The Dry Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area is located in Washoe County, Nevada.
The area is located east of Wendel, California and west of Reno, Nevada off of
Sand Pass Road and High Rock Road. The roads and trails traverse a wide
variety of terrain including flat, sandy, high desert sagebrush country to
steep lava rock canyons. Most trails are difficult motorcycle trails.

Vehicle use is limited to designated routes. The designated roads and trails
are signed as motorcycle, all-terrain vehicles (ATV), and 4WD use depending on
width and terrain.

There are two developed trailheads; the Turn of the Road Trailhead is a small
graveled parking area with visitor information, picnic tables, bbq's and
loading Ramps. The Mission Wells trailhead has a maintained graveled entrance
road and support facilities including a restroom, picnic tables, fire rings,
bbq's and visitor information.

In addition to OHV use, Dry Valley is utilized by hikers, horseback riders,
hunters and wildlife photographers. Visitors enjoy the beautiful vistas and
canyons and good opportunities for viewing wildlife, wild horses and burros.

Operation and maintenance of the OHV area is provided by the BLM Eagle Lake
Field Office and a partnership with the Great Basing Institute (GBI) through
funds provided, in part, by the State of Nevada Recreation Trails Program
(RTP).

The Dry Valley Rim WSA is located in Washoe County, Nevada (76,177 acres) and
Lassen County, California (18,131 acres). The WSA contains 94,308 acres of
BLM-administered land and surrounds 338 acres of private land that is located
in eight parcels, varying in size from 40 to 160 acres. The Dry Valley Rim
WSA, approximately 20 miles north to south, is predominantly natural with
minor human imprints that have a negligible overall effect on naturalness in
the area. The area is a north- to south-trending fault-block that rises
gradually from the western side of the WSA to the abrupt 500 to 1,500 foot
face of Dry Valley Rim, which is located along the east side of the WSA.
Sagebrush and grass are the predominant vegetation throughout the WSA.

The Skedaddle Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is a remarkable natural region
located primarily in Lassen County, California (99.5%), with a small section
extending into Washoe County, Nevada (0.5%). Spanning roughly 10 by 12 miles,
the WSA encompasses 62,010 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management
(BLM), along with 1,179 acres of private land distributed across seven
parcels, each ranging from 40 to 640 acres.

**Hunting & OHV Use**

Hunting is a traditional and permitted recreational activity within the
Skedaddle Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The Bureau of Land Management manages
WSAs to preserve wilderness characteristics while allowing uses that do not
impair the area’s suitability for future wilderness designation.

**General Regulations**

  * Hunting is allowed in accordance with California and Nevada state laws, seasons, licensing requirements, and zone designations. 
  * Firearms and archery equipment are permitted; hunters must adhere to federal and state shooting safety restrictions, including **36 CFR** , which prohibits shooting within **150 yards of residences, buildings, campsites, or developed recreation sites**. 

**Motorized and Mechanized Access**

  * M**otorized and mechanized travel is limited to existing designated routes**. Cross‑country travel is prohibited. 
  * Vehicles, including ATVs/UTVs, may not travel off designated open routes to retrieve game.

**Resource Protection**

  * Hunters must avoid disturbing cultural sites, wildlife habitat, and riparian areas. 
  * Do not construct blinds, platforms, or other structures. Permanent installations are not allowed within WSAs. 

## Scenic Landscapes

Situated on the northwestern edge of the arid Great Basin, the area features
dramatic eroded volcanic mountains and expansive desert valleys—remnants of
ancient lake beds. The Skedaddle and Amedee Mountains, found at the heart of
the WSA, dominate the landscape, rising from seasonally dry lake beds and
gentle hills. Elevations range from 4,200 feet to Hot Springs Peak, which
towers at 7,680 feet atop Skedaddle Mountain.

## Geological Wonders

At the center of the WSA lies an eroded volcanic caldera with rugged cliffs,
winding canyons, striking peaks, and upland basins. The higher slopes of the
Skedaddle Mountains are dotted with groves of aspen and large berry shrubs,
especially on northern exposures. Deep canyons support diverse riparian
vegetation, including willows, wild roses, and berry shrubs, while upland
basins host small grassy meadows. Sagebrush and bunch grass cover much of the
landscape, creating a quintessential Great Basin environment.

## Distinctive Features

The northern and eastern boundaries of the WSA are characterized by open
sagebrush flats that gently transition into long toe slopes approaching
Skedaddle Mountain. On the southern and western edges, toe slopes are
blanketed with shrubs and grasses atop alluvial and gravel benches—the visible
remains of Pleistocene Lake Lahontan’s ancient shorelines. These slopes rise
into the steep, rocky terrain of the Amedee Mountains, which are defined by
numerous canyons and ridges to the south and bordered by the nearly vertical,
crumbly volcanic cliffs known as Wendell Cliffs to the west.

## Overview

The Fort Sage Off-Highway Vehicle Area is located in the high desert region of
northeastern California outside the town of Doyle. The area is about 45 miles
south of Susanville, California and 45 miles north of Reno, Nevada. Visitors
should utilize Laver Crossing Road to access the area due to a bridge
restriction off the Doyle Loop Road. The Special Recreation Management Area
consists of approximately 29,000 acres of public land that is managed for off-
highway vehicle use such as motorcycles, ATV's, Side by Sides, and 4wd.

There are developed OHV staging areas within Fort Sage with graveled access
roads accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles and green/red sticker legal
vehicles. Per county ordinance 2011-007 OHV's can legally ride on the CR 327
Fort Sage Road and CR 344 Summers Road.

Vehicle use within the recreation area is limited to the 100 miles of
designated roads and trails and is appropriate for motorcycle, all-terrain
vehicles (ATV), Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV), and 4-wheel drive vehicles.
The trails are marked with numbered signs displaying difficulty rating and
recommended vehicle type depending on the width of the trail. The routes
traverse a wide variety of terrain including flat, sandy, high desert
sagebrush country and rocky, steep canyons and gulches.

Vehicle Recreation Division. The BLM Eagle Lake Field Office recently finished
constructing the Raptor Trailhead located on the Fort Sage entrance road about
.03 miles east of the Fort Sage Trailhead. An updated 2018 brochure and map is
now available, please stay on the signed trails.
