Lassen Scenic Byway

Winding through both Lassen National Forest and Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Lassen Scenic Byway is one of the most scenic drives in California. The 185-mile loop can be traveled in only a day, but it's best to take the time to appreciate its beauty and diversity by making frequent stops to hike, take photos, fish, camp, and just enjoy the fascinating nature that surrounds you.

Make a stop at the Old Station Visitor Center for friendly suggestions to plan your visit, or simply begin the trip on your own by exploring your options. If hiking is your forte, don't miss the Spatter Cone Crest Trail. Check out actual volcanoes from this astounding vantage point! Or visit the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, a 25-mile former railroad line. Hike, bike, or ride horses along this scenic route.

**Navigating the Byway:** If you begin the byway at Old Station, take Highway 44 southeast to the junction with Highway 36, whereupon you follow 36 to the right. Follow it past Westwood to the Junction with Highway 147. At this point you can either continue straight on Highway 36 or follow 147 as it loops around Lake Almanor and meets up with 36 again just past Chester. At the junction with Highway 89 turn right and journey through Lassen Volcanic National Park past the junction with Highway 44 to conclude at Old Station. The byway can also be driven in the opposite direction.
