Kiavah Wilderness encompasses the eroded hills, canyons, and bajadas (lower
slopes) of the Scodie Mountains and parts of the Sequoia National Forest. A
unique mix of plant and animal species occurs within this transition zone
between the Mojave Desert and Sierra Nevada. Desert plants such as creosote
bush, Joshua tree, burrobush, and shadscale may be found in close association
with pinyon pine, juniper, canyon oak, and digger/grey pine. The vegetation
mosaic over a small geographic area provides habitat for a great diversity of
wildlife, including raptors, the yellow-eared pocket mouse, a variety of
lizards, and a number of migrant and resident bird species. This scenic
wilderness is a favorite destination for hikers and equestrians.

Elevations range from 3,000’ near the floor of Kelso Valley to over 5,800’ on

variety of wildlife. These include hundreds of bird species, black bear,
coyote, mountain lion, and bobcat. Mule deer, chukar, mountain quail, and
California quail also inhabit the area. Eagles, hawks, and other raptors nest
in the large cottonwoods and on the cliffs.

Visitors should note that there are no designated trails for backpackers and
the entire Wilderness lies within the Bureau of Land Management's Jawbone-

Bright Star Wilderness

## Overview

Embracing the eroded hills, canyons, and bajadas of the Scodie Mountains--the
southernmost reach of the Sierra Nevada--Kiavah Wilderness lies primarily
within Sequoia National Forest but includes a portion on BLM land. Here in the
transition zone between the Sierra Nevada and the Mojave Desert, you'll find
an unusual mix of plants and animals: creosote bush, Joshua tree, burro bush,
and shadscale growing near pinion pine, juniper, canyon oak, and gray pine;
yellow-eared pocket mice and lizards watching the skies for raptors.

Trails enter from all sides, often fading into the terrain. The Pacific Crest
Trail enters on the northeast from Walker Pass and crosses the area for 16
miles, exiting over Bird Spring Pass to the south. Four-wheel-drive roads
forge into the area on non-Wilderness intrusions from the east up Horse Canyon
and Cow Heaven Canyon, both accessible from State Highway 14. You should be
able to find water in numerous springs. However, due to the arid environment
and dry conditions be sure to carry plenty of water. Potable drinking water
may not be available year round. Visitors should not drink from creeks and
springs without properly treating the water. Recommended treatment is to bring
clear water to a rolling boil for 5 minutes or use a filter/purifying system
that eliminates giardia and waterborne bacteria.

of 1968. Elevations along the trail range from 500 feet near Whitewater to
just below 13,200 feet near Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada. Open to
nonmechanized use only, the trail is a popular journey for backpackers. In
southern California, winter and spring are generally the best times to travel,
when daytime temperatures remain below 80 degrees Fahrenheit, spring rains
bring out the wildflowers, and splashes of green accent the oak-chaparral
foothills. Trailheads can be accessed at the top of Walker Pass on State
Highway 178, at Bird Springs Pass off of designated route SC120 within the
Jawbone-Butterbredt ACEC, and at the Chimney Creek Campground on the eastern
side of the Chimney Peak Wilderness. The Owens Peak Segment begins at Walker
Pass in Kern County, and extends 41 miles north to the Sequoia National Forest
at Rockhouse Basin within the Domelands Wilderness. Elevations range from
5,245 feet at Walker Pass to 7,900 feet on Bear Mountain. The trail offers
spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

portion of the original Domelands Wilderness and consists of pinyon-covered
mountains along the eastern side of the Kern River's South Fork drainage. A
long, narrow, sage-covered valley runs along the eastern edge of the
wilderness. Rugged topography, perennial streams, variable terrain, and mixed
vegetation offer outstanding opportunities for solitude and unconfined
recreation. Hiking and horseback riding trails offer spectacular routes
through this pristine wilderness.

Signs indicating "Wilderness" and "Closed Road" or "Closed Route" are placed
at various intervals. Vehicles can be parked outside the wilderness boundary;
however, the boundary is set back 30 feet from unmaintained dirt roads and 300
feet on paved roads.

Mechanized or motorized vehicles are not permitted.

Hunting, fishing, and non-commercial trapping are allowed under state and
local laws.

the COVID-19 pandemic. Please practice social distancing, don’t gather in
large groups and clean your hands often. Social distancing recommendations may
require that visitors spread out to less popular areas and avoid times of
highest use, such as weekends. Visitors are encouraged to practiceLeave No
Trace principles. Please bring your own sanitary products, including toilet
paper and hand sanitizer, and pack out all trash as services are limited._

From cross-country play in the sandy bowl to steep hill climbs, the Dove
Springs OHV area offers over 5,000 acres of open-use public land for you to
enjoy. The Dove Springs bowl is also a great starting point to begin to
explore the hundreds of miles of trail riding opportunities available in this
region.

  * It is illegal to bring, dispose of, or possess any firewood containing nails, screws or other metal hardware within the open area. 
  * NO PALLETS! 
  * It is illegal to possess and/or discharge fireworks. 
  * Persons on an ATV under 14 years of age must be supervised by a parent or guardian. 
  * All persons, regardless of age, who operate an ATV on Public Lands must wear an approved safety helmet; Carrying passengers is prohibited on ATVs; Remember—Safety First, Every Ride, Every Time!

Keysville (formerly Keyesville) is a historic mining area that offers a wide
variety of recreational opportunities. Set in rolling terrain amidst a blue

River. A little exploration can turn up a wealth of historic resources,
including a variety of mining structures and features, a historic fort, and
the famous Walker Cabin. Keysville offers commercial and noncommercial white-

dispersed camping. A network of over seventy miles of trails provides for

Keysville Special Recreation Management Area

**7/17/2024-Chimney Peak, Long Valley campgrounds and portion of the Pacific
Crest Trail are closed due to wildland fire danger**

### Overview

Chimney Peak Recreation Area includes most of the Bakersfield Field Office's
Southern Sierra Recreation sites and Wilderness areas, including Domelands
Wilderness, Sacatar Trail Wilderness, Owens Peak Wilderness, Chimney Peak
Wilderness, Long Valley Campground, Chimney Creek Campground, Walker Pass
Campground, the Owens Peak segment of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail,
Lamont Peak and other Wilderness trails, and the former Chimney Peak
Backcountry byway. The area consists of approximately 105,000 acres stretching
from north of California State Highway 178 to the edge of the Field Office
near Kennedy Meadows. This rugged section of the southern Sierra Nevada
mountains offers a number of excellent opportunities for hiking, bakcpacking,
day hiking, horseback riding, and outstanding opportunities for primitive
recreation and experiences of solitude and isolation.

Chimney Peak Wilderness encompasses rocky mountainous terrain dominated by
pinyon pine with areas of sagebrush. There are scattered springs and streams,
with their associated riparian habitat species, and seasonal wildflower
displays. The Pacific Crest Trail passes through a portion of this wilderness
on its way to the Domelands Wilderness.

## Overview

Owens Peak, the highest point in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains at more
than 8,400 feet, stands near the center of Owens Peak Wilderness. It presides
over mountainous terrain with deep, winding canyons, many with rich riparian
vegetation fed by bubbling springs. The Sierra Nevada meets the Great Basin
and the Mojave Desert here, creating an unusual ecosystem. You'll find
creosote bush scrub communities on the bajadas; scattered yuccas, cactuses,
flowering annuals, cottonwoods, and oaks in the canyons and valleys; and
juniper and piñon woodlands with sagebrush and digger pines on the upper
elevations. Mule deer graze beneath golden eagles and prairie falcons. You may
see evidence of active human use of this area dating back to prehistoric
times.

The Pacific Crest Trail crosses through the area north-south. Other trails
leave the PCT to dive off the crest and eventually intersect with roads
outside the Wilderness.

use of motor vehicles (including OHVs), motorboats, motorized equipment,
bicycles, hang gliders, wagons, carts, portage wheels, and the landing of
aircraft including helicopters, unless provided for in specific legislation.
In a few areas some exceptions allowing the use of motorized equipment or
mechanical transport are described in the special regulations in effect for a
