The Dewey Lake Campground Shoreline Sites is a primitive campground and the
only U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground at Dewey Lake. The campground is
open from April 20th - October 31st. There are two ways to access this

## Overview

Dewey Lake Shelters offer a day-use area on the shores of Dewey Lake in
eastern Kentucky. Located just west of the Appalachian Mountains, the lake
shore offers a peaceful, forested setting with plenty of outdoor recreation
opportunities for groups of up to 150 guests.

## Recreation

The picnic shelters are situated on an open, grassy area with plenty of space
for children to play. A hiking trail is located near picnic shelter 4. Fishing
is a popular activity from boats and the shoreline, and anglers will find
bass, crappie, brim, bluegill, catfish and muskie. Hunting is also allowed in
various wildlife management ares throughout the land surrounding the lake. For
area hunting maps please visit our Project Office. Dewey Lake Primitive
Campground is only accessible by boat or by a short hike (approximately 0.25
mi.) and contains 10 camping sites. Each of these sites are furnished with a
picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post Parking is available at the parking
lot on top of the dam, or the parking lot at Picnic Hollow. A water spigot is
available and portable restroom facilities. Electric hookups are not
available. Fees are $10 per night and paid through an honor vault system found
by the information board on the campground. This primitive campground is lake
front and will be open for use May 11, 2019 - October 5, 2019. Jenny Wiley
State Resort Park, which lines much of the western shore of the lake, has many
additional amenities and activities, such as off-road bicycling and hiking
trails and a marina with boat rentals and docking facilities. Here you may
also experience the secluded beauty of the 49-room May Lodge, which overlooks
Dewey Lake, surrounded by towering pines and peaceful mountains.

other large group events. All shelters have electric hookups and are near a
playground. Shelter 2 is also adjacent to a baseball field, and shelters 1 and
3 are closest to Dewey Dam Outflow Area. Shelter 4 is located at Picnic Hollow
at Dewey Dam. This location is adjacent to hiking trails, a small playground,
and restrrom facilities. We do not allow for continuous water/electric use
recreational activities such as powered bouncy houses or water slides.

above the water. The thick forests and calm water provide habitat for a
variety of animals, including bald eagles, black bear, elk, deer, osprey and
otters. Fall foliage displays brighten the lush green forests each fall.

offers a full range of features for visiotrs to utilize during their stay at
Dewey Lake. Amenities include a 49 room lodge, gift shop, swimming pool, 18

campground, hiking/biking trails and the Jenny Wiley Ampitheater. For

It was the first lake of its kind in our area and exemplies the power of partnerships through conservation and recreation efforts throughout the entire 12,166 acres of the project.

Horseback riders enjoy the fall mountain air during their ride at Dewey Lake.

German Bridge equestrian trails are nestled within Dewey Lake Wildlife Management Areas.  These horse riding trails are 18 miles of pathway located on the upper waters of Dewey Lake near the German Bridge Camp Ground.  Trails include benches and hitch post throughout the extensive trails.  These are picturesque mountain trail that often have a lake view.

Mountain biker enjoys the challenges within the Sugarcamp trail system.

Nestled deep within the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, the Sugarcamp Mountain Trail system is a multi-use (mountain biking, hiking, & horse) facility created through the joint effort by Jenny Wiley State Park and the city of Prestonburg. Sugarcamp includes roughly 6 miles of horse friendly, machine built trail which provides spectacular views of Dewey Lake and the surrounding area; as well as an additional 12 miles of hand-carved, technical singletrack dedicated to mountain biking and hiking. Trail difficulty varies (and is indicated at all trailheads), but at least an intermediate skillset is required to navigate all trails within the property.

Construction on Dewey Dam began in 1946, with lake impoundment in 1950.

The construction of Dewey Dam began in 1946.  The dam was composed of earth fill with an uncontrolled saddle spillway at 686 feet mean sea level (msl). the construction ended in 1949, and impounded (filled up) by 1950.

Dewey Lake with the conjunction on Jenny Wiley State Park and the City of Prestonsburg offer serveral outstanding hiking opportunities.  Trail difficulities varies (and is indicated at all trailheads).

Dewey Lake was the first of its kind in our area and exemplies the power of partnerships through conservation and recreation efforts throughout the entire 12,166 acres of the project.

On a lucky day you may spot the beautiful Bald Eagles that are sometimes seen at the lake.

Dewey Lake offers a variety of opportunities for animal-lovers to watch the wildlife in their natural habitiats.  You may just spot a deer, elk, turkey, osprey, otters, or even the beautiful Bald Eagles.

All four shelters have a little something unique to offer.  Shelter 1 is close to restrooms, play areas, horseshoe pits and a large baseball field. Shelter 2 is nicely shaded with excellent fishing access. Shelter 3 is perfect for parents to keep an eye on kids as they enjoy the large playground or basketball court. Shelter 4 will get you away from the large downstream crowd, is a short walk from a grand view of the dam, while also having a small play area.

The downstream area has 0.5miles of fishing access to the outflow of Dewey Lake (John's Creek). In here you'll find catfish, bluegill, sunfish, muskellunge, bass, and rainbow trout

Shelter #4 is the shelter that offers the most privacy, located before you get to the intake structure at our dam. This shelter features a playground area, benches, bathrooms, and provides direct access to our USACE hiking trail. Rent this shelter for a peaceful gathering with family and friends.

Shelter #1 is the first shelter that you encounter, located on the left, once you enter our downstream area. This shelter features a playground area on both sides and is located across the parking lot from our ball field. Stop by and enjoy a cookout/park day with your family and friends.

Dewey Lake Shelter #3, offers access to the most playground sets in our downstream area, which makes it a very popular pick when having events that include children.

Dewey Lake Shelter #2, is located in our downstream area, on the right after you pass Shelter #1. It is the most secluded out of all the shelters in our downstream area. If you enjoy fishing, then this is a great option for you, located closest to the stream for optimal access.

Dewey Lake Downstream Area. There are three shelters that are reservable and a few smaller shelters that are first come first serve. Stop by and reserve a shelter for your next family event at Dewey Lake. This is a great location for children and teens of all ages. They can take part in various activities such as playing on one of our many playgrounds, playing baseball or softball at our ball field, playing volleyball, fishing, and playing basketball.
