Sand County Almanac. He started to see
land holistically and to recognize that this perspective was essential to its
wise management. Today we call this ecosystem management. Aldo Leopold is
considered by many to be the father of wildlife ecology.

The Aldo Leopold House offers exceptional three-season access and
opportunities in this historic home only ½ hr. west of Taos, New Mexico. The
home is a Craftsman Style Bungalow and was restored by Historicorps and the
Carson NF in 2005.

This full-amenity house accommodates up to 8 people: two queen beds and 6
twins. Guests are responsible for their own safety and certain necessities
(see below).

The house is located in a rural area of Northern New Mexico. There is very
limited cell phone service and the nearest gas station is located in Antonito,
Colorado. (30 miles north).

north off Hwy 64. Surrounded by pine trees, a stay at the Aldo Leopold House
will take you back to a simpler time.

The Leopold house is approximately 1300 Sq. Ft. There is a dining room with a
large table and chairs. The home has four bedrooms with beds for up to 8
people. The house has a fully equipped kitchen, and a large covered front
porch, and a back porch with a picnic table. There is a gas range, oven,
microwave, fully equipped kitchen, indoor plumbing, flush toilet, and claw
foot bathtub/shower. There is only one bathroom in the home and is on the
first floor. **The fireplace is not for use.** Parking is available on site
and can accommodate approximately 8 vehicles. No RVs or tent camping is
allowed. Guests will need to provide sleeping bags/linens, towels, toilet
paper, paper towels, coffee, hand soap, and dish soap, etc. This is a non-
smoking facility.

**Grills, campfires, and any outdoor cooking are NOT allowed on the back and
front porches, nor within the area surrounding the house. Fire danger is
always a concern in the Southwest.**

faces eastward across the great sage plain and the Rio Grande Gorge toward

The Cruces Basin wilderness is approximately 25 miles west of the house and has amazing opportunities for solitude. The town of Taos is 30 miles to the east. Taos Pueblo National Heritage site is located a few miles north of the Town of Taos. Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs is located 60 miles south of the house. Between the house and the Town of Taos lies the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. There are opportunities to ride the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, riders can board the train in Chama NM or Antonito CO.</p>

Penasco Mountain. Along the Upper Cutoff Trail, views of Picuris Mountain are
readily available. The trails are popular for hiking, mountain biking,
snowshoeing and cross-country skiing and are rated easy to more difficult. The
Amole Canyon Trailhead also provides access to the Forest's Motorized Trail
System via Trail 182, the Tio Maes Trail.

## Facilities

This location provides gated access, twin barbecue grills, picnic tables and a
group-sized fire ring. In addition, accessible twin vault toilets with a paved
path to the shelter are provided. There is no water at this facility and no
trash service. Please bring all the water you will need for your stay and pack
out your trash.  
  

There is group camping for up to 100 people with 4 paved single vehicle
parking spots, and gravel spots for passenger vehicles or camper trailers/RVs.
All designated parking is surfaced with gravel or pavement. The pull-thrus can
either be used for passenger vehicles or RVs and camp trailers. All parking,
regardless of vehicle type, must be on surfaced parking areas.

The group camping area has been constructed within a stand of tall ponderosa
pine trees. The shelter has been constructed on a small hill overlooking a
pristine meadow.

Cimarron Campground is located in the scenic Valle Vidal within Carson
National Forest in northern New Mexico, at an elevation of 9,300 feet. The
sites are tucked among spruce, aspen and fir trees, and the camp offers an
open range feel.  
  
Visitors have opportunities to enjoy a variety of recreational activities in a
picturesque setting. Viewing wildlife and simply relaxing in the mountain air
are popular activities.

## Recreation

Anglers can fish for Rio Grande cutthroat trout in Comanche Creek and the Rio
Pueblo. Nearby Shuree Ponds offers excellent fishing. The smaller pond is a
fishing hole for kids 12 and under. The main pond is stocked with rainbow
trout and is also popular for float tubing.  
  
The area around the campground is open to horseback riding, and there are few
maintained trails. Elk and deer hunting is excellent.

The campground contains 36 overnight campsites, which includes eleven horse
sites and one double site. Vault toilets are provided.  
Sites are equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. Horse
corrals and water troughs are available in the campground. A host is on-site.

## Natural Features

Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.5
million acres within the Carson National Forest. Elevations range from 6,000
feet to 13,161 feet at Wheeler Peak, the highest in New Mexico.  
  
Big game animals roam the Carson, including mule deer, elk, antelope, black
bear, mountain lion and bighorn sheep. Many species of smaller animals and
songbirds can also been found in the forest.

Echo Amphitheater is a natural amphitheater located on the Carson National
Forest in Rio Arriba County, in Northern New Mexico. .

Echo Amphitheater Recreation Site offers opportunities for hiking, nature
viewing, camping, and picnicking.

## Facilities

Stay for a short time, the entire day, or overnight! This site has multiple
picnic/shade ramada options, vault toilets, a paved walkway up to the
amphitheater, a large group shelter, and eight campsites with electric hook-
ups. Campsites can accomodate small and medium-sized RVs, camper vans, and
tents at some sites. Plus, there are two double sites that provide additional
parking.

red vertical stripes down the otherwise horizontally stratified cliff wall are
streaks of mineral varnish that provides a colorful contrast to the sandstone
cliff. This colorful geological feature combined with its unusual auditory
properties no doubt fed the legend of myth associated with the Echo
Amphitheater

## Overview

The El Rito Campground Group Shelter is situated along El Rito Creek and is
part of a larger campground, El Rito Campground. The group shelter and
campground are located approximately 5 miles from the small village of El
Rito. Elevation of the group shelter is 7,600 feet with the predominant
vegetation being pinon, cottonwood, spruce, juniper and gambel oak.

This is a **great place** to host your family and friends, graduation parties,
organization meetings, and school events. Stay for the day or make it an
overnight! Visitors can enjoy hiking and fishing, plus there are also nearby
opportunities for sport and traditional climbing . Wildlife (depending on the
season) may include mule deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and racoons plus the rare
sighting of a bear or mountain lion. The campground is situated along the
banks of the El Rito Creek.

**Typical season** of use is May 1 to October 1. **Check-in at the site is
1:00 PM on the start date of your reservation. Check-out is 11:00 AM on the
last day of your reservation.**

## Recreation

The nearby creek is great for fishing and enjoying nature. Look for birds
flitting around the water in search of their next aquatic meal and splash
around in the creek on hot days when the water is lower and you need to cool
off. The water from this creek begins in the mountains as snow and rain runoff
and travels along the corridor shared with the picnic shelter/camping area.
Cross the creek and you will find adventures at the base of the red cliffs.
Can you spot the hawk flying overhead and was that a chipmunk that just ran
past you?!

Please **do not** climb the cliffs unless you are an experienced rope/harness
climber. There are specific climbing areas designed for such adventures in the
nearby vicinity.

The beautiful, majestic timber shelter was constructed on a concrete
foundation in 2018 and is situated in a big grassy meadow 200 feet from the
river. Amenities included with your reservation of the group site include
**1)** a large grill with pedestal at the shelter, **2)** seven picnic tables,
four of which are located at the shelter, **3)** three additional campfire
rings situated throughout the site, **4)** a vault toilet, **5)** one trash
receptacle, **6)** and space for three large RV trailers and ample tent
camping.

This is a fenced and gated area reserved exclusively through recreation.gov so
you'll not have to stress about whether the site will be available for your
special event.

Hopewell Lake Campground sits next to its scenic namesake lake between Tres

Boundary. The route is marked by signs. From the boundary, travel 7 miles on
Forest Service Road 1950. These graveled roads are not maintained during the
rainy season and may be passable only with a four wheel drive vehicle.

campground. Sites are best suited for tent camping and small campers/camp
trailers. Three lakes provide fishing opportunities amid a setting of quiet
conifers and aspen. Summer's quiet beauty turns to gold as autumn touches the
aspen and rewards campers lingering in the area.

**Safety Information**

Access road to Trout Lakes is extremely hazardous when wet. This road is
graveled from U.S. Highway 84 for three miles. The remainder is not graveled
and is extremely slick and hazardous when wet. Monsoon rains make this road
impassable. High clearance vehicle and four-wheel drive is recommended. Large
RVs or camper trailers are allowed but not recommended because of the road.

**General Information:**

Be extremely cautious with fire and use only the fireplaces provided. Please
do not cut down trees or shrubs; they provide natural scenery and shade-not
firewood. Please do not carve on the trees. Carving leaves a wound where
fungus can enter and kill the tree.

Please do not deposit fish remains in the lakes and clean fish away from the
water. Please wrap fish remains and other highly spoilage meats, food, etc.,
in small plastic bags, then in bread wrappers, and/or newspapers. Pack out all
trash on your way out of the campground and fishing area.

Please pick up litter around your campsite and pack it out with you. Also
please read and comply with the posted regulations.
