Bears Ears National Monument

Cedar Mesa is a popular area for hiking and backpacking to see Ancestral
Puebloan cliff ruins and rock art in a natural setting. Many miles of
spectacular canyons lined with cliffs cut across the mesa. Some ruins are
amazingly inaccessible, perched high on ledges and under overhangs. On its
eastern edge the mesa's caprock dips sharply downward toward Comb Wash. Many
canyons cut through this area. Other attractions include the scenery and
wildlife, as well as the solitude of desert canyons.

Cedar Mesa is a popular area for hiking and backpacking to see Ancestral Puebloan cliff ruins and rock art in a natural setting. Ridge, and Arch Canyon. The deep canyons and towering mesas of the Shash Jáa
SRMA contain abundant cultural resources, including rock writing, remains of
single-family dwellings, granaries, kivas, and towers primarily from the
Pueblo II and III periods, along with sites from the Basketmaker and Archaic
periods. Popular recreation activities include hiking, backpacking, off-
highway vehicle (OHV) touring on designated routes, scenic driving, dispersed
camping, and photography.

The Shash Jáa Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) of Bears Ears National Monument is home to outstanding cultural, natural, and recreational resources. is now known as Salvation Knoll in search of landmarks. From its top they were
able to see the Blue Mountains off to the northeast, which allowed them to
orient themselves. Subsequently they were able to design a route for the wagon
trail that followed them. Today, a hiking trail accesses the top of Salvation
Knoll, where visitors can enjoy a 360 degree panorama of incredible views.
Round trip to the top is one-half mile.

The campground includes 13 sites total, each of which can accommodate tent
campers or RVs. **Due to the size of the campground, there is a length limit
of 26 feet combined.** The campground is open year-round and is typically
busiest from mid-March to mid-June. Visitation also spikes in the late fall,
between September and October. The campground tends to fill up quickly during
these busy periods.

The Natural Bridges National Monument Campground is located approximately 35
miles West of Blanding, UT, nestled in the heart of Bears Ears National
Monument. Situated in a high-desert environment at 6,500 feet above sea level,
the campground is surrounded by a sprawling pinon-juniper forest. The
elevation can also be cause for dramatic temperature fluctuations.
Temperatures can reach highs of 100 degrees Fahrenheit mid-Summer and can dip
below freezing in the Winter.

## Recreation

Natural Bridges National Monument is home to three of the largest natural
bridges in the United States. The bridges can be viewed from three overlooks
situated along the nine-mile loop drive through the park. The overlooks are
each paved and located less than one-quarter mile from the parking areas.
Hiking trails to the bridges themselves are also available. Descend into White
or Armstrong canyons and wind along the wash to view the bridges from below.
The hiking routes along the canyon bottom are unmaintained and may experience
small changes depending on weather.

Visitors may also encounter archeological sites in the area. When visiting
archeological sites, structures, pictographs, petroglyphs, or delicate rock

an abundance of living biological soil crust surrounds the campground. Views

beautiful pinon pine and juniper forest, which provides ample privacy between
sites without obstructing the view of wide-open skies. These vast and
unpolluted skies make Natural Bridges a wonderful place to stargaze.

<p>The campground includes 13 sites total, each of which can accommodate tent campers or RVs. <strong>Due to the size of the campground, there is a length limit of 26 feet combined. </strong>The campground is open year-round and is typically busiest from mid-March to mid-June. Visitation also spikes in the late fall, between September and October. The campground tends to fill up quickly during these busy periods. </p>
<p>The Natural Bridges National Monument Campground is located approximately 35 miles West of Blanding, UT, nestled in the heart of Bears Ears National Monument. Situated in a high-desert environment at 6,500 feet above sea level, the campground is surrounded by a sprawling pinon-juniper forest.  The elevation can also be cause for dramatic temperature fluctuations.  Temperatures can reach highs of 100 degrees Fahrenheit mid-Summer and can dip below freezing in the Winter.  </p>

mile, moderately difficult hike leads to the junction with Grand Gulch. Grand
Gulch is a popular area for hiking and backpacking to see Ancestral Puebloan
cliff ruins and rock art in a natural setting. Grand Gulch and its tributaries
feature miles of winding canyons lined with cliffs that provided sheltered
overhangs to people in the past. Some ruins are amazingly inaccessible,
perched high on ledges and under overhangs. Other attractions include the
scenery and wildlife, as well as the solitude of desert canyons. A permit to
hike or backpack is required.

and carved in eroded reds, browns, and yellows. It is an impressive canyon
with sandstone walls varying in height from 300 feet in the north end to 800
feet as the canyon approaches the San Juan River. Hiking in this canyon is
rugged. The creek channel is frequently clogged with boulders, and there are
many pour offs and steep talus slopes to be negotiated, challenging even the
experienced hiker. A permit to hike or backpack is required.

Utah's Road to Mighty and the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway, especially
when combined with nearby Hovenweep National Monument, Cedar Mesa cliff
dwellings and Natural Bridges National Monument.
