## Overview

The campground includes 13 sites total, each of which can accommodate tent
campers or RVs. **Due to the size of the campground, there is a length limit
of 26 feet combined.** The campground is open year-round and is typically
busiest from mid-March to mid-June. Visitation also spikes in the late fall,
between September and October. The campground tends to fill up quickly during
these busy periods.

The Natural Bridges National Monument Campground is located approximately 35
miles West of Blanding, UT, nestled in the heart of Bears Ears National
Monument. Situated in a high-desert environment at 6,500 feet above sea level,
the campground is surrounded by a sprawling pinon-juniper forest. The
elevation can also be cause for dramatic temperature fluctuations.
Temperatures can reach highs of 100 degrees Fahrenheit mid-Summer and can dip
below freezing in the Winter.

Length of stay is limited to seven (7) nights (consecutively or non-
consecutively) in any 30-day period or a total of 14 nights per year.

## Recreation

Natural Bridges National Monument is home to three of the largest natural
bridges in the United States. The bridges can be viewed from three overlooks
situated along the nine-mile loop drive through the park. The overlooks are
each paved and located less than one-quarter mile from the parking areas.
Hiking trails to the bridges themselves are also available. Descend into White
or Armstrong canyons and wind along the wash to view the bridges from below.
The hiking routes along the canyon bottom are unmaintained and may experience
small changes depending on weather.

Visitors may also encounter archeological sites in the area. When visiting
archeological sites, structures, pictographs, petroglyphs, or delicate rock
formations, please visit with respect. Stop by the visitor center and ask a
ranger about the "Dos and Don'ts" of visiting these areas. Natural Bridges
also boasts an incredible night sky as the world’s first International Dark
Sky Park. Night-sky programming may be available in the spring and fall,
dependent on staffing levels.

## Facilities

Each campsite is complete with a picnic table, at least one tent pad, and a
metal fire ring. There are two pit toilets situated in the campground as well.
The campground does not provide water, showers, flushing toilets, RV hookups,
or a dump station. Drinking water is available at the visitor center, with a
limit of five gallons per person, per day. Due to the very tight campground
loop, the **maximum RV length permitted in this campground is 26 feet
combined** \--anything larger will not able to navigate the campground loop
road. There is also a maximum limit of eight people per campsite, two tents
per site, and two vehicles per site (trailers count as a separate vehicle).
Fires must stay in the provided metal fire ring. There is no cell service in
the campground, but public Wi-Fi is available at the visitor center.

Salvation Knoll is a historic site located a few miles off the Hole-in-the-
Rock Trail on Cedar Mesa. This trail was blazed by Mormon pioneers during the
winter of 1879-1880 as they came to settle along the San Juan River. Scouts
exploring in advance of the wagon train through the terribly rugged terrain
became lost and ran out of food as they sought to determine whether the route
was even possible. On a snowy Christmas Day morning in 1879, they climbed what
is now known as Salvation Knoll in search of landmarks. From its top they were
able to see the Blue Mountains off to the northeast, which allowed them to
orient themselves. Subsequently they were able to design a route for the wagon
trail that followed them. Today, a hiking trail accesses the top of Salvation
Knoll, where visitors can enjoy a 360 degree panorama of incredible views.
Round trip to the top is one-half mile.

eastern edge the mesa's caprock dips sharply downward toward Comb Wash. Many
canyons cut through this area. Other attractions include the scenery and
wildlife, as well as the solitude of desert canyons.

gradually descends for four miles to the junction with Grand Gulch. At this
intersection, you can view a cliff dwelling called Junction Ruin. If you
decide to continue, in the next mile you can see Turkey Pen Ruin and Stimper
Arch. From Kane Gulch Ranger Station to Stimper Arch is 10 miles round trip.

classic western landscape with panoramic vistas, towering sandstone cliffs and
spires, and rolling grasslands.

head of the North Fork of Mule Canyon, trend southeast. The walls of the
canyon are alternating layers of red and white sandstone. The canyons cut into

known Ancestral Puebloan dweller sites within the WSA, most of which are cliff
dwellings. These picturesque ancient structures add elements of discovery and

Slickhorn Canyon on Cedar Mesa is a canyon of many shapes and colors twisted
and carved in eroded reds, browns, and yellows. It is an impressive canyon
with sandstone walls varying in height from 300 feet in the north end to 800
feet as the canyon approaches the San Juan River. Hiking in this canyon is
rugged. The creek channel is frequently clogged with boulders, and there are
many pour offs and steep talus slopes to be negotiated, challenging even the
experienced hiker. A permit to hike or backpack is required.

Collins Canyon

The North and South Forks of Mule Canyon are two fairly easy hiking areas on
Cedar Mesa, north of U.S. Highway 95. The two canyons run roughly parallel to
each other. They are similar in appearance, being relatively shallow at the
trailhead near the road, and gradually deepening as they wind toward the west.
Alternating band of red and white sandstone typify the canyon walls, which
become increasingly sheer at the upper ends of the forks. Although there is no
constructed, maintained trail, the route follows the creek bottom and a
commonly used foot path. Boulders and evergreen trees crowd the canyon bottoms
in the upper ends, while the lower stretches are wider and more open. The hike
is in the canyon bottom and only gains a few hundred feet over the course of
seven miles. A permit to hike or backpack is required.

somewhat and contain numerous rock fins, alcoves, pinnacles, step-like pour
offs on the canyon floors, and impressive natural arches. The canyons widen
and become more shallow at the southern end of the WSA. Approximately 60
percent (28,000 acres) of the WSA is rated as outstanding for scenic quality.
Fish Creek WSA includes land extensively occupied by Ancestral Puebloan
dwellers from about200 A.D. to 1300 A.D. The Hole in the Rock Trail, the route
followed by the Mormon settlers in 1879 to 1880, forms most of this unit's
southern boundary.

The pioneers camped at Snow Flat Spring Cave and built The Twist, a narrow
twisting road through the rocks from the mesa down to the Comb Wash area.

elevation in the upper ends of Road Canyon begins at approximately 6,200 feet
and drops to 4,900 feet at the lower ends. The walls of the canyon vary from
100 feet in the upper ends to over 500 feet in the lower ends. Erosion of the
colorful Cedar Mesa Sandstone has created a layer cake effect of multiple
tiers, especially in the middle and lower sections of the canyon. There are
numerous archaeological sites present. Please take care when visiting these
fragile sites. There are no maintained trails. Routes generally follow the
mostly dry creek bed. There are long stretches of slickrock, with several
pour-offs to negotiate. The canyon bottom is not as luch as some of the other
Cedar Mesa canyons, and shade is at a minimum. A permit to hike or backpack is
required.
