opportunities for wonderful views are nearly endless. Two access points offer
access into the heart of North Bank. At the Comstock Day-Use Area, a pavilion,
picnic tables, barbecue grill and vault toilet offers a superb venue for your
post-outing picnic.

  * West Entrance: Can accommodate 4-5 horse trailers or 10 vehicles, and has a small Informational kiosk.

mountain slopes across 984,602 acres of forest. The name, Umpqua, is a
surviving term of the Native American Umpqua language, and is believed to mean
"thundering waters," "across the waters" or "satisfied."

## Recreation

Hiking picnicking and relaxing are the primary activities at the campground.
In summer, swimming in the cool creek is a refreshing treat. In spring and
fall, salmon and steelheads come upriver to spawn.  
  
To protect valuable native runs of salmon and steelhead, Rock Creek is closed
to anglers. Instead, head to the North Umpqua River for abundant fishing
opportunities.  
  
A drive along the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway yields gorgeous views of mountain
peaksforested canyons and alpine lakes.

The campground is built on a loop with eleven separate sites. The volleyball
court and horseshoe pits are currently under construction. Use of a pavilion
and ballfield is allowed for campers and day-use recreationists parking in the
overflow area across Rock Creek Road.

Creek, which eventually flows into the North Umpqua River. Lone Pine

The flat grassy area is perfect for a casual game of soccer or a more special
occasion, like an outdoor wedding.  
  
In 1988 congress designated the North Umpqua River as a National Wild and
Scenic River, preserving and protecting it for outdoor enthusiasts. The river
is a tributary of the Umpqua River, which runs for over 200 miles from the
Cascade Range of southwestern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean.

Guests can play kickball, softball or other sports in the field that's
included in the pavilion reservation.  
  
Adjacent to the pavilion are horseshoe pits and a playground to entertain
young ones. From the pavilion, visitors can follow a 1-mile interpretive trail

Scenic River, preserving and protecting it for outdoor enthusiasts. The river

Cascade Range of southwestern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean.

Guests can play kickball, softball or other sports in the field that's on the
other side of day use parking area. Adjacent to the pavilion are horseshoe
pits and a playground to entertain young ones. From the pavilion, visitors can
follow a 1-mile interpretive trail that passes through the site of an old

the whole family to enjoy with a beach, picninc tables, and grills.

<p>Nestled along the clear waters of Rock Creek, Millpond’s lush forest gives way to spacious grassy areas, great for day-use and running the kids and dogs. A children's play area, a large ball-field, interpretive panels, and swimming areas are all available at Millpond. There is a short nature trail on the west end of the campground and the mile-long Sawmill Trail to the east. </p>
<p>In 1988 congress designated the North Umpqua River as a National Wild and Scenic River, preserving and protecting it for outdoor enthusiasts. The river is a tributary of the Umpqua River, which runs for over 200 miles from the Cascade Range of southwestern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean. </p>
<h2>Recreation</h2>
<p>Guests can play kickball, softball or other sports in the field that's on the other side of day use parking area.  Adjacent to the pavilion are horseshoe pits and a playground to entertain young ones. From the pavilion, visitors can follow a 1-mile interpretive trail that passes through the site of an old lumber mill.  Between the pavilion and campground there is a swimming hole for the whole family to enjoy with a beach, picninc tables, and grills.</p>

Well-developed trails on both the east and the west ends of the campground

In spring and fall, salmon and steelhead trout come upriver to spawn,
providing good fishing opportunities. Fishing on this stretch of the river is
limited to fly-fishing only. The river also attracts swimmers and whitewater
rafters and kayakers.

to amenities including multiple spigots for drinking water, flush restrooms,

viewing in the area includes deer, bald eagles, osprey and a herd of elk that
populates the region in the fall.

relaxation.  
  
Fishing, especially for steelhead and salmon, is very popular in the Umpqua

The Susan Creek Day-Use Area is a relaxing location where visitors can enjoy a
lunch break and observe the North Umpqua River, try fly-fishing in the waters
below, take a nature hike, or launch a raft or kayak on the North Umpqua
River. The site lies one-half mile downstream from Susan Creek Campground and
is connected by the Emerald Trail along the forested river bank. The trail
continues another 0.75 miles downstream, terminating at the pedestrian Tioga
Bridge where visitors can cross the mighty North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River.  
  
The day-use area also serves as a trailhead for the Susan Creek Falls Trail
which begins across Highway 138 from the parking lot. Susan Creek Falls is a
spectacular 50-foot waterfall which plummets over moss lined volcanic rock
cliffs and is located 0.8 mile up the trail from the Susan Creek Day-Use Area.

The Susan Creek Falls Trail was heavily impacted by the Archie Creek Fire in
2020. The trail is currently open, though not fully restored. Visitors should
be prepared for changing trail conditions depending on the time of year.

<p>The Susan Creek Day-Use Area is a relaxing location where visitors can enjoy a lunch break and observe the North Umpqua River, try fly-fishing in the waters below, take a nature hike, or launch a raft or kayak on the North Umpqua River. The site lies one-half mile downstream from Susan Creek Campground and is connected by the Emerald Trail along the forested river bank. The trail continues another 0.75 miles downstream, terminating at the pedestrian Tioga Bridge where visitors can cross the mighty North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River.<br><br>The day-use area also serves as a trailhead for the Susan Creek Falls Trail which begins across Highway 138 from the parking lot. China Ditch was a 33-mile project dug by 200 Chinese laborers in the 1890s to
supply water for gold mining operations. The China Ditch is over 100 years
old, but it is still clearly visible on the hillsides. A trip to the ditch can
help to re-live the history of the golden years of western mining. The BLM,
along with the Umpqua National Forest have set aside some 11 miles of the
ditch for preservation. The BLM maintains a 4000 foot section of the ditch as
a trail where the public can experience the history of Oregon's mining days.
The self-guided driving tour is yet another way of getting to know the history
of the China Ditch. Along the tour are informative signs that explain the
history of the ditch. Also, there are areas on the driving tour where
artifacts of the past are clearly visible, such as the hydraulic piping used
to transport water down the steep hillsides. At the end of the loop you reach
the town of Myrtle Creek. There, you can try your luck at panning in the
scenic and gold-laden South Umpqua River. The driving loop is accessible by
most vehicles depending on weather conditions. Be sure to have your camera in
hand, because there may be numerous wildlife photo opportunities.
