During the summer of 1864, the Confederacy carried out a bold plan to turn the
tide of the Civil War in their favor. They planned to capture Washington, DC
and influence the election of 1864. On July 9, however, Federal soldiers
outnumbered three to one, fought gallantly along the banks of the Monocacy
River in an effort to buy time for Union reinforcement to arrive in
Washington, DC.

The Antietam Creek Campground is located at Mile 69.4 on the C&O; Canal

Nearby boat ramps at Dargan Bend and Snyders Landing provide motor boat access
to the river. Fishing is also a popular pastime in both the watered sections
of the C&O; Canal the Potomac River. Be sure to acquire a Maryland Fishing
License for those age 16 or older. West Virginia Licenses are approved for
fishing in the Potomac only.

## Facilities

The campground has 20 single campsites each with a picnic table, fire ring and
grill. Each campsite will accommodate up to eight campers. Protected pit
toilets are located between campsite #6 and campsite #7 adjacent to the
towpath. A second set of chemical toilets are available down the towpath.
Potable water is along the towpath at pumps (may not be available during cold
winter months). No vehicular traffic is allowed on the towpath and access to
the campsites is by foot only. Parking is allowed on the shoulder of Canal Rd
only.

## Natural Features

Antietam Creek Campground is just south of Sharpsburg, MD. Antietam Creek is a
typically mild and slow moving creek which feeds into the much larger and
faster Potomac River directly adjacent to the campsite. River rise and floods
can modify conditions quickly here.

Antietam National Battlefield, South Mountain State Park and Harpers Ferry
National Historical Park all provide additional hiking and history adventures
specifically about the Civil War Era.

## Overview

The picnic pavilion at the Carderock Recreation Area is a large covered
pavilion, open on three sides, that accommodates a maximum of 200 people.
Convenient and ample parking is available for all attending your event as
there are four parking lots. The pavilion is located between parking lots 1
and 2. Both flush toilet facilities are closed for emergency repair. Portable
toilets are located in parking lots 2 and 4.

## Recreation

The most popular activity for Carderock Pavilion attendees is hiking the three
sections (A, B and C) of the Billy Goat Trail, one of the most popular and
challenging rock hikes in the east. There are also many woodland trails for
beginners and experts alike.

Fishing is also a popular pastime in both the C&O; Canal and the Potomac
River. Be sure to acquire a Maryland fishing license for those age 16 or
older. Virginia licenses are approved for fishing in the Potomac only.

There are picnic tables in or around the pavilion and electricity (four
110-volt outlets) is available for your use. There are two large grills
outside the pavilion and a large fireplace within the pavilion. Water and
portable toilets are located nearby. There is a softball field and an area for
volleyball or relay games. Horseshoe pits are near the front of the pavilion.
All are for your use during your event. You must provide the sports equipment,
though poles are provided for volleyball or badminton.

Carderock Paviion is just south of the Great Falls of the Potomac and Mather
Gorge. These two stunning features provide an excellent example of local
geology while showing the sheer force and power of nature.

The Fifteen Mile Creek Campground is located at Mile 140 on the C&O; Canal
Towpath, in the town of Little Orleans upstream of Hancock and downstream of
Paw Paw, WV, on the Maryland side of the of the Potomac River. The campsites
are drive-in, large enough to park a small fifth wheel/travel trailer/RV/pop-
out with a 20' ft. maximum. **_Alcoholic beverages are prohibited._**

## Recreation

The most popular activity for Fifteen Mile Creek campers is boating and
fishing. The campground has a boat ramp for easy access to the Potomac River
for kayakers and fisherman alike. Be sure to acquire a Maryland Fishing
License for those age 16 or older.

## Facilities

The campground has nine single drive-in campsites. There is one group site
available that does not have direct vehicle access. The group site can
accommodate 30 people. Each single will accommodate up to eight people. Single
campsites have a picnic table, fire ring and grill. Protected pit toilets are
located between campsite #3 and campsite #4 along the dead end circle. Potable
hand pump water is available from April 15 - October 31. No motor vehicle
traffic is allowed on the towpath. Parking is allowed in the drive-in
campsites and the adjacent parking lot for vehicles with trailers and support
vehicles for the group site.

Fifteen Mile Creek Campground is adjacent to the confluence of Fifteen Mile
Creek and the Potomac River on the Maryland side. Tucked in the mountains of
Western Maryland and adjacent to Green Ridge State Forest, natural beauty is
plentiful all times of the year, but especially during autumn.

## Nearby Attractions

Greenridge State Forest and Billmeyer Wildlife Management Area are state
managed areas available for additional activities. This area is remote.

## Overview

Scouts built the Marsden Tract Group Campground to provide access to larger
campsites within easy commuting distance of the D.C. Metro area. It is located
at Mile 11.5 on the C&O; Canal Towpath, between the Carderock Recreation Area
and the historic Old Anglers Inn (private).

The group campsites are nestled in the woods between the Canal and the Potomac
River and they are a short distance from many recreational opportunities.
Fishing, rock climbing, paddling and hiking are but a few possibilities while
staying at Marsden Tract. **_Alcoholic beverages are prohibited._**

## Recreation

The most popular activity for Marsden Tract campers is hiking the three
sections (A, B and C) of the Billy Goat Trail, one of the most popular and
challenging rock hikes in the east. There are also many woodland trails for
beginners and experts alike. Fishing is also a popular pastime in both the
C&O; Canal and the Potomac River. Be sure to acquire a Maryland fishing
license for those age 16 or older. Virginia licenses are approved for fishing
in the Potomac only.

## Facilities

The campground has six group campsites; all will accommodate up to 30 campers
at each site. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring. **Potable
water is located a short walk up the towpath and across the footbridge heading
towards MacArthur Blvd (water may not be available during cold winter months).
Portable toilets are located near Campsite 1.**

**No vehicle traffic is allowed on the towpath and access to the campsites is
by foot only.**

Carderock Recreation Area or Angler's Inn are the two closest parking areas.
Each is a one-mile walk respectively. There are flush toilets located at the
Angler's parking area (temporarily closed). There is a temporary stopping area
on MacArthur Blvd near the intersection of Brickyard Rd. This area may be used
to off-load gear and be walked down the hill, however overnight parking in
this area is not permitted.

## Natural Features

Marsden Tract Group Campsite is just south of the Great Falls of the Potomac
and Mather Gorge. These two stunning features provide an excellent example of
local geology while showing the sheer force and power of nature.

The McCoys Ferry Campground is located at Mile 110.4 on the C&O; Canal
Towpath, between the towns of Big Pool and Big Spring on the Maryland side of
the Potomac River. The campsites are drive-in, large enough to park a very
small fifth wheel/travel trailer/RV/pop-out with a 20' ft. (6.1 m) maximum.
McCoys Ferry has a tunnel access which limits vehicle height to 10' 3" (3.12
m). **_Alcoholic beverages are prohibited._**

## Recreation

The most popular activities for McCoys Ferry campers is boating and fishing.
The campground has a boat ramp for easy access to the Potomac River for
kayakers and fisherman alike. Be sure to acquire a Maryland Fishing License
for those age 16 or older.

## Facilities

The campground has 12 single drive-in campsites. Each single will accommodate
up to eight people. Single campsites have a picnic table, fire ring and grill.
There is one group site available with space for two vehicles and a small
trailer or support vehicle less than 20 ft (6 m). The group site can
accommodate 30 people and has four picnic tables with grill and fire pit.
Protected pit toilets and accessible portable toilets are available. Potable
