Welcome to the North Bank Habitat Management Area. North Bank offers visitors
the opportunity to hike, bike, and horseback ride on miles of roads and
trails. With hidden creeks, high ridgelines, oak-savannah woodlands, and
thickly forested canyons, the opportunities for wonderful views are nearly
endless. Two access points offer access into the heart of North Bank. At the
Comstock day-use area, a pavilion, picnic tables, barbecue grill and vault
toilet offers a superb venue for your post-outing picnic.

## Know Before You Go:

  * BLM-host on duty at main entrance.
  * The main entrance gate is open Friday through Monday, 8am to 8pm.
  * West Entrance: Can accommodate 4-5 horse trailers or 10 vehicles, and has a small Informational kiosk.
  * Comstock Day Use Area: Can accommodate 6-8 horse trailers and 8 vehicles.
  * There is no potable water at North Bank so be sure to bring your own.
  * North Bank is closed to all motorized use.
  * Hunting is a popular activity in the fall. Use caution if recreating this time of year.

Located at the western boundary of the 33.8 mile North Umpqua Wild & Scenic
River, Swiftwater Day-Use Area is a popular site to fish for steelhead, and
salmon. Deep fishing holes line the rock embankments under the Swiftwater
Bridge where anglers practice their skills and enjoy the day. A fishing
platform extends over the river to provide fishing access for those with
physical disabilities. Angling is allowed at Swiftwater, however, a few
hundred yards upriver (just above Rock Creek confluence), fishing is
restricted to fly-fishing only for the next 31 miles.

cedar trees, the swimming hole at the base of a six foot waterfall on Cavitt
Creeek is a welcome discovery on a hot day.

place at Cavitt Creek Recreation Site.

Trailhead. The 1.2 mile long Wolf Creek Falls trail follows a picturesque
stream through an old growth forest to a cascading two-tier waterfall. River

rock cliffs before plunging into deep pools.

Within a short drive from the campground you can have opportunities for day of
rafting on the North Umpqua, fishing, hiking, viewing waterfalls, or driving

sink, large grills, electrical outlets and a fireplace.  
  
The flat grassy area is perfect for a casual game of soccer or a more special
occasion, like an outdoor wedding.  
  
In 1988 congress designated the North Umpqua River as a National Wild and
Scenic River, preserving and protecting it for outdoor enthusiasts. The river
is a tributary of the Umpqua River, which runs for over 200 miles from the
Cascade Range of southwestern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean.

Guests can play kickball, softball or other sports in the field that's
included in the pavilion reservation.  
  
Adjacent to the pavilion are horseshoe pits and a playground to entertain

to spacious grassy areas, great for day-use and running the kids and dogs. A
children's play area, a large ball-field, interpretive panels, and swimming
areas are all available at Millpond. There is a short nature trail on the west
end of the campground and the mile-long Sawmill Trail to the east.

In 1988 congress designated the North Umpqua River as a National Wild and
Scenic River, preserving and protecting it for outdoor enthusiasts. The river
is a tributary of the Umpqua River, which runs for over 200 miles from the
Cascade Range of southwestern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean.

other side of day use parking area. Adjacent to the pavilion are horseshoe

the whole family to enjoy with a beach, picninc tables, and grills.

### Overview

The Susan Creek Day-Use Area is a relaxing location where visitors can enjoy a
lunch break and observe the North Umpqua River, try fly-fishing in the waters
below, take a nature hike, or launch a raft or kayak on the North Umpqua
River. The site lies one-half mile downstream from Susan Creek Campground and
is connected by the Emerald Trail along the forested river bank. The trail
continues another 0.75 miles downstream, terminating at the pedestrian Tioga
Bridge where visitors can cross the mighty North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River.  
  
The day-use area also serves as a trailhead for the Susan Creek Falls Trail
which begins across Highway 138 from the parking lot. Susan Creek Falls is a
spectacular 50-foot waterfall which plummets over moss lined volcanic rock
cliffs and is located 0.8 mile up the trail from the Susan Creek Day-Use Area.

### Know Before You Go:

  * The recreation site is for day-use only; nearby Susan Creek Campground is open seasonally.
  * Adjacent to the day-use area is the Susan Creek Raft Put-In / Take-Out accommodates river access for whitewater enthusiasts.
  * The upper portion of the Susan Creek Falls Trail beyond the falls has a natural abundance of poison oak and is a strenuous hike.
  * Angling on this stretch of the river is limited to fly-fishing only.
  * The North Umpqua is a class III whitewater river. It demands your attention.

Susan Creek Falls Trail and Day-Use Area

China Ditch was a 33-mile project dug by 200 Chinese laborers in the 1890's to
supply water for gold mining operations. The China Ditch is over one-hundred
years old, but it is still clearly visible on the hillsides. A trip to the
ditch can help to re-live the history of the golden years of western mining.
The BLM, along with the Umpqua National Forest have set aside some 11 miles of
the ditch for preservation. The BLM maintains a 4000 foot section of the ditch
as a trail where the public can experience the history of Oregon's mining
days. The self-guided driving tour is yet another way of getting to know the
history of the China Ditch. Along the tour are informative signs that explain
the history of the ditch. Also, there are areas on the driving tour where
artifacts of the past are clearly visible, such as the hydraulic piping used
to transport water down the steep hillsides. At the end of the loop you reach
the town of Myrtle Creek. There, you can try your luck at panning in the
scenic and gold-laden South Umpqua River. The driving loop is accessible by
most vehicles depending on weather conditions. Be sure to have your camera in
hand, because there may be numerous wildlife photo opportunities.
