The Lankin Dome WSA encompasses 6,316 acres of BLM-administered land,
including 360 acres of surface split-estate lands within the boundaries. This
WSA is located in Fremont County, about 10 miles east of Jeffrey City.  
  
Lankin Dome consists of two landforms: the uplifted mountains of reddish
granite rocks, slabs and exfoliated domes, and the flats of Nolen Pocket north
and west of the rocks.  
  
The Lankin Dome WSA offers outstanding opportunities for primitive and
unconfined recreation, including rock climbing, hiking, backpacking and
hunting. Lankin Dome, the most prominent feature of the unit, has long been an
attraction to rock climbers. The area's wooded pockets make suitable
backpacking destinations. Hunting for pronghorn is outstanding on the flats
because game is abundant and packing distances are short.  
  
The area is mixed with private and public lands, permission is required when
crossing private land.

The Split Rock WSA encompasses 1,789 acres, including 40 acres of surface
split-estate and 40 acres of private land inholding within the boundaries. The
Split Rock WSA offers outstanding opportunities for a primitive and unconfined
type of recreation, including rock climbing, hiking, sightseeing, backpacking
and hunting.  
  
Split Rock and McIntosh Peak have long been attractive to rock climbers.
Hunting for pronghorn is outstanding on the flats because game is abundant and

Bighorn sheep historically inhabited this area, but the only big game species
currently in residence are elk, antelope and mule deer. Golden eagles, prairie

about 31 miles east of Jeffrey City. The topography in the area is composed
almost entirely of rough, broken granite domes and outcrops. The Miller Spring
WSA offers outstanding opportunities for a primitive and unconfined type of
recreation ? rock climbing, hiking, camping, photography, nature study,
sightseeing, backpacking and hunting. Primitive campsites are available in a
few places where grassy meadows, shelter and concealment exist. The lack of
well-distributed campsites might cause some visitor overlap and confinement of
use. Hunting for pronghorn is outstanding on the flats because game is
abundant and packing distances are short. The area is mixed with private and
public lands, permission is required when crossing private land.

Four National Historic Trails (NHTs), the Oregon, Mormon Pioneer, California,
and Pony Express, share the same corridor through central Wyoming known as the
South Pass region. This portion of the trail corridor has special significance
because it contains many miles of well-preserved trail and numerous nationally
recognized sites. In addition, the landscape surrounding this segment looks
virtually the same as it did 150 years ago when the first emigrants passed
through the area.  
  
The trails facilitated a major part of the westward expansion of the United
States during the 19th century and area a major part of the colorful history
of the Rocky Mountain west.  
  
Important historical sites along the trail include Independence Rock, Devil's
Gate, Split Rock, Ice Slough, Rocky Ridge, Willie's Handcart Disaster Site,
South Pass and Parting of the Ways. In addition to the above, there are
numerous state stops, telegraph stations, military posts and river crossings
that played an important role in the history of the trails. Highway turnouts
near many of the sites contain interpretive markers and provide excellent
vantage points from which to view the trail corridor and the surrounding
countryside.  
  
While much of the NHT corridor in Wyoming is undisturbed, some portions have
been improved and are now two-track or graded roads. Other portions have been
obliterated by highway construction. However, visible trail remnants can be
seen from Independence Rock to Farson, Wyoming.

fir, pine, aspen and cottonwood in the drainages. The Savage Peak WSA affords
a variety of opportunities for primitive and unconfined recreation including
hiking, camping, backpacking, hunting, rock climbing, nature study and
photography. The Savage Peak WSA contains great vertical relief. Large pockets
of open grass and sagebrush on the west are surrounded by steeply rising
slopes. The size of the area and its diverse topography combine to provide
some high quality opportunities for primitive recreation. The area is mixed
with private and public lands, permission is required when crossing private
land.
