Steamboat Lake Interpretive Site

Located in central Wyoming in a high plains basin near the headwaters of the
“Platte–Kansas Rivers” ecosystem, the Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge lies
approximately 47 miles southwest of the city of Casper. Pathfinder Dam
construction was completed in 1909, creating the first reservoir on the North
Platte River. At the same time, the Pathfinder Wildlife Refuge (later renamed
“Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge”) was established as an overlay refuge on
Bureau of Reclamation lands on the reservoir. This large body of water was
very attractive to waterbirds, and where the refuge once offered a unique
environment in this semiarid region of Wyoming, the reservoir on which it is
situated is now part of a larger system of reservoirs including Alcova to the
north and Seminoe to the south. Major habitat types of the Pathfinder National
Wildlife Refuge include open water wetlands, sagebrush uplands, and alkali
flats. Average precipitation for the area is 10" annually, with summer highs
near 100 and winter lows around -40 degrees Fahrenheit. High winds often
create ground blizzard conditions in the winter with drifted snow.

split-estate or private inholdings. Located in Natrona County about 31 miles
east of Jeffrey City, this WSA is rugged and mountainous with dense strands of
fir, pine, aspen and cottonwood in the drainages. The Savage Peak WSA affords
a variety of opportunities for primitive and unconfined recreation including
hiking, camping, backpacking, hunting, rock climbing, nature study and
photography. The Savage Peak WSA contains great vertical relief. Large pockets
of open grass and sagebrush on the west are surrounded by steeply rising
slopes. The size of the area and its diverse topography combine to provide
some high quality opportunities for primitive recreation. The area is mixed
with private and public lands, permission is required when crossing private
land.

Sweetwater Rocks (Savage Peak)

The North Platte Project extends 111 miles along the river valley from near
Guernsey, Wyoming to below Bridgeport, Nebraska. Pathfinder Dam and Reservoir
are part of this project. Pathfinder Dam is one of the first constructed by
the Reclamation Service (now the Bureau of Reclamation). Listed in the
National Register of Historic Places, Pathfinder Dam is the primary historic
attraction at the reservoir. Construction of the masonry dam between 1905 and
1909 was a major engineering feat. A small interpretive center is located in
the historic dam tender's house. The dam is in a granite canyon on the North
Platte River about 3 miles below its junction with the Sweetwater River. Parts
of the reservoir are included in the Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge.
There are 3 campgrounds and 3 boat ramps. Pathfinder facilities. Available
fish species include brown trout, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, ohrid trout,
and walleye. Rainbow and cutthroat trout are stocked annually in the
reservoir. The Pathfinder Interpretive Center and 1.7-mile interpretive trail
are located near the dam. The interpretive trail may be accessed across the

almost entirely of rough, broken granite domes and outcrops. The Miller Spring
WSA offers outstanding opportunities for a primitive and unconfined type of
recreation ? rock climbing, hiking, camping, photography, nature study,
sightseeing, backpacking and hunting. Primitive campsites are available in a
few places where grassy meadows, shelter and concealment exist. The lack of
well-distributed campsites might cause some visitor overlap and confinement of
use. Hunting for pronghorn is outstanding on the flats because game is
abundant and packing distances are short. The area is mixed with private and
public lands, permission is required when crossing private land.

2,470 surface acres. Facilities include 6 campgrounds, 8 boat ramps,
interpretive trail and marina concession. Available fish species include brown
trout, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and walleye. Rainbow and brown trout
are stocked annually. Dinosaur interpretive trail is located near Cottonwood
Creek Beach. A barrier-free fishing pier, restroom and shelter are located at
Black Beach. Pathfinder Bird Refuge, Pathfinder Reservoir, and Seminoe

Alcova Reservoir

The North Platte River is the only floatable waterway in central Wyoming and
has become the destination fishery for the state. Scenic and recreational
values of the North Platte River are derived from a combination of
environmental factors and management practices. The river is highly valued as
a class 1 fishery. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has rated it as a blue
ribbon fishery. Game fish species include rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout.
The most common recreation activities are fishing, floating, waterfowl
hunting, and observing wildlife. There are also opportunities for picnicking
and camping. This river has become a vital part of the social and economic
values of central Wyoming.

Gray Reef Dam, Glendo Unit, PSMBP, is on the North Platte River about 27 miles
southwest of Casper, Wyoming and 2 miles downstream from Alcova Dam. Although
the reservoir has a total capacity of 1,800 acre-feet with a surface area of
182 acres, under its prescribed function as a reregulating reservoir, the
water surface elevation of Gray Reef fluctuates widely from nearly full to
nearly empty on a daily basis. Therefore, fish are not stocked in the
reservoir. A barrier-free fishing pier, restroom and primitive campground are
located below the dam. Canoes and other small watercraft may be launched from
the campground. Available species include brown trout, cutthroat trout,
rainbow trout, and walleye. Rainbow and cutthroat are stocked in the river
below Gray Reef Dam. A boat ramp and parking lot are located one-half mile
