This rugged 1.5-mile trail offers an unlimited number of fantastic scenic
views with an equally impressive display of flora and fauna. Located
approximately 6 miles east of Ten Sleep and immediately north of U.S. Highway
16, the Salt Lick Trail is under 5700 feet in elevation with moderately
challenging climbs and descents. A restroom and an information kiosk are
located at the trailhead.

Salt Lick Trail

This area of fantastic rock formations is located at the foot of the Bighorn
Mountains at an elevation of 4,500 feet, close to the town of Ten Sleep.  
  
Otherworldly rock formations to scramble on make this a great day-use or
overnight camping area. Four camp sites with shade structures, tables, grills,
fire rings, and a restroom are provided. You will, however, need to pack in
your own water and pack out your own trash.  
  
The Castle Gardens Scenic Area is open year round.

The Honeycombs WSA encompasses 21,000 acres of BLM-administered land and 260
acres of split-estate land with minerals held by the state of Wyoming. It
consists of sharply eroded, strongly dissected badlands rolling to steep
hills. Elevations range from 4,400 feet to 5,000 feet where the western
boundary crosses the east fork of Nowater Creek. The soil colors vary from
reds, pinks and purples to shades of brown and tan. The badland character of
most of the WSA increases the visual interest of the area. Honeycombs WSA
contains outstanding opportunities for primitive and unconfined recreation,
ranging from passive activities to those requiring much physical exertion and
endurance. The opportunities for trapping furbearers and hunting deer and
antelope are widespread in the WSA. The quality of deer hunting is greater
because the topography and vegetation creates habitat more favorable to deer.
Outstanding opportunities for solitude exist because the rugged terrain,
steep-sided hills and winding drainages limit sight distances. Resources in
the WSA also support activities such as nature study, photography, rock
hounding, bird watching, and sightseeing. The colorful and heavily eroded
Willwood Formation provides an excellent opportunity for geologic study.

Creek, a topnotch trout stream. The steep canyon walls and massive rocks make
this trail highly scenic, and it is the only canyon along the west slope of
the Bighorn Mountains with a maintained trail. Paint Rock Creek is a superb
fishery for rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout.

is a steep and rocky journey to Paint Rock Creek where it meets the Paint Rock
Canyon Trail. The route to the Lone Tree Trail is marked by a sign on the Cold
Springs Road, about 6 miles beyond the Paint Rock Canyon trailhead.  
  
Horses or mountain bikes are not recommended on the Lone Tree Trail.

The Big Cedar Ridge Fossil Site is located in the great wide open southeast of
Worland. Seventy million years ago, a mudflow of volcanic ash suddenly
entombed the entire landscape around Big Cedar Ridge. The plants were
fossilized where they were growing. In the past 20 years, scientists have
identified over 100 new plant species and have been able to distinguish at
least five different types of insects that fed on the plants at Big Cedar
Ridge. Interpretive panels discuss the geology and illustrate the fossilized
plants of the area.

On BLM-managed land, reasonable amounts of common plant and invertebrate
fossils (like those from leaves, cones, seeds, clams and corals) can be
collected for personal use. Vertebrate fossils (like those from dinosaurs,
fish and turtles) and archeological artifacts cannot be collected without
permission from the local BLM office.

Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site

The Medicine Lodge WSA encompasses 7,740 acres of BLM-administered land with
no private or state inholdings. The WSA consists of spectacular canyon walls
towering 1,000 feet above Medicine Lodge Creek. Elevations range between 5,100
and 8,500 feet. The area includes crucial winter range for elk and deer.
Bighorn sheep may use parts of the WSA as summer range. Rich color
combinations, vertical or nearly vertical cliffs, spires and formations;
variation in form, pattern, texture and type of vegetation; and presence of
free-flowing, cascading water make the WSA highly scenic. Medicine Lodge WSA
contains outstanding opportunities for primitive and unconfined recreation.
Opportunities for hiking and climbing exist in Medicine Lodge Canyon. Medicine
Lodge Creek is a trout fishery of regional importance. Opportunity for fishing
appears greatest in the lower reaches of the creek. Excellent wildlife viewing
and hunting opportunities exist throughout the WSA. The juniper belt provides
cover and forage for deer. The shrub-steppe areas draw elk in the fall and
winter months. Both species are hunted heavily. Opportunities for viewing and
hunting small game, predators, and upland birds are also present throughout
the unit.
