Nefertiti Recreation Area

Tucked into the Book Cliffs in Carbon and Emery Counties west of Tavaputs
Plateau lies the Range Creek Valley. Within the canyon lie numerous well
preserved remains of the prehistoric Fremont Culture who lived in the area a
thousand years ago. The prehistoric habitation sites and rock art are subtle
and take a careful eye to notice.. Range Creek Canyon includes properties
managed by the BLM, SITLA, and private lands. Permits for access must be
obtained from the Utah DWR or the Natural History Museum of Utah to access the
non-BLM lands. Commercial tours are also available. In addition to the
archaeology also enjoy viewing wildlife, hiking, horseback riding, and
photography as well as spectacular canyon views. The BLM lands within the
canyon are part of a wilderness study area, which prevents mechanized travel
and lands managed by other agencies also prohibit vehicular travel.

The campground, tees and fairways are lined with mature cottonwood trees.

Green River State Park’s nine-hole golf course wraps around the shaded campground. The course offers enough challenge for experienced players and is friendly enough for beginners.

Like the Floy Canyon WSA immediately to the west, Coal Canyon WSA sits between
the face of the Bookcliffs and the top of the Roan Cliffs. It is a dissected
landscape of steep ridges and v-shaped canyons formed by many drainages
including Cottonwood, Sagers, Horse, Spring, Coal and Dry canyons. Vegetation
is predominantly pinyon-juniper woodland with high desert plant communities
along the southern portion of the WSA. Other vegetation includes Douglas fir,
sagebrush, riparian and mountain shrub. Erosional features of scenic interest
are pinnacles, balanced rocks, alcoves, overhangs, potholes, and arches. The
WSA has year-round populations of elk, mountain lion, black bear and Rocky
mountain bighorn sheep. The primary recreational use of the area is hunting.
Additional recreational opportunities in the WSA include hiking, horseback
riding, backpacking, camping and sightseeing. Portions of this WSA were burned
in a large fire in 2002; the area is currently revegetating.

Flat areas in the southern portion of the WSA are limited to canyon floors,
ledges, and narrow ridge tops. South of the cliffs, alternate layers of soft
and resistant rocks form a landscape of benches and slopes cut by canyons 100

At 290,845 acres, the Desolation Canyon Wilderness Study Area is the largest
WSA managed by BLM in the contiguous 48 states. The 84 mile segment of the
Green River through Desolation and Gray canyons is the most prominent
feature.The WSA has an extensive system of deep canyons. The canyon at Rock
Creek is more than 1 mile deep. The WSA contains arches, pinnacles, and other
erosional remnants not known to occur elsewhere in the Wasatch Formation in
similar concentrations or settings.Vegetation is diverse, ranging from desert
to high mountain types in a distance of only 5-10 miles.

Desolation Canyon WSA is located within the Price and Moab Field Offices. The
WSA includes lands along the Desolation and Gray Canyons of the Green River
and tributary drainages from the Tavaputs Plateau to the river. The 84 river
miles of the Green River is the WSA's major feature.

Commercial outfitters offer river trips from spring through fall. Reservations
for noncommercial private river trips may be obtained through an advance
lottery-type permit system (Contact BLM at the Price Field Office 435-636-3600

Elevations within the WSA vary by 5,600 feet. Vegetation types include:

There is a primitive boat ramp at Sand Wash, a primitive eight-site
campground, a contact/information station, staffed ranger station and vault
toilets. This remote site does not provide trash receptacles or water. Due to
the remoteness of the area, many groups camp the night here before their
launch on the river. Due to frequent mosquito plagues, Sand Wash offers four
campsites with screened cabins. Cabins are 12 feet by 16 feet, screen on all
four sides with a door and roof. There is a small table and bench inside.
Cabins are limited to one (1) per group launching. Please allow others the
ability to escape the bugs.

to a natural boat ramp for launching on the Green River. Cottonwood trees,
cliffs, sage brush, and greasewood dot the area. Cottonwood trees do provide

The Swaseys Beach campground and day use area allow for camping and picnicking
opportunities on the Green River across from Swaseys Boat Ramp. The beach and
many campsites are shaded with large cottonwoods. Both areas are often full on
summer weekends with recreationists floating the Green River Daily, swimming,
enjoying the beach, and camping.

## Recreation

Thousands of visitors float the Green River Daily each year, putting in at
Nefertiti Boat Ramp eight miles north of Swaseys Beach. Many more day users
find relaxation on the beach, picnicking, fishing, and swimming during the
warm summer months. While BLM rangers maintain the campground and patrol the
river, there are no lifeguards, and visitors are responsible for their safety.
**Campfires are only allowed in fire rings. Please do not build fires on the
beach**.
