## Natural Features

Rabbit Valley Area is nestled among scattered juniper trees at the edge of the
Colorado Plateau. With scenic views of the Colorado River, the San Juan and La
Sal Mountains, the Colorado National Monument, and the western flanks of the
10,000 ft. Grand Mesa - the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, make
this a must-see area.

This area is known for its paleontological resources with the family friendly
hike the “Trail Trough Time.” Here you can learn about this area’s history and
experience dinosaur bones on the landscape through a self-guided interpretive
hike.

Vegetation here is sparse, with only occasional green-ups and wildflower
blooms following wet weather. Average annual precipitation is less than 10
inches. Temperature extremes range from below zero to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Temperatures are more moderate during the spring and fall.

The Rabbit Valley Area is just west of Fruita CO, which serves as a hub for
outdoor recreation on nearby public lands including the red-rock canyons of
Colorado National Monument, and the rest of the McInnis Canyons National
Conservation Area (MCNCA) - home of the Kokopelli trail system, the Ruby-
Horsethief section of the Colorado River, Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness and

McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area

Rattlesnake and Mee Canyon provide outstanding opportunities for solitude and
primitive recreation. Geologic features in this area include arches, spires,
windows, giant alcoves and desert patina. Between these canyons are pinon-
juniper covered mesas which slope downward to the Colorado River. RATTLESNAKE
ARCHES: A short section connecting the top of the mesa to the bench below the
arches is rocky and steep and requires extra caution - it is not recommended.
From the trailhead travel 0.5 miles to an intersection. To the left takes you
to an area where you can view the arches from above. To the right takes you to
the Lower Arches Trail, which is 5 miles round trip (out and back). In 0.2
miles the trail splits - to the right goes to Pollock Bench Trailhead; stay to
the left for the arches trail. Camping is NOT permitted within 1/4 mile of the
Rattlesnake Arches Loop and along the access road to the trailhead. MEE
CANYON: The trail into Mee Canyon is primitive and only marked with rock
cairns. The route steeply descends sandstone layers with exposed cliffs.
Camping is NOT permitted at the Mee Canyon Alcove. **Leave No Trace

scattered pinyon-juniper woodland. The area's east-west Black Ridge is
dissected by seven red rock canyons varying in length. These canyons feature
geological characteristics such as spires, windows, giant alcoves and desert
patina. Waterfalls can be found here during spring runoff and after summer
thunderstorms. Deer, mountain lion, desert bighorn sheep, as well as golden
and bald eagles make the area home. Recreational use of the area focuses upon
visiting the canyons in conjunction with calm water float trips through Ruby
Canyon and hiking the canyons to view the arches in Rattlesnake and Mee
canyons. Visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, hunting, backpacking,
and primitive camping, as well as rafting, canoeing and kayaking on the
Colorado River. In 2000 the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness became part of the
now over 109 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System. In
wilderness, you can enjoy challenging recreational activities and
extraordinary opportunities for solitude. In an age of _"...increasing
population, accompanied by expanding settlement and growing
mechanization,..."_ you play an important role in helping to _"...secure for
the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an
enduring resource of wilderness"_ as called for by Congress in the Wilderness
Act of 1964. Please follow the regulations in place for this area, and use
Leave No Trace techniques when visiting to ensure protection of its unique
natural and experiential qualities.

Recreational use of the area focuses upon visiting the canyons in conjunction with calm water float trips through Ruby Canyon and hiking the canyons to view the arches in Rattlesnake and Mee canyons. Visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, hunting, backpacking, and primitive camping, as well as rafting, canoeing and kayaking on the Colorado River.  In 2000 the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness became part of the now over 109 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System. In wilderness, you can enjoy challenging recreational activities and extraordinary opportunities for solitude. Trips range from one to two days and beautiful designated campsites are
available in the canyon. Depending on water level, Westwater ranges from being
fun and splashy to fast and powerful. Excellent river skills are a must at
every water level. A permit is required for all private and commercial groups.

There are eleven named rapids within Westwater Canyon that range in difficulty
up to Class IV. The first two are Wild Horse and Little Dolores (a.k.a. Little
D). A great play spot for kayakers forms in the second part of Little D in low
to medium water levels. The most significant rapids lie within a two-mile
stretch of the inner canyon, formed by pre-Cambrian metamorphic rock. Rapids
here include (in order): Marble Canyon, Staircase, Big Hummer, Funnel Falls,
Surprise, Skull, Bowling Alley, Sock-It-To-Me, and Last Chance. The most
challenging rapids are Funnel Falls (especially at high water), Skull, and
Sock-It-To-Me. The BLM River Rangers can provide you with specific information
regarding the rapids during the check-in process.

A Westwater permit for private groups costs $10 per person with a limit of 25
people per permit. All groups must read and strictly adhere to the
stipulations of the permit. Call 435-259-7012 for a Westwater permit. The

Welcome to the wild and remote canyons and rivers of eastern Utah. The
Westwater Campground is located next to the Westwater Ranger Station; the
take-out for the Ruby-Horsethief  and put-in for the Westwater Canyon sections
of the Colorado River. This campground is ideal for those looking to camp
along the river at the start or end of a river float trip or otherwise
recreating in the area.

**Campsites 1 - 7** are available **first come, first serve only**. Payments
can be made by cash, check, or scan and pay throught the Recreation.gov mobile
app.

**Campsites 8 - 11** are available by **reservation only**. Reservations can
be made the day of, up to 6 months in advance from anywhere service is
available. This is the only option, cash and check payments are NOT available

<p>You will be eligible for a partial refund of the nights AFTER you depart that you did not use.  If you depart after the facility check-out time, you will not be eligible for a refund for that night  </p>

<p><strong>No-Shows</strong></p>
<p>A No Show occurs if you do not arrive at your campsite or cancel your reservation by check-out time (Noon) on the day after the scheduled arrival date. Staff will hold a campsite until check-out time (Noon) on the day following the arrival date. </p>
<p>No-shows are assessed a $20.00 Recreation.gov service fee and forfeit the first night’s recreation fee.  </p>

<p><strong>Refunds</strong></p>
<p>You can submit a refund request through your Recreation.gov account within 7 days of the departure/end date of your reservation.</p>
<ul>
<li>Applicable fees, such as the Recreation.gov reservation fees, service/cancellation fees, lottery application fees, and change fees, are non-refundable.</li>
<li>Refunds cannot be issued to any card other than the one used to pay. </li>
<li>In the event of an emergency closure, all fees will be refunded.  Attempts will be made to notify you using the contact information within your Recreation.gov customer profile.  </li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Interagency Pass Discounts</strong></p>
<p>Interagency Pass discounts do not apply to group campsite reservations.</p>

round trip within Ladder Canyon. Motorized and mechanized use is not allowed.

Opportunities for motorized trail riding from single track motorcycle trails,
ATV width trails, rock crawling on the Billings Canyon jeep trail, and 4-wheel
drive roads. This area is close to Grand Junction and offers excellent views
and scenery.
