Mojave preserves a diverse mosaic of ecological habitats and a 10,000 year history of human connection with the desert. Offering extensive opportunities to experience desert landscapes, the preserve promotes understanding and appreciation for the increasingly threatened resources of the Mojave Desert. This remote preserve encourages a sense of discovery and a connection to wild places.

Directions

Note: There is no fuel inside the Preserve. Please fill up with gas BEFORE you enter. Park headquarters in Barstow, California is 60 miles from the Preserve, and offers maps and information. Our main visitor center, Kelso Depot, is located inside the Preserve, 95 miles east of Barstow and 90 miles west of Las Vegas at the intersection of Kelso-Cima and Kelbaker Roads. Kelso Depot is currently closed for renovations.

This is a peaceful place to have a great sunset view and dry camp when it isn’t too hot, for an RV. Just need to have rangers check quiet hours more…cars coming in after 11pm and burning fires when high wind.

Beautiful campsite with wonderful weather, even in the summer. We were the only ones at the site and everything was clean and tidy. Lots of wildlife! No scorpions that we could find but lots of kangaroo mice and tarantulas! Reception was spotty (as to be expected). Check the weather before coming for high winds or rain storms as there is really no shade and the terrain makes it difficult to stake down tents.

Family enjoyed our night at Hole-in the Wall Campground. While we were there it was hot as our stay was late June. The breeze was consistent; the night sky was amazing with no lights around us. Be sure to check the map on the way in. Our GPS sent us the "shortest" rout which meant more unpaved roads. We could have enter a few miles later and been on much better roads. I would do that again even in the heat.

Summer temperatures in the day were around 100F, but as soon as the sun set it quickly cooled off. It was a very pleasant visit in June.
