China Ditch was a 33-mile project dug by 200 Chinese laborers in the 1890's to
supply water for gold mining operations. The China Ditch is over one-hundred
years old, but it is still clearly visible on the hillsides. A trip to the
ditch can help to re-live the history of the golden years of western mining.
The BLM, along with the Umpqua National Forest have set aside some 11 miles of
the ditch for preservation. The BLM maintains a 4000 foot section of the ditch
as a trail where the public can experience the history of Oregon's mining
days. The self-guided driving tour is yet another way of getting to know the
history of the China Ditch. Along the tour are informative signs that explain
the history of the ditch. Also, there are areas on the driving tour where
artifacts of the past are clearly visible, such as the hydraulic piping used
to transport water down the steep hillsides. At the end of the loop you reach
the town of Myrtle Creek. There, you can try your luck at panning in the
scenic and gold-laden South Umpqua River. The driving loop is accessible by
most vehicles depending on weather conditions. Be sure to have your camera in
hand, because there may be numerous wildlife photo opportunities.

## Overview

Millpond Pavilion is beautifully set along Rock Creek, which flows into the
Wild and Scenic North Umpqua River. The pavilion boasts a large picnic shelter
that holds up to 200 people with modern conveniences like drinking water, a
sink, large grills, electrical outlets and a fireplace.  
  
The flat grassy area is perfect for a casual game of soccer or a more special
occasion, like an outdoor wedding.  
  
In 1988 congress designated the North Umpqua River as a National Wild and
Scenic River, preserving and protecting it for outdoor enthusiasts. The river
is a tributary of the Umpqua River, which runs for over 200 miles from the
Cascade Range of southwestern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean.  
  

## Recreation

Guests can play kickball, softball or other sports in the field that's
included in the pavilion reservation.  
  
Adjacent to the pavilion are horseshoe pits and a playground to entertain
young ones. From the pavilion, visitors can follow a 1-mile interpretive trail
that passes through the site of an old lumber mill.

The pavilion is located inside the Tyee campground.<br><br>The Umpqua River Recreation Area has no shortage of recreational activities, ranging from horseback riding to birding and whitewater rafting. Wildlife viewing in the area includes deer, bald eagles, osprey and a herd of elk that populates the region in the fall. </p>

The Tyee Pavilion is perched on the banks of the Umpqua River in southwestern Oregon. It is only one of two rivers in Oregon with headwaters that begin high up in the Cascade Mountains, and it meanders down to the Pacific Ocean. The campground lies in a broad river canyon surrounded by deeply forested mountainsides.

The Umpqua River Scenic Byway offers breathtaking views and outstanding scenery. Along the byway lies the town of Elkton, well-known for it's wineries. <br/><br/>
West of Elkton is the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, where spotting majestic Roosevelt Elk near the roadway is almost guaranteed. The Pacific Coast is roughly 50 miles from Tyee.

River, Swiftwater Day-Use Area is a popular site to fish for steelhead, and
salmon. Deep fishing holes line the rock embankments under the Swiftwater
Bridge where anglers practice their skills and enjoy the day. A fishing
platform extends over the river to provide fishing access for those with
physical disabilities. Angling is allowed at Swiftwater, however, a few
hundred yards upriver (just above Rock Creek confluence), fishing is
restricted to fly-fishing only for the next 31 miles.

below, take a nature hike, or launch a raft or kayak on the North Umpqua
River. The site lies one-half mile downstream from Susan Creek Campground and
is connected by the Emerald Trail along the forested river bank. The trail
continues another 0.75 miles downstream, terminating at the pedestrian Tioga
Bridge where visitors can cross the mighty North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River.  
  
The day-use area also serves as a trailhead for the Susan Creek Falls Trail
which begins across Highway 138 from the parking lot. Susan Creek Falls is a
spectacular 50-foot waterfall which plummets over moss lined volcanic rock
cliffs and is located 0.8 mile up the trail from the Susan Creek Day-Use Area.

### Know Before You Go:

  * The recreation site is for day-use only; nearby Susan Creek Campground is open seasonally.
  * Adjacent to the day-use area is the Susan Creek Raft Put-In / Take-Out accommodates river access for whitewater enthusiasts.
  * The upper portion of the Susan Creek Falls Trail beyond the falls has a natural abundance of poison oak and is a strenuous hike.

Creek Back Country Byway. The route is 45-miles long and parallels Cow Creek
most of your journey. This rustic two-lane road is a great alternative to
Interstate 5 and connects the towns of Riddle and Glendale. Along the byway
are interpretive signs that talk about the history of the long forgotten town
of West Fork, the historic railroad, and gold mining in the area. The Island
Creek Day Use Area is a great stop to stretch your legs, pan for gold, or have
a creek-side picnic during your drive. Skull Creek Campground is a free first-
come, first served campground offering up 5 sites for weary travelers.  

## Know Before You Go:

  * The railroad is still active and follows the original Oregon and California Railroad Company grade built in 1869. 
  * Portions of the surrounding forest land were burned in the Douglas Complex Fire in 2013. 
  * Be respectful and do not trespass on private mining claims marked along the creek. 
  * Stay alert on the blind corners as logging trucks are common.

visitors can swim, fish, and pan for gold in Cow Creek. In autumn, enjoy the
