can be yours with planning.

Highway with Cantwell Junction on the Parks Highway. A loop trip from
Fairbanks is 436 miles and a loop trip from Anchorage is about 600 miles. Gas
is available at Cantwell. There is no gas at Paxson. Allow several days for
these trips.

land, 160 miles of streams, and 21 lakes. The Tangle River connects several of
the Tangle Lakes and then drains into the Delta River, which joins the Tanana
River, before flowing into the mighty Yukon River.

## Season and Climate

River-running season generally begins in early to mid-June, depending on ice
breakup and precipitation. Average annual precipitation measured at Paxson is
11 inches of rain and 120 inches of snow. July is commonly the wettest month.
During the summer, temperatures range from 35 °F to 70 °F, with occasional
highs in the 80s. By mid-September the shorter daylight and colder
temperatures bring the river recreation season to an end.

## History and Prehistory

Native people may have lived in this area as long ago as the end of the last
ice age (about 10,000 years ago). Approximately 226,660 acres in the Tangle
Lakes area are designated as the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District. This
area has hundreds of archaeological sites that are listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.

## Vegetation

Vegetation ranges from arctic tundra to spruce-poplar forests. Grasses, sedges
and forbs grow on the highest, most exposed slopes and above the brush line.
Willows grow on moist lowland sites and in the many brushy draws draining the
side slopes.

Dwarf birch occupies drier sites with well-drained soils. Alder grows on steep
slopes of hillsides and canyon walls. Forests of white and black spruce grow
in small pockets along the river, and on some hillsides below an elevation of
3,200 feet. You will find open spruce-poplar forests on lowland sites along
the river and on some mid-slope hillsides.

Understory plants are varied and abundant. Fireweed, bistort, rose, mountain
avens, burnet, and shrubby cinquefoil are just some of the many plants in the
area. In August, many people travel to Tangle Lakes to pick blueberries. Other
harvestable berries in the Delta River area include crowberry, alpine
bearberry, cranberry and red currant.

## Wildlife

Wildlife provides opportunities for hunting, trapping, photography and
viewing. Hunters seek moose, caribou, bear, Dall sheep, ptarmigan, waterfowl
and snowshoe hare. Trappers harvest beaver, fox, wolf, marten, lynx,
wolverine, otter, muskrat and mink.

Of the 110 species of birds identified in this area, most are summer residents
(May to September). Nesting bald eagles can be observed from Tangle Lakes to
the lower Delta River during the summers.

Wildlife viewing is best in the early morning.

## Fish

Tangle Lakes and the Delta River contain grayling, round whitefish, lake
trout, burbot and longnose suckers. Most fishing is for grayling, but good
lake trout fishing is available in late winter and early spring.

Salmon are not found in the Delta River due to the 15-foot-high falls and the
heavy silt load entering from Eureka Creek.

You can purchase an Alaska fishing license and view sport fishing regulations
online at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website or buy in person from
license agents throughout the state, including stores in Glennallen, Delta
Junction and Tok.

Delta Wild and Scenic River

Located at mile 19.5 of the Denali Highway, this trail is for foot traffic
only. The trail is approximately ѕ of a mile one way and has an elevation gain
of 1500 feet. Appropriate footwear is advised as the trail is strenuous and
fairly wet over the first .25 mile. Allow for 1.5 hours for in/out.

"Alaska’s Upper and Lower Tangle Lakes, the Tangle River, and the upper
stretch of the Delta River were all designated as part of the National Wild
and Scenic Rivers system by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation
Act in 1980. Consisting of approximately 44,617 acres, spread over 62 river
miles, it was designated for its recreation, scenic, fisheries, wildlife, and
cultural values. The watershed originates south of the Denali Highway and
drains north through the Alaska Range. It provides excellent habitat for over
100 species of migrating birds and waterfowl, migrating caribou, grayling,
whitefish, lake trout, and burbot. The arctic tundra with grasses and sedges
make it popular for berry picking. Fall, winter and spring visitors will often
witness subsistence hunting and gathering activities. Portions of the river
corridor are also located within the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District and
contain hundreds of archaeological sites listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. Use of the area for hunting, mining, and subsisting are
evidenced here for the last 10,000 years. There are several ways to explore
and enjoy the Delta River system. Most visitors access their adventures
through the popular BLM Tangle Lakes Campground or the Delta River Wayside,
which are both accessible from the Denali Highway. Canoers enjoy extended
trips into remote areas of Upper Tangle Lakes, where 15 primitive campsites
along tundra-covered, rolling hills offer dramatic views of the Alaska Range.
Shorter excursions into both Upper and Lower Tangle Lakes provide 25
campsites, popular to fly fishermen, birders, and boaters. Experienced Canoers
prefer 2- to 3-day excursions down the Delta River, which require a few hours’
paddle through Lower Tangle Lakes and navigation of a 20-mile section of the
Delta River. The trip includes sections of Class I, II and III rapids; 20
primitive campsites among steep, alluvial slopes and rock cliffs of the Alaska
Range; a half-mile portage around unnavigable waterfalls; and challenging
paddles through sections with strong headwinds or cold, silty, glacial water.
The Lower Delta River to Black Rapids Glacier and beyond is only for the

"Alaska’s Upper and Lower Tangle Lakes, the Tangle River, and the upper stretch of the Delta River were all designated as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980.  Consisting of approximately 44,617 acres, spread over 62 river miles, it was designated for its recreation, scenic, fisheries, wildlife, and cultural values. 

The watershed originates south of the Denali Highway and drains north through the Alaska Range. It provides excellent habitat for over 100 species of migrating birds and waterfowl, migrating caribou, grayling, whitefish, lake trout, and burbot. The arctic tundra with grasses and sedges make it popular for berry picking.  Fall, winter and spring visitors will often witness subsistence hunting and gathering activities. Portions of the river corridor are also located within the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District and contain hundreds of archaeological sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Use of the area for hunting, mining, and subsisting are evidenced here for the last 10,000 years.  

There are several ways to explore and enjoy the Delta River system. Most visitors access their adventures through the popular BLM Tangle Lakes Campground or the Delta River Wayside, which are both accessible from the Denali Highway. Canoers enjoy extended trips into remote areas of Upper Tangle Lakes, where 15 primitive campsites along tundra-covered, rolling hills offer dramatic views of the Alaska Range.  Shorter excursions into both Upper and Lower Tangle Lakes provide 25 campsites, popular to fly fishermen, birders, and boaters. Experienced Canoers prefer 2- to 3-day excursions down the Delta River, which require a few hours’ paddle through Lower Tangle Lakes and navigation of a 20-mile section of the Delta River. The trip includes sections of Class I, II and III rapids; 20 primitive campsites among steep, alluvial slopes and rock cliffs of the Alaska Range; a half-mile portage around unnavigable waterfalls; and challenging paddles through sections with strong headwinds or cold, silty, glacial water. The Lower Delta River to Black Rapids Glacier and beyond is only for the experienced kayaker or whitewater rafter. With high-standing waves and glacial silt, the area is not recommended for open canoes.  Black Rapids Canyon is rated Class III-IV.

foot trail provides easy access up an esker ridge providing sweeping views of

The developed trail is approximately .50 miles long. Unmaintained foot paths
continue from the end of the developed trail providing access to State of
Alaska lands and Landmark Gap Creek.

Berry picking is popular along this trail in August and September.

Off-highway vehicles (OHVs) are not allowed on this trail.

South Landmark Gap Trail

to stay on the designated trail. There is an undeveloped camp site at the
trail end near Dickey Lake.

to dry out at mile 2 and stays fairly dry until the end. Please stay on
designated trails, which are marked with green dotted signs. Red dotted signs

Southcentral Alaska. The river begins in the Alaska Range near Summit Lake and
flows south into the Copper River, which eventually empties into the Gulf of
Alaska between Cordova and Katalla. Several hundred lakes and ponds are
scattered throughout the spruce-dominated forest of the Gulkana River
watershed, providing abundant nesting areas for trumpeter swans and waterfowl.

Portions of the Gulkana River were designated for its wild character as part
of the National Wild and Scenic River system. The BLM asks that all users do
their part to help maintain the wild character of the Gulkana through low
impact camping techniques.

## Seasons and Climate

The Gulkana River running season generally begins in early to mid-June,
depending on ice breakup and precipitation. Average annual precipitation is 11
inches of rain and 48 inches of snow. July is commonly the wettest month.
Summer temperatures range from 35 F to occasional highs in the 80s. Be
prepared for cold, wet weather at any time. By mid-September, shorter days and
colder temperatures bring the river-running season to a quick end.

## History and Prehistory

The initial seven-mile stretch of the Middle Fork of the Gulkana River is
within the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District. This area is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. Several known prehistoric sites are
located within the corridor. The Ahtna Indians were the earliest known humans
to use the Gulkana River. Around 1910, miners used the West Fork and the
Middle Fork routes to reach the Denali Mining District, about 80 air-miles to
the west. NOTE: Collection or disturbance of any historic or prehistoric
remains is against the law.

## Vegetation and Wildlife

Spruce-hardwood forest is the major vegetation type along the Gulkana River.
You may see white and black spruce, birch, aspen and popular forests. The
understory includes willow, alder, rose, dwarf birch, cranberry, blueberry,
Labrador tea, dwarf dogwood, lichens and mosses.

Depending on location, you may see grizzly bear, black bear, moose, caribou,
beaver, coyote, otter, bald eagles, kingfishers, and assorted waterfowl. There
are more than 33 species of mammals and 59 species of birds known to live in
the Gulkana River basin.

## Fish

The Gulkana River's abundant fish makes it one of the most popular
sportfishing rivers in Alaska. Its tributaries contain rainbow
trout/steelhead, arctic grayling, king salmon (chinook), red salmon (sockeye),
whitefish, longnose suckers, and lamprey. The surrounding lakes have good
populations of lake trout, burbot and whitefish.

You can purchase an Alaska fishing license and view sportfishing regulations
online at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website or buy in person from
license agents throughout the state, including stores in Glennallen, Delta
Junction and Tok. Fishing is particularly heavy on weekends in June and July
when the kings are running.

mile 166.5 on the west side of the Richardson Highway. There is no developed
parking area here; however, there is a side road across from the trailhead.

June Lake

Located at mile 169.5 on the west side of the Richardson Highway, this is one
of the most highly used trails in the field office. The trail begins in a
state highway gravel pit and continues westward approximately 8 miles towards
the Gulkana Wild and Scenic River (WSR). Not only does this trail provide
access to the Gulkana WSR, it also provides outstanding views of Paxson Lake
and the surrounding hills. Primary use is motorized; however more people are
beginning to hike along the trail as its condition has improved. Please
respect all users of the trail.

Motorized travel within the Gulkana WSR corridor is limited to designated
trails. Designated trails are marked on the ground with green dot carsonite
markers. Undesignated trails are marked with red dot carsonite markers and are
not open for motorized travel. This trail is within the State of Alaska
Sourdough Controlled Use Area, so motorized hunting restrictions apply.
