The Sheep Mountain WSA encompasses 23,250 acres of BLM-administered public
land, and 640 acres of split estate land. The WSA contains bare, rugged
badlands created by peaks and ridges broken by irregular, sharply cut
drainages radiating from the central portion of the area that is dominated by
Sheep Mountain. The Sheep Mountain WSA contains limited geologic and
paleontological resources and is occasionally used by wild horses. The Sheep
Mountain WSA and the rugged topography provide a resource base for a variety
of primitive recreation opportunities such as geologic sightseeing and
collecting, hunting, trapping, photography, hiking and backpackingThe network
of ridges and drainages radiating from Sheep Mountain provides many isolated
travel routes. The terrain is not so rugged as to significantly restrict or
confine travel. The eroded badlands are highly scenic and add visual
diversity.

The Bobcat Draw Badlands WSA encompasses 17,150 acres of BLM-administered land
and 1,390 acres of state land. The WSA offers special features and scenic
beauty which are outstanding. Terrain in the unit is highly unique and
variable in land form and color.  
  
Located in the Willwood geologic formation, it is famous for a Devil's Garden
of arches, goblins, castles and other fantastic or fanciful landforms.  
  
The WSA in within the Fifteenmile Wild Horse Herd Management Area. The
National Park Service has identified the Gooseberry Badlands and the east
ridge of Fifteenmile Creek, located near the WSA, as potential National
Natural Landmarks. The Bobcat Draw Badlands WSA, in combination with its size,
varied and rugged topography, diversity of landscape and scenic attributes,
contains outstanding opportunities for primitive and unconfined types of
recreation.  
  
The badland setting provides outstanding hiking, exploring and freedom of
movement opportunities. Rock collecting, wildlife viewing, hiking, hunting,
horseback riding, non-consumptive wildlife use, photography and geological
sightseeing are activities which occur in this WSA.

The McCullough Peaks Wild Horse Herd Management Area (HMA) is located 12 to 27
miles east of Cody (70 miles east of Yellowstone National Park) and
encompasses 109,814 acres of land, including the McCullough Peaks Wilderness
Study Area. The climate is typical of a cold desert with annual precipitation
averaging five to nine inches. Stock reservoirs and intermittent streams fed
by winter snows and spring runoff provide adequate water for the HMA.
Topography is highly variable, ranging from mostly flat to slightly rolling
foothills carved by drainages, to colorful badlands and desert mountains
featuring steep slopes, cliffs and canyons.  
  
A diversity of coat colors (bay, brown, black, sorrel, chestnut, white,
buckskin, gray, palomino, and blue, red and strawberry roans) and patterns
such as piebald and skewbald are found in the McCullough Peaks wild horses.
The animals tend to be moderate- to large-sized and habitat conditions are
such that the horses are in very good condition. The combination of size,
conformation, coat colors and patterns, and excellent physical condition have
become a draw for potential adopters and a matter of reputation for McCullough
Peaks horses.  
  
Be sure to bring your binoculars and always look on both sides of the roads
for both the mustangs and other wildlife!
