In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women,
and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military-style
camps. Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where the US
government incarcerated Japanese immigrants ineligible for citizenship and

This is an 8.5-mile unmaintained trail that begins at an elevation of 3,900
feet. It climbs steep, exposed switchbacks and becomes harder to follow as it
continues. After 5.5 miles, the trail crosses the crest of the Inyo Mountains
at 9,600 feet and enters the Inyo National Forest. From there, it descends the
eastern side of the mountains through a fork of Pat Keyes Canyon to about

Where Can I Use the Restroom?

    

To control human waste, six porta potties have been placed in the Alabama
Hills. Please either use these restrooms or pack out your solid human waste
using a portable waste system (RV toilet, wag bag, portable toilet, etc.).

The porta potties are located at the Mobius Arch trailhead and across from the
Shark Fin parking area.

How Can I Have a Campfire?

    

Check for current restrictions that may be in place.

California campfire permit are required on BLM managed lands within

One group site is available for $35.00 per night. The group camping area is
approximately the size of four sites combined, with six picnic tables and four
fire pits. Tent camping will accommodate up to 15 people comfortably. RV and
trailer space within the group site is limited to approximately four. Adjacent
sites may be rented upon arrival. Please call for group site reservations

Two horse corrals are available for $12.00 per night, including the associated
site. Weed-free hay is required. Reservations accepted.

Within the campgrounds, all motor vehicles must adhere to the 10 mph speed
limit. No motor vehicle shall exceed 15 mph within 50 feet of any campground,
campsite, or concentration of people or animals.

The Alabama Hills are uniquely weathered granitic boulders at the foot of the High Sierra's near Mount Whitney.

## Overview

The north-south Inyo Mountains comprise a high and vast desert range, and the
isolated and pristine Wilderness that bears their name encompasses a large
portion of this sheerly rugged terrain. The area reaches a high point on
Keynot Peak, at about 11,000 feet, and separates the Owens Valley on the west
from the Saline Valley on the east. Most of the eastern border is shared with
Death Valley National Park. Year-round streams, some cascading over
waterfalls, can be found in eight canyons on the rough east side. These steep-
walled canyons offer challenges to rock climbers.

In addition to Keynot Peak, the prominent summits of New York Butte and Mount
Inyo provide tough, nontechnical hikes with splendid views as rewards.
Creosote, shadscale scrub, and sagebrush proliferate at lower elevations.
You'll find a lush riparian habitat in the moist canyons, and pinion-juniper
woodlands on some of the slopes. Bristlecone and limber pine grow in the
higher reaches. Inyo Mountains Wilderness lies partly on BLM land and partly
within Inyo National Forest.

A rich mining legacy has left a smattering of ruins to explore, and the towers
that supported a men-and-salt-bearing tram from the Saline Valley salt mines
to Owens Lake can still be seen on Cerro Gordo Peak.

There are 103 miles of unmaintained trails, often difficult to follow, a
holdover from historic use. Most of these trails are not shown on maps. From
Reward, the old Lonesome Miner Trail (40 miles) will take you south through
the highest country to Hunter Canyon. The chance for a solitude-rich
Wilderness experience of a high order awaits the adventurous.
