After receiving seven to nine torpedo hits on the port (left) side, the USS Oklahoma capsized in roughly 20 minutes after the attack began. Over 400 men were trapped inside, of which only 32 were rescued.

The USS Utah lays where she fell on the north side of Ford Island. This decision was made in 1944 after several attempts at raising the ship failed. The quiet decision was made to leave the bodies of 58 crewmen onboard, considering them buried at sea.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial

Pearl Harbor NWR was established in 1972 as mitigation for construction of the
Honolulu International Airport Reef Runway. The Honouliuli and Waiawa Units
are managed under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Navy. The Kalaeloa
Unit, once part of the former Barber's Point Naval Air Station, was
established during military base closure proceedings in 2001 to protect native
plants. Through these cooperative efforts with the Federal Aviation
Administration, the State of Hawaiʻi, and the U.S. Navy; the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service made Pearl Harbor NWR a reality.

On the upper slopes of the northern Ko‘olau Mountains exist some of the last
remaining native intact forests on O‘ahu. In December 2000, thousands of acres
became part of the National Wildlife Refuge System to protect and recover
endangered, threatened, and other rare wildlife, and to protect native
biodiversity on the refuge.

O‘ahu Forest National Wildlife Refuge is home to the endangered pūpū kani oe
(O‘ahu tree snails); endangered plant species; and many native birds;
including the O‘ahu ‘elepaio, ‘i‘iwi, pueo, and native honeycreepers.
