Rocks West Wilderness Study Area. This gently sloping prairie on the south
face of the Bennett Hills includes canyons with basalt bluffs, arches, pillars
and hoodoos. Shaded canyons support pockets of willows, aspen, cottonwood,
serviceberry and chokecherry. Wildlife species include elk, deer, coyotes,
bear, birds of prey and upland game birds.

Gooding City of Rocks West Wilderness Study Area

In Idaho, BLM manages nearly 15,000 acres of public lands in the Gooding City
of Rocks East Wilderness Study Area. The Mount Bennett Hills are a rolling
belt of foothills between the Sawtooth Mountains to the north and the Snake
River Plain to the south. The southeastern portion of the WSA is composed of
series of deep canyons carved into rhyolite. Throughout these canyons are
rhyolite columns which rise more than 100 feet. Here you will find unusual
rock formations called hoodoos. More shaded sections of the canyons support
pockets of willows, aspen, cottonwood, serviceberry and chokecherry. Elk,
deer, coyotes, bears, birds of prey, upland game birds and cutthroat trout
call this area home.

basalt outcrops. The higher elevations have aspen, tobacco brush, Indian
paintbrush and lupine. Elk, deer, bear, coyotes, birds of prey and upland game
birds can be seen here. Visitors here can enjoy hiking, nature study,
photography and hunting.

Wilderness Study Area. Located at the southern toe of the Lemhi Mountain
Range, this landscape is characterized by rocky canyons massive cliffs and
faults. The lower slopes and canyon bottoms contain sagebrush forbs and
grasses typical of this low moisture high desert environment. Patches of
juniper trees are found throughout the area and small stands of Douglas-fir
grow at the higher elevations. Primitive recreation opportunities for hiking,
camping and nature study can be found here. Other recreation opportunities can
be found at the nearby Gooding City of Rocks WSA.
