## Overview

The South Cow Mountain OHV Management Area is located within the Mayacamas
Mountains, east of the city of Ukiah and west of the city of Lakeport, in
Northwestern California. The area offers beautiful views of Ukiah and Lake
County; pockets of old-growth fir; several species of oak; willows; over 31
miles of stream; 13 reservoirs; and habitat for blacktail deer, bear, wild
turkey, and other upland species.

South Cow Mountain OHV Management Area consists of approximately 23,000 acres
of public land that is managed for off-highway vehicle (OHV) use.

There are two developed OHV staging areas within South Cow Mountain with
graveled access roads accessible by two-wheel drive vehicles. Access roads
into these areas are narrow and winding. Travel trailers and large
recreational vehicles are not recommended.

Vehicle use within the recreation area is limited to the 94 miles of
designated roads and trails and is appropriate for motorcycle, Off-Highway
Vehicles (OHV), and 4-wheel drive vehicles. The trails are marked with
numbered signs displaying difficulty ratings (ranging from easy to extremely
difficult) and the recommended vehicle type depending on the width of the
trail.

Operation and maintenance of the facilities, roads and trails within the South
Cow Mountain OHV Management Area are funded in part, by the State of
California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division.

### **Camping**

vehicles must remain on designated routes and trails. The campgrounds afford
level parking, barbecues, fire pits, and picnic tables. Camping near springs
or guzzlers will prevent wildlife from using the water source. To insure you
do not displace wildlife and livestock camp at least 300 yards from any water
source. No potable water is available within the recreation area.

campfire permit. Seasonal fire restrictions may prohibit campfires during

and 2) precipitation falls 1/2 inch within 24 hours, or 1 inch within 72
hours. Typically, South Cow Mountain will reopen after 72 hours of no
precipitation.

## OFF HIGHWAY VEHICLE REGULATIONS

Visitors are responsible for knowing area rules and regulations. The
regulations are enforceable under U.S. Code of Federal Regulations and
violations are punishable with fines up to $1,000 and/or imprisonment for not
longer than 12 months.

  * Vehicle use is limited to roads and trails designated by fiberglass sign posts and stickers showing vehicles allowed on the route. Please do not ride on routes that are not signed. 
  * All off road vehicles must have a CA Green Sticker, Red Sticker or be legally registered in another state. 
  * All off road vehicles must be equipped with a properly installed U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor that is not modified. 
  * It is illegal to ride or drive under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or other drugs. 
  * State law requires the use of helmets while riding ATV's and motorcycles. 
  * State law does not allow passengers on ATV's unless the ATV was specifically designed for two or more people. 

All vehicles must meet state and federal noise standards. Appointments can be
made to test your OHV or motorcycle for sound compliance. Appointments may be
scheduled based on staff availability. Please call the Ukiah Field Office at

appointment.

South Cow Mountain Recreation Area

**NOTICE: 7/22/2024 – Due to the Ridge Fire, the public is advised to avoid
the area. People trying to access the Indian Valley Management Area will be
turned away by law enforcement for public safety.**

  
North of Highway 20, on the eastern edge of Lake County, the Indian Valley
Management Area offers an abundance of recreational possibilities. Rolling
chaparral covered hills dotted with oak and pine make an ideal setting for
hunting, camping, bicycling, hiking, and equestrian use. Popular game animals
include blacktail deer, black bear, quail, dove, and wild turkey. For
wildflower enthusiasts, pockets of the rare Indian Valley Brodiaea and Adobe
Lily can be found within the area.

The nearby Indian Valley Reservoir provides an excellent locale for fishing,
boating, and swimming, although the water level can drop quite low in the
summertime, and boats are limited to 10 MPH on the lake (5 MPH within 200
yards of shore). Yolo County offers a for-fee RV campground near the dam. For
specific information about the reservoir and campground, contact Yolo County
at (530) 662-0265. Indian Valley Management Area is part of the Berryessa Snow
Mountain Monument administered by BLM's Ukiah Field Office.

## Hunting, Fishing and Hiking

Hunting is permitted on the BLM lands. Since there are many private property
inholdings in the area, be aware of the boundary lines. For hunting
regulations, contact California Department of Fish and Game at (916) 358-2900.

Shooting within 150 yards of a developed site or dwelling, including
campgrounds, and shooting across or within 150 feet of any road or trail is
strictly prohibited.

Since this area hosts a wide range of recreation uses, you should familiarize
yourself with the area, and be sure of your target and background.

targets.

North of Highway 20, on the eastern edge of Lake County, the Indian Valley Management Area offers an abundance of recreational possibilities. Rolling chaparral covered hills dotted with oak and pine make an ideal setting for hunting, camping, bicycling, hiking, and equestrian use. Popular game animals include blacktail deer, black bear, quail, dove, and wild turkey. For wildflower enthusiasts, pockets of the rare Indian Valley Brodiaea and Adobe Lily can be found within the area.

The nearby Indian Valley Reservoir provides an excellent locale for fishing, boating, and swimming, although the water level can drop quite low in the summertime, and boats are limited to 10 MPH on the lake (5 MPH within 200 yards of shore). Yolo County offers a for-fee RV campground near the dam. For specific information about the reservoir and campground, contact Yolo County at (530) 662-0265. Indian Valley Management Area is part of the <a href="https://www.blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/california/berryessa-snow-mountain-national-monument" rel="nofollow">Berryessa Snow Mountain Monument</a> administered by BLM's <a href="https://www.blm.gov/office/ukiah-field-office" rel="nofollow">Ukiah Field Office</a>.

 

<h2>Hunting, Fishing and Hiking</h2>

Hunting is permitted on the BLM lands. Since there are many private property inholdings in the area, be aware of the boundary lines. For hunting regulations, contact California Department of Fish and Game at (916) 358-2900.

Shooting within 150 yards of a developed site or dwelling, including campgrounds, and shooting across or within 150 feet of any road or trail is strictly prohibited.

Since this area hosts a wide range of recreation uses, you should familiarize yourself with the area, and be sure of your target and background.

You must carry out all litter, including expended cartridges, shot shells and targets.

Visitors are responsible for knowing area rules and regulations. The regulations are enforceable under U.S. Code of Federal Regulations and violations are punishable with fines up to $1,000 and/or imprisonment for not longer than 12 months.

All vehicles must meet state and federal noise standards. Appointments can be made to test your OHV or motorcycle for sound compliance. Appointments may be scheduled based on staff availability. intersection. Turn left and proceed 4 miles to Indian Valley Reservoir. To
hike to site, cross Indian Valley dam to trailhead. Hike 2.5 miles to

approximately 26,000 acres of public land that is managed for non-motorized
use. The recreation area boosts almost 30 miles of hiking, biking, and
equestrian trails.

No off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is permitted on North Cow Mountain.

Cache Creek Wilderness

## Overview

This secluded, hilly expanse of oak woodlands, grasslands, and chaparral is a
combination of over 70,000 acres of BLM managed lands and 4,700 acres of State
and County lands. The Natural Area is traversed by Cache Creek, with its year-
round water flow. Elevation ranges from 3200 feet atop Brushy Sky High, down
to 600 feet in the eastern end of Cache Creek along State Route 16. Showcasing
the area is about 35 miles of the main fork of Cache Creek and 2.5 miles of
the north fork.

The Cache Creek Natural Area is a primitive area, closed to motorized
vehicles. There are no developed campgrounds or facilities. Non-hunting
(target) shooting is not allowed. Instead, the area is managed to improve
habitat for wildlife and rare plants, to protect cultural resource values, and
to offer primitive recreation opportunities, including wildlife viewing, river
running, hiking, equestrian use, hunting and fishing. On October 17, 2006,
President George W. Bush signed the Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage
Act, designating approximately 27,245 acres within the Cache Creek Natural
Area (CCNA) as the Cache Creek Wilderness Area. As a result of this
designation, bicycles are not permitted within the designated Wilderness Area.

Redbud Trail: From Interstate 5 at Williams, take Highway 20 west about 29
miles to the North Fork Cache Creek/Redbud Trailhead. The trailhead provides
parking, maps and information for hiking and equestrian access. (Or: From
Clearlake Oaks, travel east on State Highway 20 for 8 miles to the trailhead.

Judge Davis Trail: From Interstate 5 at Williams, take Highway 20 west about
20 miles to mile marker 46.07. There is a parking lot on the south side of the
highway. The trail parallels Highway 20 for the first 80 yards or so, then
cuts back into the hills. (Or: From Clearlake Oaks, travel east on State
Highway 20 for 17 miles to the trailhead.)

Cache Creek Ridge Trail: This trail can be accessed from two points. Judge
Davis Trailhead: From Interstate 5 at Williams, take Highway 20 west about 20
miles to mile marker 46.07. There is a parking lot on the south side of the
highway. (Or: From Clearlake Oaks, travel east on State Highway 20 for 17
miles to the trailhead.) Highway 16: From Interstate 5 at Williams, take State
Highway 20 west for about 19 miles to its junction with State Highway 16.
