The Douglas Point Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) in Charles County,
Maryland, offers fantastic opportunities for hiking, horseback riding,
hunting, fossil collecting, and relaxing along the shore. Located near fast-
paced Washington, D.C., it is one of the last remaining undeveloped tracts
along the Potomac River. Douglas Point encompasses 548 acres of hardwood
forest and marshes, a picnic area overlook, river shoreline, an accessible
historical walk, and hunting blinds.

On December 21, 2001, BLM and the State of Maryland jointly acquired about
1,270 acres of land known as Douglas Point, lying on the east side of the
Potomac River. Douglas Point is part of the Nanjemoy Natural Resource
Management Area (NRMA) which is jointly managed by the BLM and the Maryland
Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). The management of this property offers
a unique opportunity for federal, state, and local agencies to work together
in a seamless effort with the public to both protect the quality resources in
this area for generations to come, and to allow compatible passive
recreational use of these public lands.

The Douglas Point tract contains magnificent hardwood forests, historic
houses, and scenic views. Douglas Point is one of the most ecologically and
culturally significant landscapes in the State of Maryland. The area’s
outstanding natural attributes are equally matched by its archaeological
resources and history, including early American Indian sites, remnants from
the Civil War, ruins of the colonial-era Chiles homesite, as well as dozens of
World War I-era sunken ships, which now lie in Mallows Bay.

collection of shipwrecks, as well as an array of wildlife inhabiting the
surrounding area of Mallows Bay. Skeletons of over 100 wooden and steel-hulled
steamships from the 1700s to the 1900s, called the Ghost Fleet, are protruding
from the water line waiting to be explored. While enjoying the waters on a
self-guided tour, wildlife such as osprey, largemouth bass, turtles, and
beavers can be viewed both on the shore and on the water. From kayaking down
this sanctuary or fishing in the river, visitors can learn about these waters
that represent American heritage.

## Overview

Cabin Camp 3 is located in Prince William Forest Park and is one of five large
cabin camp facilities located in the park. Camp 3 is the only camp where
visitors can rent a single cabin. There are thirteen cabins available for
rent. The cabins are very rustic and provide a unique camping experience in
Northern Virginia. The cabins offer easy access to 37 miles (60 km) of hiking
and 21 miles (34 km) of biking trails in the park.

The park's land was set aside during the Great Depression, and in 1935 the
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began restoring the previously over-farmed
acreage, converting it to recreational lands for public use. The CCC built
trails, dams and cabins, making the park a wonderful place for recreation and
relaxation.

The park offers many Things to Do including hiking, biking, orienteering and
fishing. Hikers enjoy exploring the park's 37 miles of foot trails. Campers
may hike South Orenda Road to South Valley Trail and Laurel Trail Loop.

Bicyclists will find On and Off Road Biking on 21 miles (34 km) of paved roads
within the park, including the 12-mile (19 km) Scenic Drive. Minimal traffic
and a 25 m.p.h. (40 kph) speed limit make this a popular biking route. A
3-mile (5 km), family-friendly paved bike lane leads to the campground.
Mountain biking is also available on 10 miles (16 km) of gravel fire roads.

The park boasts also 30 orienteering courses with picturesque settings.
Orienteering is a 19th century Scandinavian sport primarily used as military

Approximately 18 miles (29 km) of streams and two small lakes are open to the
public for fishing. The water quality of Quantico Creek supports numerous fish
species and other aquatic life. The most common fish species are bluegill,

## Facilities

The campground is open mid-April through the first weekend in November and
there are three 4-person, seven 6-person, and three 10-person cabins. The
4-person and 6-person cabins are located in the "A" Unit and the 10-person
cabins are located in the "B" Unit. There is a bath house with hot showers,
and a craft lodge in both the A unit and the B unit. All campers renting
cabins must share these common spaces.

including a major portion of the Quantico Creek watershed. The area is the
largest example of a piedmont forest ecosystem, the piedmont being the
geographic plateau between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic coast.
The park represents one of the largest parcels of undeveloped land in the area
and is the National Park Service's third largest unit in Virginia.

Various geological outcroppings, winding creeks, gently rolling slopes and
man-made lakes make wonderful destinations for any adventurous visitor.

Individual cabin rentals and a small group site are available in Cabin Camp 3.
This forested camp was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the
1930s. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cabin
Camp 3, C Unit is made for smaller groups. C Unit has a linear layout and
sleeps 76 visitors. C Unit's 10-person cabins make it one of the best in the
park for group outings. The beautiful brick fireplaces in the dining hall and
craft lodges give this camp a unique character.

camp is the only one in the park without a fireplace in its dining hall, the
theater building/gymnasium is the only one in the park.

The 199 visitors who can sleep in this Cabin Camp 4 can enjoy the new roofs and windows that help ensure that these historic structures last for future generations. Cabin Camp 4 has mostly 10-person sleeping cabins. While this camp is the only one in the park without a fireplace in its dining hall, the theater building/gymnasium is the only one in the park.

with cabins that sleeps 2 to 4 people and larger dorm buildings that sleep 24.

Chopawamsic Backcountry Area limits camping to six people or one family unit
per site. Chopawamsic is not designed for group camping, which is available at
Turkey Run Ridge Group Campground.

The northern side of Breckenridge Reservoir is accessible by trail from the
Chopawamsic Backcountry Area for fishing.

This primitive backcountry camping area is open year-round barring inclement
weather. There are 8 hike-in campsite spots located along a 2 mile (3.2 km)
loop trail. Each spot contains a flat area for pitching a tent and a wooden
post with the site number and is located a short distance off of the loop
trail. There is a parking area at the start of the loop trail that has one
vault toilet. Everything you carry with you when hiking to the sites must be
carried out with you when you leave.

The South Valley, Oak Ridge and Farms to Forest Trails all begin at the
campground entrance.

Bicyclists will find On and Off Road Biking on 21 miles (34 km) of paved roads
within the park, including the 12-mile (19 km) Scenic Drive. Minimal traffic
and a 25 m.p.h. (40 kph) speed limit make this a popular biking route. A
3-mile (5 km), family-friendly paved bike lane leads to the campground.
Mountain biking is also available on 10 miles (16 km) of gravel fire roads.

The park boasts also 30 orienteering courses with picturesque settings.
Orienteering is a 19th century Scandinavian sport primarily used as military
training. The courses were developed in 1972 and continue to provide hours of
entertainment and exploration for park visitors.

Approximately 18 miles (29 km) of streams and two small lakes are open to the
public for fishing. The water quality of Quantico Creek supports numerous fish
species and other aquatic life. The most common fish species are bluegill,
pumpkinseed, largemouth bass and channel catfish.

## Facilities

The campground is open March through November and accommodates tents, RVs and
trailers.

Recreational vehicles may not exceed 32 feet in length (9.75 m) and 12 feet
(3.7 m) in height. Trailers and fifth wheels are limited to 26 feet (7.9 m) in
length and 12 feet (3.6 m) in height.

Each site has a picnic table, grill, lantern post and parking spur. Each loop
has restrooms with sinks and flush toilets. Loop B also has showers. A and C
unit comfort stations close down at the first part of November for
winterizing. Loop B comfort station is open till the camp closure the first of
December.

## Recreation

The park offers many recreational activities, including hiking, biking,
orienteering and fishing. Hikers enjoy exploring the park's 37 miles of foot
trails. Bicyclists will find 21 miles of paved roads within the park,
including the 12-mile Scenic Drive. Little traffic and a 25 m.p.h. speed limit
make this a popular biking spot. A 3-mile, family-friendly paved bike lane
leads to the Oak Ridge campground. Mountain biking is also available on 10
miles of gravel fire roads. The park boasts 30 orienteering courses within a
forested setting. Orienteering is a 19th century Scandinavian sport primarily
used as military training. The courses were developed in 1972 and continue to
provide hours of entertainment and exploration for park visitors.
Approximately 18 miles of streams and two small lakes are open to the public
for fishing. The water quality of Quantico Creek supports numerous fish
species and other aquatic life. The most common fish species are bluegill,
pumpkinseed, largemouth bass, and channel catfish.

## Facilities

Turkey Run Ridge Group Campground, open year-round, is a camping facility for
organized groups of seven or more people. It is the perfect place for scout
troops and school groups. Six campsites hold up to 25 campers, and three
campsites accommodate up to 40 campers. The campsites accommodate tents only.
Each site has picnic tables, fire pits and a lantern post. Restrooms feature
sinks and flush toilets. There is no shower facility. Water spigot
availability is limited to the warmer months, specifically when nighttime
temperatures consistently remain above freezing. During colder periods,
spigots may not be operational. If camping during the winter or early spring,
anticipate needing to fill your water bottles at the restroom sinks. Other
water sources may be turned off during the colder months. Parking is limited
for each site. Park in designated parking spots only. Carpooling is highly
encouraged due to limited parking.

An amphitheater with bench seating and a large fire ring is available on a
first come, first served basis. No overnight camping is permitted. Between
dusk and dawn, the amphitheater is for use by those with a valid camping
reservation only. Access to the amphitheater is limited to walking and the use
of assistive mobility devices only. Vehicles are not allowed to be driven to
the amphitheater.

NOTE: Due to the amphitheater's proximity to a critical wastewater pump
station, you may unpredictably experience an odor during certain weather
conditions. An alternative gathering site is located at the campfire circle
adjacent to the main parking area near the NPS office building. Access to the
alternative campfire circle is best by the bulletin board close to the
building.

## Natural Features

Prince William Forest Park preserves approximately 15,000 acres of Piedmont
forest covering a major portion of the Quantico Creek watershed. The park
represents one of the largest parcels of undeveloped land in the area and is
the third largest unit of the National Park System in Virginia, the largest
example of a Piedmont forest ecosystem in the National Park System, making it
a significant natural resource. Various geologic outcroppings, winding creeks,
gentle rolling hills and man-made lakes make wonderful destinations for any
venturing visitor. The park is home to 38 species of mammals, 24 species of
amphibians, 27 species of reptiles, more than 100 species of birds, 23 species
of fish and an unknown number of invertebrates. More than 700 plant species
exist in Prince William Forest Park. From the smallest wildflower to the
tallest tree, each species has a special role to play in this forest
ecosystem. From tree bark in winter, wildflowers in spring, canopy cover in
summer, and autumn colors in fall, Prince William Forest Park offers beautiful
scenery year-round.

## Nearby Attractions

Prince William Forest Park is centrally located, with easy access to all of
the attractions the Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., area have to
offer. From the park entrance, the National Museum of the Marine Corps and the
main gate of the United States Marine Corps Base Quantico are just a mile
away. The park is located directly between historic Fredericksburg and
Spotsylvania National Military Park and Manassas National Battlefield Park.

<p>Prince William Forest Park is located 35 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., the park's land was set aside during the Great Depression. In 1935 the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began restoring the previously over-farmed acreage, converting it to recreational lands for public use. The CCC built trails, dams, and cabins, making the park a wonderful place for recreation and relaxation.  Turkey Run Ridge Group Campground has nine (9) reservable wooded group campsites which can accommodate a maximum of 25 to 40 people per site.  The campground has on-site restrooms (no showers), access to hiking trails, and a first come first served amphitheater with campfire ring. Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge was established in
1969, and became the first national wildlife refuge created specifically for
the protection of bald eagles. Once on the brink of extinction, the bald eagle
enjoys the safety of the refuge’s forests and shoreline for nesting and
foraging along the upper portions of the Potomac River and its tributaries.
Other species observed on the refuge include wood thrush, white-tailed deer,
groundhog, and wood duck.

Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge is adjacent to a
rapidly growing metropolitan area where habitat is constantly altered. The
refuge provides wildlife a relatively remote area of upland forests and
freshwater marshes that extend into the Potomac River. Great Marsh, a 207-acre
tidal freshwater marsh, is a valuable feature of the refuge, and is home to
one of Virginia’s largest great blue heron breeding colonies.

The Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) offers 13.4 miles of
hiking trails, 7 miles of horseback riding trails and 6.6 miles of mountain
biking trails. It is the site of 2 fishing ponds (one of which is universally
accessible), 800 acres of forest and meadows, environmental education
programs, equestrian facilities, geocaching, and bird watching. Meadowood
provides year-round environmental education and Jr Ranger programs for
homeschoolers, public and private schools, local 4-H groups and community
youth agencies.

Test your biking skills on our three single track trails with their own flavor
and style: Yard Sale (known as our downhill pump track) is a fast and flowing
rhythm with table tops; Stinger is a rustic and narrow, predominately hand
built trail with natural obstacles; and Boss is a chunky flow trail with rock
gardens, drop offs, and three-dimensional wooden features like rolling
boardwalks and banked turns. These trails are geared toward the intermediate
skilled rider, with options for beginners and experts alike.

This landscape mosaic contains a variety of terrains and vegetation types.
These include gently sloping open meadows, mature hardwood forests along steep
slopes and floodplains, and riparian areas, freshwater ponds and streams. Red
and white oak, beech, sweet gum, Virginia pine, and persimmon, which are
common sights in mid-Atlantic woodlands and appear throughout the forests at
Meadowood. The ponds, streams and riparian areas in the SRMA host a wide
variety of insects, fish and other wildlife.

BLM and the State of Virginia survey the population in the fishing ponds
periodically and restock them when needed. Grass-eating carp are among the
species stocked in the ponds; they cannot reproduce, and they eat invasive
aquatic weeds, which would otherwise overwhelm small ponds. In addition to
stocked species, the American eel appears in the area’s ponds and streams and
serves as attractants to the local Bald eagles. Migrating waterfowl such as
various duck species, Canada geese, and herons commonly occur at water
features. Songbirds, dragonflies and butterflies are abundant not only in the
ponds and meadows, but within the myriad acres of edge habitat. Whitetail
deer, fox squirrels, and red fox abound throughout Meadowood. The North
American beaver makes the occasional appearance in the floodplains of Thompson
Creek, Giles Run, and South Branch, as well as at Enchanted Pond.
