about the history of the area. The campground is also adjacent to the
Willamette National Forest, which stretches for 110 miles along the western

## Overview:

Elkhorn Creek is a unique, pristine, low-elevation setting, with limited
access, providing a landscape with few signs of human disturbance or activity.
It flows through the heavily forested and rugged foothills of the west side of
the Cascade Range and within the Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area, which is
known for its majestic old-growth forests. The 'wild' section flows from a
point along the Willamette National Forest to 0.6 mile downstream of its
confluence with Buck Creek.

## Know Before You Go:

  * Elkhorn Creek has limited and difficult access. The segment is much valued by the kayaking community, some of whom have been known to lower themselves and their gear down a thousand foot cliff face. Once there, they enjoy a canyon of spectacular beauty and isolation. 
  * There are no developed recreation sites along Elkhorn Creek itself; however, Nearby BLM’s seasonally-opened Elkhorn Valley and Canyon Creek recreation sites offer camping and picnicking, respectively. This waterway abuts the Forest Service’s Opal Creek Scenic Area, and is close to the Opal Creek wilderness further up the Little North Santiam River. 
  * When recreating on public lands, practice Leave-No-Trace Principles. 
  * Don't Move Firewood: Please protect Pacific Northwest forests by preventing the spread of invasive species. Firewood can carry insects and diseases that can threaten the health of our western forests. You can make a difference by obtaining and burning your firewood near your camping destination.

Quartzville Back Country Byway

Trail systems in the Wilderness were significantly impacted by recent fire
activity, so not all trails are passable, especially at higher elevations. We
advise turning around if the trail becomes difficult to follow due to down
trees and brush. For additional fire closures and restrictions within the

The United States Congress designated the Table Rock Wilderness in 1984 and it
now has over 5,786 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Oregon and is
managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

A remnant of a lava flow that once covered this region along the western
foothills of the Cascades, the "fortress" of Table Rock stands at 4,881 feet
above the northeastern portion of this small Wilderness. On this steep and
rugged terrain you'll find a quiet forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock,
with noble fir at higher elevations and crowds of rhododendron on many of the
upper slopes, an island of old growth in an ocean of forest development. At
least two endangered plants bloom here: Oregon sullivantia and Gorman's aster.
Deer and elk wander about in winter, and the northern spotted owl has been
spotted among the old trees.

**Regulations:**  
Motorized equipment and equipment used for mechanical transport are generally
prohibited on all federal lands designated as wilderness. This includes the
use of motor vehicles (including OHVs), motorboats, motorized equipment,
bicycles, hang gliders, wagons, carts, portage wheels, and the landing of
aircraft including helicopters, unless provided for in specific legislation.
In a few areas some exceptions allowing the use of motorized equipment or
mechanical transport are described in the special regulations in effect for a
specific area. Contact the agency for more information about regulations.

<p>Trail systems in the Wilderness were significantly impacted by recent fire activity, so not all trails are passable, especially at higher elevations. We advise turning around if the trail becomes difficult to follow due to down trees and brush. <p>The United States Congress designated the Table Rock Wilderness in 1984 and it now has over 5,786 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Oregon and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).</p>

<p>A remnant of a lava flow that once covered this region along the western foothills of the Cascades, the "fortress" of Table Rock stands at 4,881 feet above the northeastern portion of this small Wilderness. On this steep and rugged terrain you'll find a quiet forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock, with noble fir at higher elevations and crowds of rhododendron on many of the upper slopes, an island of old growth in an ocean of forest development. At least two endangered plants bloom here: Oregon sullivantia and Gorman's aster. Deer and elk wander about in winter, and the northern spotted owl has been spotted among the old trees.</p>
