Panoche Hills

Little Panoche Dam is a feature of the Central Valley Project - San Luis Unit.
The area is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access by foot only. Parking
lot provided. Nearest main highway, I-5. Nearest community, Los Banos (18
miles north of Dam). Birdwatching, sightseeing, picnicking, and nature study
allowed. Hunting of all game species in season. Fishing allowed in the pool.
Predominate species are black bass, bluegill, and white catfish.

Within the steep and rugged Griswold Canyon, BLM land straddles both sides of
the road. Visitor service improvements are now complete at the new day use
facility, which features a parking area, a shade structure, picnic benches, a
vault toilet, and a kiosk providing an interpretive panel, a map, and
information about the area.

Griswold Hills

## Overview

Look closely at the ground you will find evidence of the vast inland sea that
once covered the Tumey Hills. The light porous rocks are composed of diatoms,
the tiny, bleached, shell-like skeletons of sea algae. Annual grasslands are
lovely in springtime, with beautiful wildflower displays. Rarely seen
federally-protected San Joaquin kit fox, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, and giant
kangaroo rats make their homes in these hills. Visitors enjoy a day use
facility with parking, shade structures, picnic benches, vault toilets and an
interpretive kiosk with a map and information about the area.
