Spectacle Lake is a 396 acre storage reservoir in the Whitestone Coulee Unit
of the Okanogan-Similkameen Division of the Chief Joseph Dam Project and
located near Tonasket, Washington. This is a Reclamation irrigation project
associated with Chief Joseph Dam but not a part of the dam. Fish species
include rainbow trout. The lake is managed as a trout fishery and possession
of other species is prohibited. Fishing season from mid-April to Oct. 1.
Apples, pears, cherries, and alfalfa hay are the chief crops produced in the
project area. The apples are world famous for their high quality.

The Split Rock Day-Use Area is located on the only public sandy beach on
Palmer Lake, in northern Okanogan County. Although Palmer Lake is the second
largest lake in Okanogan County, public access to it is limited. As a result,
this small, day-use site is very popular for picnicking, swimming, beach
activities, and fishing. A concrete boat ramp offers access for boaters
interested in fishing for small mouth bass, crappie, rainbow trout, and
burbot, as well as for water skiing and other boating. Passing visitors also
frequently stop for wildlife viewing.

Split Rock Day Use Area

Hidden deep within the highlands of northern Okanogan County, visitors will
discover a jewel of a mountain lake. Aspen tree groves and sagebrush line the
shores, providing a scenic backdrop to many lakeside activities. Mountain
goats are often seen high on the surrounding mountain sides. Try your luck fly
fishing for trout or take a peaceful hike in the 5,518-acre Chopaka Mountain
Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The WSA is accessed by non-motorized trails
through the Chopaka Lake campground.

## Know Before You Go:

  * Chopaka Lake is open YEAR ROUND, but due to snow conditions, road access is limited during the winter. Drive in access is available from approximately mid-April to mid-November. 
  * Motorized vehicles and mechanized transport (including bicycles) are not allowed in the WSA.
  * Hike or boat-in camping is allowed in the WSA, but there are no developed campsites.
  * The BLM Chopaka Lake campground has eight campsites with fire rings and a vault toilet.
  * Cellular phone coverage may be limited.

Remote Chopaka Lake and its surrounding hillsides are excellent places for
viewing wildlife. Catch a glimpse of bald and golden eagles, peregrine
falcons, bighorn sheep, black bear, mule deer, moose and mountain goats.
