## Overview

Sheep Creek flows through an extremely narrow, winding canyon with sheer
vertical walls. High water flows are in the spring and provide for whitewater
for the most experienced boaters. Access to Sheep Creek is difficult because
of its remoteness and primitive roads.

Sheep Creek Wild and Scenic River

Hidden within a vast high desert plateau are deep canyons carved by the
Owyhee, Bruneau and Jarbidge Rivers in a remote area of southwestern Idaho.
Nearly 40 miles of Bruneau River's 50-mile total length are designated as
wild. Volcanic caves, canyons and spire-like hoodoos tower hundreds of feet
above whitewater rafters in this unique environment of unsurpassed solitude
and unique beauty. In early spring, this area brightens up with beautiful
desert flowers contrasted sharply against the dark volcanic rock. The
sagebrush plateaus of the Owyhee Uplands provides habitat for over 200 species
of wildlife. Soaring eagles and hawks can often be seen flying over the
skylines and nesting along the cliff faces here. The ancestors of the
Shoshone-Paiute and Shoshone-Bannock people have used these canyonlands for
thousands of years for shelter, weaponry, fish and game and water. From placid
pools to turbulent whitewater; from vertical cliffs to steep grassy slopes,
this area presents visitors with challenging and extraordinary experiences.
The Bruneau River has a short boating season, typically it only has enough
water to float in the spring. While this is a launch point for rafting or
kayaking the Bruneau Wild and Scenic River, no facilities exist at this site.

BLM manages more than 90,000 acres of public lands in the Bruneau-Jarbidge
Rivers Wilderness. The Owyhee Canyonlands is a huge and remote area of eastern
Oregon, southwestern Idaho and northern Nevada. Hidden within this vast high
desert plateau are deep canyons carved by the Owyhee, Bruneau and Jarbidge
Rivers. The rivers of the Owyhee and Bruneau-Jarbidge systems offer something
for nearly every level of boating experience. The Owyhee and Bruneau-Jarbidge
river systems provide visitors with unsurpassed solitude in canyons of unique
beauty and form. From placid pools to turbulent whitewater; from vertical
cliffs to steep grassy slopes; and from wildlife, such as California bighorn
sheep to wildflowers, including the Bruneau River flox, these rivers and their
canyons present visitors with challenging and extraordinary experiences. The
rivers offer challenging whitewater boating in an isolated setting. The
canyons and plateau provide ample opportunity for those who wish to explore
the area on foot. Sportsmen will find excellent fishing for trout and hunting
for upland birds and some big game. The truly adventurous can explore 180,000
acres of pristine lands in two nearby Wilderness Study Areas. The upper canyon
is the most scenic part and the easiest floating. Boaters can take out near
the scenic overlook at Rogerson, but you have to climb out of the steep
canyon. The second half, through Five Mile Rapids and Hot Springs Creek is
rocky and requires a lot of maneuvering. Only experienced boaters should
attempt the lower part of the Bruneau, especially at high water. The drive to
the put-in is an experience in itself, and you should be prepared. Go with
someone who knows the way, or hire a shuttle driver in Bruneau. From the
confluence of the two rivers to south of Bruneau is 56 miles of class II-IV
rapids.

patterns. The Bruneau Overlook is the only readily accessible spot to view
this spectacular canyon carved through basalt and rhyolite by the Bruneau
River. The opposite rim is 1,300 feet away and the distance from rim to
riverbed is 800 feet. From this spot near the northern end of the 60-mile
canyon, view the wild and scenic Bruneau River tumbling out of the Bruneau-
Jarbidge Rivers Wilderness.
