Diamond Craters, an Outstanding Natural Area of 17,000 acres (23 square
miles), has some of the most diverse basaltic volcanic features in the nation
clustered within a small, accessible area. The area displays an entire range
of eruptions possible in basaltic volcanism. It was formed sometime in the
past 25,000 years and now resembles a thin, rocky pancake with a few bumps.
Features identifiable at the Outstanding Natural Area include craters and
vents, cinder cones, spatter cones, lava tubes, driblet spires, a graben, and
a water-filled maar.

## Know Before You Go

  * It took thousands of years of volcanic activity to form Diamond Craters, but only a few seconds can damage its features. Help BLM protect this area. Please do not destroy or collect plants, animals or rocks.
  * There are no restroom facilities or other amenities. Bring your own water and shelter and follow Leave No Trace principles: pack it in, pack it out.
  * Keep your vehicle on hard-packed road surfaces and obvious parking areas.

approximately 500,000 acres of private and public land offering diverse scenic
and recreation experiences. The CMPA encompasses deep glacier-carved gorges,
stunning scenery, wilderness, wild and scenic rivers, and a way of life for
all who live there. The 52-mile Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway provides
access to four campgrounds, numerous trails, the Riddle Brothers Ranch
National Historic District, wild horse roaming areas, and opportunities for
fishing and hunting. The views from Kiger Gorge, East Rim, Big Indian Gorge,
Wildhorse, and Little Blitzen Gorge overlooks are not to miss!

## Know Before You Go

  * There are long distances between services and amenities, such as fuel, drinking water, restrooms and cell phone reception.
  * Most roads in the area are rough and primitive, high clearance or 4x4 vehicles along with high quality tires are recommended.
  * The remote nature and vast landscape of the area may leave even the most experienced traveler confused or lost. Traveling with a current map of the area is essential.

South Steens Campground is located in the heart of Steens Mountain. Visitors
will find picnic tables and grills at 36 family campsites amid juniper and
sage. The equestrian site, designed specifically for horse users, is directly
adjacent to the family campground. Recreational stock (horses, mules, llamas,
goats, etc.) are not allowed in the family portion of South Steens Campground,
but are welcome and comfortable at 15 equestrian sites complete with tie posts
and small corrals.

President Theodore Roosevelt as the Lake Malheur Reservation. Roosevelt set
aside unclaimed government lands encompassed by Malheur, Mud, and Harney Lakes
“as a preserve and breeding ground for native birds.” The newly established
“Lake Malheur Reservation” was the 19th of 51 wildlife refuges created by
Roosevelt during his tenure as president. At the time, Malheur was the third
