Smithsonian Butte National Back Country Byway travels for 9.25 miles between
Rockville and Apple Valley, Utah, just south of Zion National Park. The Back
County Byway transports visitors from the Virgin River floodplain, through
pinyon-juniper woodlands, to sagebrush desert at the Big Plain Junction of
Highway 59. Spectacular views along the route include Smithsonian Butte, Eagle
Crags, Vermilion Cliffs within the Canaan Mountain Wilderness, and the
prominent sandstone pinnacles of Zion National Park. East of the Byway,
Gooseberry, Grafton, and Wire Mesas provide an extensive network of trails for
non-motorized recreation.

Camping is prohibited on federally managed lands within 1/2 mile of either
side of the Back Country Byway. Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM lands
throughout Gooseberry Mesa.

A short side trip of approximately 1.8 miles (3.6 miles round trip) leads to
the historic ghost town of Grafton, first settled in
1861(http://www.graftonheritage.org/). Several rehabilitated buildings and
interpretive information provide a glimpse into early pioneer life along the
Virgin River. Take the Bridge Road out of Rockville and turn right at mile 1.6
of the Back Country Byway for access.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: This route often becomes impassable during heavy rain and
periods of inclement winter weather. No services are available along the
Byway.

choose between “Easy/More Difficult” areas at three locations, and the
entirety of the ride can be taken clockwise and counter clockwise.

Wire Mesa Trail

Recommended Users: Mountain Bikers, Hikers. Singletrack. 1 mile in length

Difficulty: Extremely Difficult.

The Old Wood Road earned its namesake after it was built by pioneers to access
Grafton Mesa from the town below. You can still see remnants of the initial
construction holding the trail in place. The trail, and surrounding area are
HIGHLY sensitive cultural resources and should be treated with respect. Any
harm to cultural resources could result in trail closure. The trail begins on
the edge of Grafton Mesa, with a beautiful vista of the gates of Zion National
Park. Expect a steep, rocky descent along the entire trail, with sharp turns,
sudden drop-offs and precipitous exposure. Keep in mind that entire sections
of the trail may be washed out in places due to its location on a steep,
eroded slope. The trail becomes braided in several sections, allowing users to
choose one of several interconnected paths on their descent. Only expert
riders, comfortable with exposure should attempt the Grafton descent.

Difficult. From the trailhead, the trail heads southwest across slickrock,
towards the rim of the mesa. Rock cairns may be present along the length of
the trail to aid your navigation. Winding singletrack through pinion-juniper
forest stays near the rim at first, affording views towards Dalton Wash to the
west and the Virgin River valley and Gooseberry Mesa to the south.
Approximately 1 mile from the trailhead, a loop of the trail splits to the

designated sites. Each site is delineated with a numbered placard and metal
fire ring. Sites are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and occupancy
is limited to 14 days in a 28 day period. All sites are suitable for tent
camping but not all sites are accessible to RVs or trailers. Please contact
the St. George Field Office for current conditions and accessibility.

Please park, camp, and concentrate activity on durable surfaces to limit
impacts to vegetation and fragile soil crusts. Local roads may become
impassable during wet weather. If the roads are muddy and slippery, the trails
are too; please turn around if your tires are leaving a visible rut.

Restrooms are located at the nearby Sheep Bridge Trailhead, Jem Trailhead, and
Virgin Dam Trailhead. Please utilize these facilities or a portable toilet at
your site.

It is your responsibility to adhere to current fire restrictions. Campfires
are permitted in steel fire rings only. Never leave a campfire unattended and
make sure it’s DEAD OUT before leaving.

immediately drops down a steep, rugged slope and careens toward the cliff edge
on your right. Follow the narrow, winding track southeast as it traverses the
crumbling layers of sandstone, siltstone and mudstone below the mesa rim.
Expect a steep, rocky descent along the entire trail, with sharp turns, sudden
drop-offs and precipitous exposure. Keep in mind that entire sections of the
trail may be washed out in places due to its location on a steep, eroded
slope. The trail becomes braided in several sections, allowing users to choose
one of several interconnected paths on their descent.If you have time to look
up, you’ll be rewarded with dramatic vistas of colorful badlands in the
foreground, Gooseberry Mesa to the south, the craggy peaks of Canaan Mountain
Wilderness to the southeast and the majestic West Temple of Zion National Park
to the east.While keeping your eyes on the trail, you will experience a speedy
ride-through tour of local geology. The trail begins in the Chinle Formation
of the Upper Triassic Age atop the mesa then descends quickly through the
Moenkopi layer of the Lower Triassic, a blur of red sandstone under your
tires. Soon after, you are plummeting through talus from the Holocene to upper
Pleistocene Age before revisiting the Moenkopi Formation near the bottom of
the escarpment.Once the trail drops to rolling lowlands and levels out, find
your way back to SR 9 near Virgin by following the well-traveled dirt road
south. Note: This trail should only be considered by expert mountain
bicyclists. Throughout its length, it features narrow tread width, widely
variable and unpredictable tread surfaces, 20% or more average trail grade,

Flying Monkey Trail

"Shunes creek has its origins on the rim of the Vermillion Cliffs in the
Shunes Creek Canyon drainage within the Canaan Mountain Wilderness. It enters
the parcel from the east and exits into the Canaan Mountain Wilderness on the
west. Shunes Creek has exceptional scenery and outstanding geologic features
that are similar to those in Zion National Park. Exploration and rock climbing
opportunities abound in the area and are enhanced by their proximity to Zion.

Shunes Creek Wild and Scenic River

Adjacent to the southeast boundary of Zion National Park, Canaan Mountain
Wilderness is comprised of approximately 44,500 acres of public land in
Washington County. In this wilderness, an 8-by-10 mile block of Navajo
Sandstone, bounded by 2,000-foot-high cliffs, has been sculpted by wind and
water over time into a landscape of soaring cliff walls, natural arches, and
slot canyons.

On the highest plateaus, stands of ponderosa pine are surrounded by cream-
colored slickrock. Pinyon pine, Utah juniper, scrub oak, and sagebrush cover
the mountain slopes, at lower elevations. Seeps in the canyon walls provide
water for hanging gardens of maidenhair fern, monkeyflower, and columbine.
Hawks, falcons, and golden eagles nest along the sandstone walls, while
ringtailed cats, deer, cougar, and black bear live on the plateaus and in the
canyon bottoms.

This wilderness provides opportunities for primitive recreational activities,
including hiking, equestrian trail riding, canyoneering, and camping. Several
routes exist on the southern end of the wilderness providing access to higher
elevations by way of steep canyons.

The Sawmill trail, however, follows an historic logging route and traverses a
large portion of the wilderness. Only one route is on the northern side and
provides access to Eagle Crags at about 5,200 feet. All of these routes are
primitive, not maintained on a regular basis, and not signed.

Virgin. It takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes to drive to the campground
from the South Entrance of Zion Canyon.

## Recreation

Barney's Trail leaves from the campground and provides access to Lava Point
Overlook and the West Rim Trail. The campground is also excellent for wildlife
watching and stargazing.

## Facilities

Lava Point is a primitive and dry campground. There is no potable water on
site so campers must bring their own. There are no electrical hookups or
outlets on site. Each campsite has a trash receptacle, picnic table, and fire
ring. Restroom facilities consist of pit toilets.

## Natural Features

Lava Point Campground is situated at 7,890 ft. (2405 m) above sea level
providing cooler temperatures for campers during southern Utah's hot summers.
Pine and Aspen trees create shade and protect campsites from wind on gustier
days. A short distance from the campground entrance is Lava Point Overlook
where campers can take in breathtaking panoramic views to the South towards
Zion Canyon.

South Entrance of Zion National Park in Springdale, UT. In between the

Starting **June 7, 2026** , Zion National Park will enforce vehicle size and
weight limits on the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway (ZMCH) from Canyon Junction to

## Overview

**Reservations for South Campground are available up to 14 days before your
arrival and may extend up to two days beyond this 14-day booking window.**

For visitors to Zion National Park, South Campground is an ideal place to
stay. Located near the park's south entrance, the campground is just a short

and specifically campfires and charcoal fires with campgrounds and picnic

Lambs Knoll Designated Dispersed Camping Area

With proximity to Zion National Park, the Lambs Knoll Climbing site features
stunning views of the Kolob Terrace and convenient access to outstanding
recreation. The sandstone crag boasts more than 25 established routes of
varying difficulty as well as a range of canyoneering objectives.

After significant improvements completed in 2018, The site now features a
developed trailhead with improved access road, day-use picnic area, and
restroom facility. The trailhead provides sufficient parking and access for
any vehicle.

The Kolob Terrace Road typically provides year-round access but may present
hazardous travel conditions during periods of snow and inclement winter
weather. Spring, summer, and fall provide dependable access and ideal
conditions for enjoying Lambs Knoll.

The Honeymoon Trail During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a primitive
wagon road was the principle travel route between the Mormon settlements in
northeastern Arizona and southern Utah. In the late 1870s, Mormon colonists
had been sent by church leaders to pioneer new settlements along Arizona’s
Little Colorado River. As the new settlements were remote and isolated, many
goods and services could only be obtained from the established Mormon
communities of southern Utah. After 1877, the Arizona Mormon settlers also
traveled to St. George, Utah to conduct church business and have their
marriage vows solemnized in the newly-completed St. George Temple. So many
newlyweds traveled the wagon road that it came to be known as “the Honeymoon
Trail”.Couples would travel in small groups for safety and companionship to
make this long-distance trek across the varied and rugged terrain of
northeastern Arizona and southwestern Utah. This journey typically began in
mid-November and required many weeks of hard travel to complete. The wagons
jolted across deep dry washes and slick rock, bogged down in deep sandy soils,
and became mired in muddy stream crossings. At Lee’s Ferry, John D. Lee and
his wife Emma provided regular ferry service for travelers, at one of the few
feasible crossings of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Their

Wagon travel on the Northern Route of the Old Spanish Trail began in 1847,
when the first Mormon settlement in Utah Territory was established east of the
Great Salt Lake. Exploration parties were immediately sent by church leaders
to identify locations suitable for colonization along the Old Spanish Trail,
to gain political control of the most important travel corridor in the
Intermountain West. In October of 1847, Jefferson Hunt, who had served in the
Mormon Battalion in California, led a group of 18 men, 130 pack mules, and a
single wagon to southern California to buy cattle, seed grain, and other
needed goods. The party arrived in San Bernardino after 45 days of travel,
having reportedly brought the first wagon over the Old Spanish Trail. The
success of this expedition encouraged others to follow, including large
numbers of prospectors and merchants “rushing” to the newly-discovered gold
deposits at Sutter’s Mill in northern California during the winter months when

Wagon travel on the Northern Route of the Old Spanish Trail began in 1847, when the first Mormon settlement in Utah Territory was established east of the Great Salt Lake.   Exploration parties were immediately sent by church leaders to identify locations suitable for colonization along the Old Spanish Trail, to gain political control of the most important travel corridor in the Intermountain West.   In October of 1847, Jefferson Hunt, who had served in the Mormon Battalion in California, led a group of 18 men, 130 pack mules, and a single wagon to southern California to buy cattle, seed grain, and other needed goods.   The party arrived in San Bernardino after 45 days of travel, having reportedly brought the first wagon over the Old Spanish Trail.  The success of this expedition encouraged others to follow, including large numbers of prospectors and merchants “rushing” to the newly-discovered gold deposits at Sutter’s Mill in northern California during the winter months when the passes of the high Sierras would be impassable. Cottonwood Point Wilderness

Blackridge Wilderness

Dominquez-Escalante Trail, 1776-1777, is a segment of the likely route
followed by the Dominquez-Escalante exploration party in 1776. The trail is
found on public lands managed by the St. George Field Office. As this small
party of hardy explorers from the Spanish colonies in New Mexico, led by
Franciscan friars Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante, made
just a single trek here, there are no visible traces of their trail. The route
that they traveled has been reconstructed by historians, based on the journal
that was kept by Velez de Escalante. White obelisk-shaped stone markers have
been placed on public lands to show the general trace of the Dominquez-
Escalante party through central Washington County. In July of 1776, the two
friars, accompanied by eight volunteers and outfitted with saddle horses, pack
animals, and some beef cattle on the hoof, left Santa Fe, New Mexico, on a
journey of exploration. Their goal was to find a route to the Spanish colonies
in coastal California that would take them north of the Grand Canyon and the
Colorado River. By such a route, they would avoid the Indian Tribes that had
been hostile to prior Spanish explorers and travel through less arid lands.
The trek of the Dominguez-Escalante party took them northwesterly into
Colorado, then to Utah, crossing the Colorado River near Moab. Relying on
information from Indian guides, the explorers reached Utah Lake, near Salt
Lake City, proceeding from there in a southwesterly direction. They arrived
near Cedar City in October of 1776. Low on provisions and fearing that the
approaching winter, the party decided to return home, rather than press on to
California. They traveled south along Ash Creek to its confluence with the
Virgin River, near modern-day Hurricane, in Washington County. Escalante's
journal suggests that the party camped on top of Sand Mountain, before
traveling south along Ft. Pearce Wash. From this point, they continued on a
meandering course east, fording the Colorado River near today's Navajo Bridge,
turned south to visit the villages of the Hopi and Zuni Tribes, and eventually
headed north along the Rio Grande River to Santa Fe. Arriving in Santa Fe on
January 2, 1777, the Dominquez-Escalante party had spent nearly six months
traveling a distance of approximately 2,000 miles. Fray Escalante's maps and
journal, which described the landscape and Native American tribes that they
encountered, were used by future explorers, including Lewis and Clark in 1803.

the larger footprints are classified as Eubrontes and the smaller as
Grallator. These names represent ichnogenera—groups based on footprint
characteristics rather than skeletal remains. The Grallator tracks at this
site are attributed to coelophysid dinosaurs such as Megapnosaurus, while the
Eubrontes tracks are widely accepted as having been made by a Dilophosaurus-
sized theropod.

The tracks are preserved on the Springdale Member of the Kayenta Formation,
making them Early Jurassic in age, approximately 190 million years old. The
rock is fine-grained reddish-brown and white sandstone, deposited in
environments that alternated between river channels and floodplains, creating
ideal conditions for preserving these remarkable trace fossils.

The site is open year-round with short daylight hours in winter. Spring and
fall offer the most comfortable temperatures. Summer visits require sun
protection and ample water, while winter may bring colder conditions.
