A small primitive campground located approximately 14 miles northeast of
Elkins, West Virginia, on Forest Road 91 (Stuart Drive) near the Otter Creek
Wilderness. 8 available sites are nestled along rock outcroppings that offer
unique landscapes.

There is stream fishing and hiking located nearby. Middle Point Trail #140,
3.7 miles in length is located along Forest Road 91 (Stuart Drive) west of the
Campground. The Otter Creek Wilderness offers several trails and more
challenging experiences just next door.

## Overview

**Big Bend** is located in the Smoke Hole Canyon Smoke Hole Canyon next to the
South Branch of the Potomac River at the end of County Route 2. Located 10

from campground and is open for fishing and non-motorized boat use. A one mile
loop trail is available for hiking at the campground and 60 miles of
backcountry trails are located close by in the Seneca Creek Backcountry as
well as the trails located in Smoke Hole Canyon.

Big Bend Campground is comprised of 46 standard non-electric camping units
with fire rings, lantern posts, picnic tables and paved spurs. In addition,
there is a developed host site equipped with electrical, water, and sewage
hookups. Parts of the campground and facilities within it are ABA accessible.

The campground contains two single-unit vault toilets, two double-unit flush
toilets, and a four-unit flush restroom with four showers some of which are

There are trash dumpsters located in each loop of the campground for garbage
collection and disposal.

There is one recreation vehicle dump station in Big Bend Campground located
adjacent to the campground. Visitors staying at Jess Judy Group Campground may
use the dump station at Big Bend Campground. There is an underground holding
tank attached to the dump station. Holder is responsible for daily operations

The average operation and maintenance season for Big Bend Campground and Jess
Judy Group Campground has been from approximately April 10th through Oct 31st.
At a minimum, the Forest Service (FS) will expect the permit Holder to fully
operate the campgrounds from the second Friday night in April through the last

Jess Judy Group Campground may obtain water at Big Bend Campground. The group
campground is not accessible.

There are trash dumpsters located in each loop of the campground for garbage
collection and disposal.

There is one recreation vehicle dump station in Big Bend Campground located
adjacent to the campground. Visitors staying at Jess Judy Group Campground may
use the dump station at Big Bend Campground. There is an underground holding

Blue Bend Recreation Area is a quaint wooded area filled with plenty of
hiking, picnicking and camping opportunities. Constructed in the 1930s by the
Civilian Conservation Corps, the rustic wood tables and shelters appeal to
many day and overnight visitors.  
  
The recreation area, along Anthony Creek, has a selection of single family
campsites and 2 picnic shelters. The large group picnic shelter accommodates
75 people and can be reserved in peak season.

Swimming is nice and refreshing in Anthony Creek, and anglers can find trout
here. The Blue Bend Recreation Area provides access to the BIg Draft
WIlderness. A popular excursion into the wilderness is the 5-mile Blue Bend
Loop Trail, which connects to the Anthony Creek Trail. Blue Bend Loop Trail
offers 3 scenic overlooks.

Flush toilets and showers are available in summer, and vault toilets can be

Anthony Creek attracts anglers looking for trout. The "Blue Hole" in the creek
is a favorite spot for swimming. Nearby Big Draft Wilderness provides an
opportunity to explore more remote areas of teh Forest. Anthony Creek Trail
follows the creek in a narrow valley filled with rhododendron and many
flowering forest trees. Blue Bend Loop Trail offers 3 scenic overlooks. Both
trails are recommended for hikers and bird watchers.

junction of Route 150 and Route 39/55, 16 miles from Marlinton and 22 miles
from Richwood, is a perfect site to plan a family gathering. The picnic
shelter is located on the grounds of the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center
which is fun for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. The nature center
includes an exhibit hall, auditorium, events and programs. The center also
features a native plant garden, a nature trail, and many activities for
children.

The picnic shelter can accommodate 50 people, has electricity, and an
accessible pathway from the parking area to the shelter. A charcoal grill,
picnic tables, and trash receptacle are all provided.

historic background. The Hopkins Mountain Fireman’s Cabin and Fire Tower site
were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1935. Also on the
property is a logging tramway, in use from about 1908 to the 1920s, and the
Civil War Trail, used in 1863 for the rapid retreat of the 64th Virginia
Battalion after the Battle of Droop Mountain. The fireman’s residence,
measures 14 feet by 20 feet and has been virtually unaltered since
construction.

campground although persons camping at Jess Judy Group Campground may obtain
water at Big Bend Campground. The group campground is not accessible.  
About 1.3 million visitors come to the Monongahela National Forest each year,
and it's no surprise why. The forest is a drivable distance from cities like
Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh, yet the density of flora, fauna and
picturesque mountains seem like a world away from any city.

## Recreation

Visitors enjoy canoeing and fishing on the river, and hiking on local trails.
Thirty miles of maintained trails can be found nearby and mountain biking is
permitted on most of them. One highly recommended trail for hikers and
backpackers is the North Fork Mountain Trail.

Lake Sherwood Recreation Area is a complete family destination offering a wide
variety of activities and camping options. Standard, tent-only and group
camping facilities are perched along Lake Sherwood, the largest lake in the
Monongahela National Forest.  
  
Swimming beaches, a picnic area, boat ramp and several hiking trails are among
the features of the area.

## Recreation

Anglers seek tiger muskie, channel catfish, bullhead, bluegill and largemouth
bass. Boating is a big draw as well.  
  
Hikers have the option of exploring Lake Sherwood Trail, Upper Meadow Trail,
Meadow Mountain Trail and Meadow Creek.

## Overview

The Middle Mountain Cabins are nestled in a small grassy opening near a small
pond and Camp Five Run, a hiking trail that leads into the Laurel Fork South
Wilderness. The cabins are secluded and offer a quiet retreat for visitors.
Rented as a single unit, Middle Mountain Cabins include a main cabin with a
kitchen, and two historic sleeping cabins.  
  
The cabins occupy a 3.5-acre space about 18 miles south of Wymer. The two
smaller cabins were built in 1939 and served as bunk houses for Forest Service
employees.

## Recreation

Middle Mountain Cabins (elevation 3,750 feet) are located on a half-acre
grassy field surrounded by red spruce and yellow birch. The cabins sit near
the Laurel Fork South Wilderness. Several other trails around the Middle
Mountain Cabins include the High Falls of Cheat Trail # 345, which is a
2.9-mile trek to the beautiful waterfalls.  
  
The West Fork Rail Trail #312 is an old railroad grade and runs along the West
Fork of the Greenbrier River. The Allegheny Trial # 701 spans many districts
on the Monongahela National Forest.  
  
Fishing is popular on the Cheat, Glady Fork, Shavers Fork, and West and East
Forks of the Greenbrier River. Lake fishing is popular at Spruce Knob Lake and
Buffalo Lake. A state fishing license, National Forest Stamp, a Conservation
stamp, and a trout stamp are required.

## Facilities

The main cabin is a single story log building with a gabled roof that extends
to cover a full length porch. Inside are exposed log rafters and tie beams.
Outside there is a picnic table, grill and campfire ring. A four car gravel
parking area is located beside the grassy clearing.  
  
All cabins have fireplaces. Firewood is provided, but the supply is not
guaranteed. There is no water in the cabin, but an outside handpump for
drinking water is available. An outdoor vault toilet is located onsite. Each
sleeping cabin contains two sets of bunk beds, while the main cabin contains
one full size bed for a total capacity of 10 people.  
  
The kitchen includes a gas stove, cabinets, a table with six chairs, two
lounge chairs, some pots, pans, dishes and silverware. There is no electricity
available. Visitors should bring food, matches or a lighter, an ax, small saw,
bedding, lanterns for each cabin, flashlights, food, ice chests, and personal
gear. Food should be protected as field mice and bears frequent the area.

Red Oak Fire Lookout is approximately 12 miles south of Cowen, West Virginia.
It sits at an elevation of 3,704 feet. Guests enjoy the area for its
magnificent views, wildlife viewing and historic background. The original Red
Oak Fire Tower in Webster County was erected using Civilian Conservation Corps
labor in 1934. It was a wooden framed structure with a wooden cab. In 1964 it
was replaced by the current metal structure, which was an improved design of
the time period. Like all of the fire towers on Forest, it was retired by the
late 1970s. The tower still stands and is in good condition and is now used as
a recreational opportunity.

## Recreation

The site is an ideal location for birdwatching, hunting, gravel bike riding,
and stargazing. Other activities that require a short driver are hiking and
biking trails and fishing.

## Facilities

The tower cab has lights and an electric outlet. There is a vault toilet
onsite. The campsite has a 50 and 30 amp service for RVs. There are picnic
tables, a combination fire ring/grill, and lantern post at the site.

## Natural Features

The site is located in a portion of the Forest with active management. Timber
activities provide wildlife with a diverse habitat. The Cranberry and Williams
Rivers are nearby, providing fishing opportunities for both native and stocked
trout.

mountains on both the east and west. Hiking and nature study at Seneca Rocks
are just a couple of the popular activities in the area. The North Fork South
Branch Potomac River is nearby, making fishing a popular pastime. Seneca
Shadows Campground is comprised of 11 standard camping units with electric
hookups, 2 double camping units with electric hookups, 23 standard camping
units without electric, 2 double camping units without electric, 40 walk-in
camp sites and 3 group tent sites with drinking water, fire rings, lantern
posts, picnic tables and paved spurs (standard camping units). In addition,
there are two developed host sites equipped with electrical, water, and sewage
hookups as well as an outdoor amphitheater that features lighting, sound
equipment, and seating.

The campground contains two four-toilet vault restrooms, one double-toilet
vault restroom, and four multiple-toilet flush restrooms with showers. There
are trash dumpsters located throughout Seneca Shadows Campground for garbage
collection and disposal.

There is one recreation vehicle dump station in the recreation area located
adjacent to the host site in the campground.

The average operation and maintenance season for Seneca Shadows Campground has
been from approximately April 10th through Oct 31st. At a minimum, the Forest
Service (FS) will expect the permit Holder to fully operate the campground
from the second Friday night in April through the last Saturday night in
October.

Two local caves beckon ambitious explorers, and the 900-foot high Seneca Rocks
can be viewed from most campsites.

**The Spruce Knob Lake Campground** is tucked in a beautiful hardwood forest
less than a mile from Spruce Knob Lake. The campground provides a peaceful
setting with easy access to boating on the lake and hiking through the
mountainous region. Spruce Knob Lake Campground is comprised of 28 standard
camping units, 2 double camping units, and 10 walk in camping units with fire
rings, lantern posts, picnic tables and paved spurs (standard camping units).
In addition, there is a developed host site equipped with electrical (solar),
water, and a sewage holding tank.

Spruce Knob Lake Campground contains five single-toilet vault restrooms all of
which are accessible.

Gatewood Group Campground contains 1 reservable site that can accommodate up
to approximately 30 people. The campground contains fire rings, picnic tables,
and two single-toilet vault restrooms. There is no electric or drinking water
at the group campground. The group campground is not ABA accessible.

There are trash dumpsters located at Spruce Knob Lake Campground and there are
trash bins located at Gatewood Group Campground for garbage collection and
disposal.

There are no dump stations in either campground.

The average operation and maintenance season for Spruce Knob Lake Campground
and Gatewood Group Campground has been from approximately mid-April through
mid-October. At a minimum, the Forest Service (FS) will expect the permit
Holder to fully operate the campground from the third Friday night in April
through the Columbus Day weekend in October.  
Spruce Knob is the highest peak in West Virginia. A stone and steel
observation tower is perched atop the peak, offering breathtaking 360-degree
views of the area.

## Recreation

Sixty miles of picturesque hiking trails crisscross the region, and the
campground provides direct access to the pleasant 1-mile Big Bend River Loop.  
  
Trout fishing is available nearby at 25-acre Spruce Knob Lake, and in
surrounding creeks. Facilities at the lake include a small boat ramp, parking
area and vault toilets. A wooden pier along the shoreline provides barrier-
free access to the lake.No swimming is allowed.

The campground has accessible vault toilets and a solar-powered system for
drinking water. No electric hookups are available. Firewood is for sale on-
site.

The campground provides a peaceful setting with easy access to boating on the lake and hiking through the mountainous region. Spruce Knob Lake Campground is comprised of 28 standard camping units, 2 double camping units, and 10 walk in camping units with fire rings, lantern posts, picnic tables and paved spurs (standard camping units). In addition, there is a developed host site equipped with electrical (solar), water, and a sewage holding tank.</p>
<p>Spruce Knob Lake Campground contains five single-toilet vault restrooms all of which are accessible.</p>
<p>Gatewood Group Campground contains 1 reservable site that can accommodate up to approximately 30 people. The campground contains fire rings, picnic tables, and two single-toilet vault restrooms. There is no electric or drinking water at the group campground. The group campground is not ABA accessible.</p>
<p>There are trash dumpsters located at Spruce Knob Lake Campground and there are trash bins located at Gatewood Group Campground for garbage collection and disposal.</p>

**The Stuart Campground and Recreation Area** is set in a mixed forest along
the banks of the Shavers Fork River. The river provides excellent fishing and
is regularly stocked with trout. Hiking trails lead to outstanding overlooks,
local caves and Blackwater Falls. It is comprised of one campground, one group
campground and a day-use area. The campground has 26 (25 single, 1 double)
camping units with electric hookups, fire rings, lantern posts, picnic tables
and paved spurs. In addition, there is a developed host site equipped with
electrical, water, and sewage hookups. Most of the campground sites and
facilities within it are ABA accessible.

The campground contains two single-unit vault toilets, one double-unit vault
toilet, and one six-unit flush restroom with four shower units all of which
are accessible.

The group campground contains one reservable site that will accommodate up to
40 people. The group campground contains fire rings, picnic tables, lantern
posts, and two single-unit vault toilets. There is no electric at the group
campground. Drinking water may be obtained from Stuart Campground. The group
campground is not accessible.

The day-use area contains three reservable pavilions. The “Large” Pavilion has
electricity and can accommodate 100 people. There are two non-electric
pavilions: the “Small” Pavilion is non-electric and can accommodate 50 people;
the “Alpena” Pavilion is non-electric and can accommodate 25 people. The day
use area also contains 5 separate vehicle parking areas, with space for
approximately 25-40 vehicles in each lot, a 14 acre field (approximately),
multiple picnic tables, multiple pedestal grills, four restroom facilities
with two toilets in each restroom (two changing rooms located at one of the
restrooms), a river-beach area, easy stream access to Shavers Fork of Cheat
River, and volleyball net. The restrooms, changing areas, parking areas, Large
and Small Pavilions are accessible. The entire 14 acre field (approximately)
must be mowed and trimmed. Holder will be responsible for all grounds
maintenance of the site and facilities.

New for the 2025 season the day-use area also contains a historic cabin that
was previously managed under the local Forest Service district office for
storage and administrative use. It was recently fully renovated and has been
added to this prospectus for future use as a rental. The cabin contains a
fully furnished kitchen (overhead cabinets, refrigerator, oven/range, sink,
and countertops with drawers underneath), a single full-bathroom (with
standing shower, toilet, and sink), a study room with two desks, a living room
(with two couches, and end tables), a second living/dining space (with table,
chairs and benches), and two furnished bedrooms (with two single beds, night
stands, standing closets, and lamps in each room – 4 beds total). The cabin
has electric heat, public water, and the sewer is tied into the on-site
wastewater system. The cabin does not have air conditioning. Permit holder
will be responsible for adding the cabin to the reservation system. Similar to
all the other sites listed in this prospectus, the permit holder will be
responsible for all daily upkeep of the cabin, check-in/check-out, as well as
repair and replacement of consumables within the cabin. Due to the cabin being
on the National Register of Historic Places, any proposed alterations/repairs
to the cabin and the adjacent landscaping by the permit holder must be
reviewed and approved by the Forest Supervisor in conjunction with
consultation with the Forest Service Archaeologist and the State’s Historic
Preservation Office (SHPO) prior to implementation. Applicants must consider
the cost of cabin maintenance, upkeep, and cleaning as part of their business
operations when calculating operating costs. Applicants must include a
proposed nightly fee for the cabin within the fee structure portion of the
application.

popular 43-acre cold water fishing lake. Although the campground closes in
winter, the lake is accessible year-round. Summit Lake was constructed in 956
as a reservoir for the town of Richwood, WV. It is fed by the two forks of
Coats Run, a tributary of the North Fork of the Cherry River. The area has a
rich history dating back to Native Americans, the lumber boom of the early
1900s and its current era of land preservation and use.

## Recreation

Fishing for stocked trout is the most popular activity at Summit Lake in
addtion to canoeing and kayaking. When conditions allow, hardy anglers ice
fish the lake. A 1.8 mile trail around the lake offers shoreline access to the
lake as well as wildlife viewing opportunities. The Cranberry Wilderness, the
Cranberry Glades, Falls of Hills Creek, and the Cranberry Mountain Nature
Center are all within a short drive or day bike ride.
