paddles through sections with strong headwinds or cold, silty, glacial water.
The Lower Delta River to Black Rapids Glacier and beyond is only for the
experienced kayaker or whitewater rafter. With high-standing waves and glacial

foot trail provides easy access up an esker ridge providing sweeping views of
the Tangle Lakes and Amphitheatre Mts. The developed trail is approximately
.50 miles long. Unmaintained foot paths continue from the end of the developed

South Landmark Gap Trail

This trail starts at an improved trailhead on the south side of the Denali
Highway at milepost 16.2. The trail continues south for approximately 10 miles
through the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District (TLAD), to the Middle Fork of
the Gulkana River providing access to the Alphabet Hills and Dickey Lake.
Please remember that the Middle Fork of the Gulkana is a National Wild River
and users must stay on designated trails within the river corridor (1/2 mile
either side of the riverbank). This trail is primarily utilized by motorized
users. Major reconstruction has taken place on this trail in the last few
years to protect important resources and cultural sites. Please stay on
designated trails, which are marked with green dotted signs. Red dotted signs
within the TLAD are not open to motorized use, unless 6 inches of frozen
ground or 12 inches of snow cover are present. Highest use occurs mid-August
through September. Trail is 10 miles long

be yours with planning. The Denali Highway is 135 miles long and connects
Paxson on the Richardson Highway with Cantwell Junction on the Parks Highway.

Osar Lake Trail

The Delta River watershed is in the Alaska Range in Southcentral Alaska and
provides year-round recreational opportunities within its 150,000 acres of
land, 160 miles of streams, and 21 lakes. The Tangle River connects several of
the Tangle Lakes and then drains into the Delta River, which joins the Tanana
River, before flowing into the mighty Yukon River.

Season and Climate

River-running season generally begins in early to mid-June, depending on ice
breakup and precipitation. Average annual precipitation measured at Paxson is
11 inches of rain and 120 inches of snow. July is commonly the wettest month.
During the summer, temperatures range from 35 °F to 70 °F, with occasional
highs in the 80s. By mid-September the shorter daylight and colder
temperatures bring the river recreation season to an end.

History and Prehistory

Native people may have lived in this area as long ago as the end of the last
ice age (about 10,000 years ago). Approximately 226,660 acres in the Tangle
Lakes area are designated as the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District. This
area has hundreds of archaeological sites that are listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.

Vegetation

Vegetation ranges from arctic tundra to spruce-poplar forests. Grasses, sedges
and forbs grow on the highest, most exposed slopes and above the brush line.
Willows grow on moist lowland sites and in the many brushy draws draining the
side slopes.

Dwarf birch occupies drier sites with well-drained soils. Alder grows on steep
slopes of hillsides and canyon walls. Forests of white and black spruce grow
in small pockets along the river, and on some hillsides below an elevation of
3,200 feet. You will find open spruce-poplar forests on lowland sites along
the river and on some mid-slope hillsides.

Understory plants are varied and abundant. Fireweed, bistort, rose, mountain
avens, burnet, and shrubby cinquefoil are just some of the many plants in the
area. In August, many people travel to Tangle Lakes to pick blueberries. Other
harvestable berries in the Delta River area include crowberry, alpine
bearberry, cranberry and red currant.

Wildlife

Wildlife provides opportunities for hunting, trapping, photography and
viewing. Hunters seek moose, caribou, bear, Dall sheep, ptarmigan, waterfowl
and snowshoe hare. Trappers harvest beaver, fox, wolf, marten, lynx,
wolverine, otter, muskrat and mink.

Of the 110 species of birds identified in this area, most are summer residents
(May to September). Nesting bald eagles can be observed from Tangle Lakes to
the lower Delta River during the summers.

Wildlife viewing is best in the early morning.

Fish

Tangle Lakes and the Delta River contain grayling, round whitefish, lake
trout, burbot and longnose suckers. Most fishing is for grayling, but good
lake trout fishing is available in late winter and early spring.

Salmon are not found in the Delta River due to the 15-foot-high falls and the
heavy silt load entering from Eureka Creek.

You can purchase an Alaska fishing license and view sport fishing regulations
online at the  Alaska Department of Fish and Game  website or buy in person
from license agents throughout the state, including stores in Glennallen,
Delta Junction and Tok.

## Overview

Tangle Lakes Campground, located at MP 21.5 of the north side of the Denali
Highway, is situated within the Delta Wild and Scenic River corridor and the
Tangle Lakes Archaeological District boundary where over 10,000 years of human
use have been documented. The campground provides 45 accessible campsites and
4 walk-in sites and is equipped with water pumps, toilets and a boat launch.

The campground rests amid a series of long, narrow lakes known as the Tangle
Lakes that are connected by the Tangle River and form the headwaters of the
Delta River. The boat launch provides access to the lakes and is also the
designated put-in for the popular 30-mile Delta Wild & Scenic River float
trip.

The Tangle Ridge Hiking Trail (for non-motorized use only) extends out of the
campground and provides a 360 degree view of the stunning landscape.

Delta Wild and Scenic River

This trail provides access to BLM and State of Alaska Lands as well as the
Gakona River Valley. The trail steadily deteriorates the further you travel
from the highway. State of Alaska land is reached at mile 5.25 and the trail
continues to the Gakona River another 2 miles or so. During hunting season
(September 1- 20) it is not uncommon to have 30-50 vehicles at the trailhead.

This short foot trail provides access to June and Nita Lakes. It is located at
mile 166.5 on the west side of the Richardson Highway. There is no developed
parking area here; however, there is a side road across from the trailhead.
Trail is usually wet.
