Andrews Cove Campground is conveniently located 15 minutes outside of Helen,
GA and offers 10 picturesque campsites along Andrews Creek. Hike the Andrews
Cove Trail or go fishing in the creek, all within walking distance of your
campsite. Get away from the crowds in Helen and enjoy a peaceful camping trip
in the north Georgia mountains!

## Recreation

The 1.9 mile Andrews Cove trail starts next to campsites 6 & 7 and is a great
place to get away from the crowds in nearby Helen. This trail connects to the
Appalachian Trail and there is a limited number of day use parking sites
located at the kiosk area. The surrounding area hosts a number of waterfalls
and hiking trails or you could take a short drive over to Anna Ruby Falls or
many of the nearby state parks.

includes a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern post. There is a toilet
faciilty adjacent to site #3.

Cooper Creek Campground is located in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest
along the banks of Cooper Creek in the North Georgia Mountains. The Campground
offers many recreation activities including camping, hiking, trout fishing,
and hunting. The campground is well kept and is a nice place for just a
weekend getaway or an extended stay. Most of the campsites are fairly spaced
apart so the privacy level is decent which makes for and enjoyable time. This
Recreation area is well known for great trout fishing year-round and you can
fish up and down the main creek or take the numerous trails along the bank of
the creek if you’re not having any luck at the campground. Please make your
way out to this beautiful campground for a pleasant and relaxing experience.

## Recreation

There are several hiking trails that start in or near the campground and all
are interconnected, so forming a loop is a breeze. The Yellow Mountain Trail
is the longest at 3.2 miles, so these are great little trails for taking the
kids or the inexperienced hiker on. The Duncan Ridge Trail isn’t far up the
road if you would like to do a more challenging hike.

## Facilities

Cooper Creek Campgound has two vault toilets. One near site 23 at the Cooper
Creek Loop and site 5 at Mulky. The campground has no flush toilets, showers,
hook-ups, or dumstations. Drinking water is provided only during peak season,
which is from April 1st though October 31st. Fees are reduced during off-peak
when the water is shutoff and winterized. (November 1st through March 31st.

Area. It spans more than 30,000 acres, and lies within the Chattahoochee
National Forest. This WMA offers hunting opportunities for deer, bear, turkey
and small game. The trails in this wildlife management area offer nearly eight
miles of easy to moderate hiking. The trails follow old logging trails and new
footpaths through a variety of hardwood, mixed pine and hardwood, and white
pine and hemlock forests.

minutes south. This campground has nine sites and is also a great place to
catch fish along the Toccoa River. This campground can also be booked on
recreation.gov or calling the reservation line. Deep Hole Recreation Area is
about twenty minutes south of Blue Ridge, Georgia on GA Highway 60. If you
turn down Rock Creek Road (FSR 69) you can find the Chattahoochee National
Fish Hatchery, Frank Gross Recreation Area, and access to the Ed Jenkins
National Recreation Area. Just a short drive down the highway are Woody Gap
Recreation Area, Chestatee Overlook, or Dockery Lake Recreation Area. Nearby
water falls to visit are are Helton Creek Falls, Dukes Creeks Falls, Long
Creek Falls, Fall Branch Falls, and Raven Cliffs Falls. Just a short drive and
located within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, the Brasstown Bald
Recreation Area & Visitor Center is a great place to visit. It is the highest
point in Georgia, rising 4,784 feet above sea level with a 360 degree view of
four states.

Towns within a short drive to visit are Blairsville, Helen, Blue Ridge, and
Dahlonega, GA. If you don't want to drive into town, visit the Cooper Creek
Store which is about 5 miles south of the campground as they'll have all your

This hidden gem of a campground is located on the bank of the Conasauga River
near the Tennessee/Georgia border. Iron Mountain trail is accessed directly
from the campground. This simple campground is quite the treat for you and
your four-legged friends. Day-use parking is available for those accessing the
trail, but not camping.

Cottonwood Patch Campground

## Overview

Cottonwood Patch Campground is a multi-use campground focused primarily on
equestrian camping, but welcomes traditional "car" camping. The campground is
located within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in the Alaculsy Valley
of the Cohutta Mountains in north Georgia. Cottonwood Patch Campground is a
quaint campground found along the Conasauga River, just above its junction
with the Jacks River. Mixed hardwood forest surrounds the campground. The
campground is partially shaded most of the summer with planted cottonwoods and
sawtooth oaks. Average daytime summer temperatures are in the mid-80s with
average daytime winter temperatures in the 50s.

In the late 1800s into the 1930s, Alaculsy Valley was a thriving community.
The valley contained homes, farms, a church, a post office, a grist mill, a
school, cemeteries, and possibly a furnace for smelting iron. Across the Jacks
River, in Tennessee, were other similar communities, a Civilian Conservation
Corps work camp, and the location of the original U.S. Forest Service facility
that managed the area. Some of the most development in the area was during the
logging boom of the early 1900s. This area was the main hub for logging
operations in the Cohutta Mountains. Train tracks followed the Conasauga and
Jacks Rivers deep into the mountains. Lumbermen in logging camps far back in
the mountains would cut timber and have it loaded onto flat cars. These loaded
railroad cars would be pulled by the powerful Shay locomotives owned by the
Conasauga River Lumber Company to its mill in Conasauga, Tennessee. Once an
area was logged, the camp buildings would be loaded up onto the flat cars by
small steam cranes and unloaded at the next area prepared for a camp. The
Conasauga Trail in Tennessee follows the old railroad bed downstream and the
Jacks River Trail in Georgia follows the old railroad bed upstream into the
Cohutta Wilderness.

Looking at the area today, one would never know such development once existed.
The U.S. Forest Service, along with partnerships with other agencies and
organizations, work together to manage the National Forest lands.

Recreation activities around the Cottonwood Patch Campground include camping,
picnicking, hiking, hunting, fishing, and horseback riding (visitors must
provide their own horses). Hunting and fishing regulations are set by the
Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

## Recreation

The Cottonwood Patch Campground not only serves as a place to rest and relax
by the campfire, but it serves as a base camp for activities located
throughout the National Forest, such as hiking, horseback riding, hunting,
fishing, and birdwatching.

Cottonwood Patch Campground is a popular area for equestrian users. The start
of the Iron Mountain trail is located in the campground. The trail can be used
by both horse riders and hikers. Horses are permitted on numbered Forest
Service Roads that are both open to traffic and gated. Please be aware and
mindful of vehicular traffic on Forest Service Roads.

Hunting is also a popular activity near the Cottonwood Patch Campground area.
The 96,583 acre Cohutta Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a cooperatively
managed area within the boundaries of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The
U.S. Forest Service and Georgia Department of Natural Resources work together
to provide hunters opportunities to harvest bear, deer, wild hog, and various
species of small game. The Georgia DNR maintains the majority of wildlife
openings/food plots, conduct wildlife surveys, and set the hunting
regulations. The U.S. Forest Service manages the receation facilities, roads,
vegetation, fire, vegetation, and general forest. When hiking or riding horses
during hunting seasons, wear blaze orange and be aware that hunters are out
legally participating in their version of recreational activities.

Amateur naturalists can have a great time seeking out non-game species, such
as birds, small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles, along with hundreds of
species of plants to check off their life lists.

## Facilities

**This campground and its facilities are maintained by dedicated volunteers of
the Back Country Horsemen of North Georgia (BCHNG) with the support of the
U.S. Forest Service. Please help this campground stay clean by cleaning up
after yourselves and your horses**.

This campground is gated and a combination is needed for access. This
combination will be given upon making a reservation. **Do Not Share** this
combination with anybody outside of your party. **Please keep the farm gate
closed and locked at all times.**

Cottonwood Patch Campground is an eight (8) site campground with one main
loop. The campground is flat and open, with large trees scattered throughout.
Sites are designated by a unit number at their entrance.

Each campsite has a graveled trailer parking spur, picnic table, fire ring,
and lantern post. Hitching rails and high line posts are located along the
perimeter of the campground. Two horse watering troughs are located in the
campground. Cold water is piped from a nearby stream to keep fresh water
flowing through the troughs. **This water is not meant for human
consumption.**

**Visitors must bring their own drinking water.** There is no potable water
located at this campground.

Campsites vary in size. There are three (3) sites that can accommodate two (2)
horse trailers with two trucks and five (5) sites that can accommodate a
single truck and trailer. Please respect the occupancy limits of the campsites
and park on the gravel parking spurs, these limits are set to help protect the
resource from damage and to provide access for future generations. Extra
vehicles are more than welcome to park in the parking lot adjacent to the
campground.

A free Day Use and Trailhead Parking Area is located just before entering the
campground and a free single unit picnic site is located across from the vault
toilet for day users.

## Natural Features

Cottonwood Patch Campground is located in the Georgia mountains near the
Tennessee/Georgia state line. It is surrounded by thousands of acres of
national forest, free flowing mountain rivers, and babbling streams. It is
located along the Conasauga River and near the border of the the Cohutta
Wilderness.

The Conasauga River watershed is one of the most ecologically diverse
watersheds in the United States. This watershed contains 76 species of fish,
more than the entire Columbia and Colorado Watersheds combined. Rare crayfish,
mollusks, and even the Federally Endangered Blue Shiner are found in the
Conasauga River. The U.S. Forest Service along with conservation partners
annually place spawning logs in the river to provide habitat for Blue Shiners.

Adjacent to Cottonwood Patch Campground is the 45,000 acre Cohutta/Big Frog
Wilderness (the largest Federally Designated Wilderness Area east of the
Mississippi River). The Cohutta Wilderness contains 91 miles of arduous
backpacking trails. The 1964 Wilderness Act requires Federally established
Wilderness Areas to maintain a wild character about them. Wilderness trails
are maintained by volunteers, Forestry Technicians, and partner organizations.
Directed by the Wilderness Act, trails are cleared using traditional hand
tools, such as crosscut saws and sling blades. The use of gas powered and
mechanized equipment is prohibited, even for forest managers in the Cohutta
Wilderness. These trails are minimally managed and minimally marked, keeping
with Wilderness character. These trails are not meant for simple strolls
through the forest. Trails are frequently blocked by trees and undergrowth,
making them difficult to follow at times. Orienteering skills using terrain
features, map, and compass are extremely important and essential in the
Cohutta Wilderness, as GPS is unreliable and not recommended.

An array of colorful wildflowers can be found throughout spring and summer
months. In spring, the beautiful purple/blue flowers of Virginia Bluebells can
be found in large colonies along the Conasauga River. Numerous trilliums
carpet the forest floor. Wild Geraniums, Blood Root, Mayapple and many other
wildflowers provide flashes of color to the the new spring forest. Summer
gives way to asters, rhododendron, and other flowers, providing a splash of
color until the changing leaves provide the color in fall. Please only look at
wildflowers, do not pick them.

**Conasauga River Blue Hole:**

The Conasauga River has an array of colorful and unique fish species. The best
way to see them is to get in the water with them. The Cherokee National Forest
in Tennessee maintains a small picnic area and snorkeling area located 1.5
miles north of Cottonwood Patch Campground in Tennessee. Visitors can either
snorkel on their own (provide your own equipment) or take a guided tour with
the Cherokee National Forest. For guided tours and more infomation visit the

Directions: Turn left out of the campground onto Forest Service Road 16.
Follow FSR 16 for 3/4 mile. Cross the metal Jacks River Bridge and turn left
onto Sheeds Creek Road. Follow Sheeds Creek road 3/4 mile until reaching the
entrance to the Conasauga River Blue Hole parking lot on the left.

**Sumac Creek Shooting Range (Digital Fee Area, see Recreation.gov page):** A
U.S. Forest Service shooting range provided to hone your shooting skills. You
must provide your own firearm, ammunition, and targets. For more information

Directions: Leaving the campground, turn right onto Forest Road 16. Follow
this road for approximately 7 miles. The entrance to the shooting range is on
the left where gravel road turns back into pavement.

<p>This campground is gated and a combination is needed for access.  This combination will be given upon making a reservation.  <strong>Do Not Share</strong> this combination with anybody outside of your party.  <strong>Please keep the farm gate closed and locked at all times.</strong></p>
<p>Cottonwood Patch Campground is an eight (8) site campground with one main loop.  The campground is flat and open, with large trees scattered throughout.  Sites are designated by a unit number at their entrance.   </p>
<p>Each campsite has a graveled trailer parking spur, picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post.  Hitching rails and high line posts are located along the perimeter of the campground.  Two horse watering troughs are located in the campground.  Cold water is piped from a nearby stream to keep fresh water flowing through the troughs.  <strong>This water is not meant for human consumption.</strong> </p>
<p><strong>Visitors must bring their own drinking water.  </strong>There is no potable water located at this campground.   </p>
<p>Campsites vary in size.  There are three (3) sites that can accommodate two (2) horse trailers with two trucks and five (5) sites that can accommodate a single truck and trailer.  Please respect the occupancy limits of the campsites and park on the gravel parking spurs, these limits are set to help protect the resource from damage and to provide access for future generations.  Extra vehicles are more than welcome to park in the parking lot adjacent to the campground.</p>
<p>A free Day Use and Trailhead Parking Area is located just before entering the campground and a free single unit picnic site is located across from the vault toilet for day users. </p>

<h2>Natural Features</h2>
<p>Cottonwood Patch Campground is located in the Georgia mountains near the Tennessee/Georgia state line.  It is surrounded by thousands of acres of national forest, free flowing mountain rivers, and babbling streams.  It is located along the Conasauga River and near the border of the the Cohutta Wilderness. </p>
<p>The Conasauga River watershed is one of the most ecologically diverse watersheds in the United States.  This watershed contains 76 species of fish, more than the entire Columbia and Colorado Watersheds combined.  Rare crayfish, mollusks, and even the Federally Endangered Blue Shiner are found in the Conasauga River.  The U.S. Forest Service along with conservation partners annually place spawning logs in the river to provide habitat for Blue Shiners. </p>
<p>Adjacent to Cottonwood Patch Campground is the 45,000 acre Cohutta/Big Frog Wilderness (the largest  Federally Designated Wilderness Area east of the Mississippi River). The Cohutta Wilderness contains 91 miles of arduous backpacking trails.  The 1964 Wilderness Act requires Federally established Wilderness Areas to maintain a wild character about them.  Wilderness trails are maintained by volunteers, Forestry Technicians, and partner organizations.  Directed by the Wilderness Act, trails are cleared using traditional hand tools, such as crosscut saws and sling blades.  The use of gas powered and mechanized equipment is prohibited, even for forest managers in the Cohutta Wilderness. These trails are minimally managed and minimally marked, keeping with Wilderness character.  These trails are not meant for simple strolls through the forest.  Trails are frequently blocked by trees and undergrowth, making them difficult to follow at times.  Orienteering skills using terrain features, map, and compass are extremely important and essential in the Cohutta Wilderness, as GPS is unreliable and not recommended. </p>
<p>An array of colorful wildflowers can be found throughout spring and summer months.  In spring, the beautiful purple/blue flowers of Virginia Bluebells can be found in large colonies along the Conasauga River.  Numerous trilliums carpet the forest floor.  Wild Geraniums, Blood Root, Mayapple and many other wildflowers provide flashes of color to the the new spring forest.  Summer gives way to asters, rhododendron, and other flowers, providing a splash of color until the changing leaves provide the color in fall.  Please only look at wildflowers, do not pick them.</p>

<p>The Conasauga River has an array of colorful and unique fish species.  The best way to see them is to get in the water with them.  The Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee maintains a small picnic area and snorkeling area located 1.5 miles north of Cottonwood Patch Campground in Tennessee.  Visitors can either snorkel on their own (provide your own equipment) or take a guided tour with the Cherokee National Forest. <p>Directions:  Turn left out of the campground onto Forest Service Road 16.  Follow FSR 16 for 3/4 mile.  Cross the metal Jacks River Bridge and turn left onto Sheeds Creek Road.  Follow Sheeds Creek road 3/4 mile until reaching the entrance to the Conasauga River Blue Hole parking lot on the left. </p>

<p>Directions:  Leaving the campground, turn right onto Forest Road 16.  Follow this road for approximately 7 miles.  The entrance to the shooting range is on the left where gravel road turns back into pavement.</p>

## Overview

Deep Hole Recreation Area is a U.S. Forest Service Campground and Day Use Area
located approximately 2 hours north of Atlanta in the North Georgia Mountains
of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Deep Hole offers visitors year-round
recreation opportunities such as camping, fishing, picnicking, and a launch
area for tubing and kayaking along the Toccoa River. Trout fishing is popular
here in North Georgia so camping at Deep Hole adjacent to the Toccoa River is
an amazing opportunity for avid fisherman. Nine campsites are neatly arranged
in one loop and walking distance to the Toccoa River. Campsites 5 & 9 are
directly next to the River. The climate here is fairly mild and generally
offers all four seasons, so it's a wonderful place to relax and experience
each of these throughout the year. North Georgia is a playground for wildlife
watchers. We have an abundance of Deer, Turkey, Bear, and small Furbearers.
There is a $5.00 Day Use Fee for those that only are not staying overnight,
and are looking to fish, kayak, picnic, or tube down the Toccoa River. If you
are camping, you are excluded from this fee. If you need to get away from the
hustle and bustle of everyday life, please visit Deep Hole Recreation Area.

## Recreation

This campground is located along the banks of a big turn of the Toccoa River
just north of Suches, GA. The primary attraction to this area is the Toccoa
River, with immediate access for fishing and boating. The Chattahoochee
National Fish Hatchery is only 5.5 miles away and they stock this area with
trout weekly during peak camping season. Cooper Creek and Rock Creek are
within ten minutes of Deep Hole Recreation Area, which offers visitors more
areas to trout fish and more camping opportunities in beautiful North Georgia.
Deep Hole is the beginning of the Toccoa River Canoe Trail, offering 13.8
miles of moderate paddling to the take-out at Sandy-Bottoms Recreation Area.

## Facilities

Deep Hole has one double vault toilet within the campground with sites 1, 2,
3, 4, and 9 being the closest to the restroom. There is no water, hook-ups,
elecricity, or dump station.

Deep Hole Recreation Area is about twenty minutes south of Blue Ridge, Georgia
on GA Highway 60. If you turn down Rock Creek Road (FSR 69) you can find the
Chattahoochee National Fish Hatchery, Frank Gross Recreation Area, and access
to the Ed Jenkins National Recreation Area. Drive just a drive down the
highway is Woody Gap Recreation Area, Chestatee Overlook, or Dockery Lake
Recreation Area. Nearby water falls to visit are are Helton Creek Falls, Dukes
Creeks Falls, Long Creek Falls, Fall Branch Falls, and Raven Cliffs Falls.

hikes to our nearby waterfalls. The campground is situated along Frogtown
Creek with at an elevation of 2,080 feet above sea level, under a dense forest
of deciduous and evergreen trees. 23 campsites are neatly arranged in two
loops(upper and lower), with each loop having creek sites. The climate here is
fairly mild and generally offers all four seasons, so it is a wonderful place
to relax and experience each of these throughout the year. North Georgia is a
playground for wildlife watchers. An abundance of Deer, Turkey, Bear and,
small furbearers can be seen as well as bird watching. If you need to get away
from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, come to Desoto Falls.

## Recreation

The primary attractions to this area are the two waterfalls along Frogtown
Creek, which lead from the wooden bridge across from the Host Site. This hike
is relatively short, kid-friendly distance and moderate elevation change make
it one of North Georgia’s most popular waterfall hikes. .25 hike to lower
falls and .75 to the upper falls. The trail hikes through several large
exposed rock outcrops, beautiful rhododendron, and under the shade of several
enormous old-growth pine trees with their wide trunks reaching high into the
forest canopy above. The waterfall’s newly built observation deck makes a
great spot for a mid-hike rest or picnic, and a great place to soak up the
waterfall’s beauty.

Note: slippery rocks and fast moving water can be extremely dangerous! Please
don’t climb, stand on, swim near, or jump from any waterfall.

## Facilities

April 1st through October 31st, the campground has drinking water, warm
showers, and flush toilets. The bathhouse has warm water outdoor showers
connected to a flush facility, and is located on the lower loop. Hydrants are
centrally located throughout the entire campground for your convenience.
Centrally located in the upper loop is a vault toilet, which is a short walk
from most campsites. **NOTE: There are no hookups or a dumpstation avaliable
in the campground. From November 1st - March 31st, fees are reduced because no
water is available.**

A dumpster is located near site #3 for all bagged trash to be disposed of.
Amenities include a picnic area, picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets,
lantern posts, drinking water, flush toilets, water hydrants, water front
sites, and garbage service.

Desoto Falls is part of the Chattahoochee National Forest and is located in a
650-acre (2.6 km2) area designated as the Desoto Falls Scenic Area. This area
of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia make up part of the Appalachian
Mountain range stretching all the way to Canada. The hardwood coves, rushing
waterfalls, creeks, and steep canyons are crisscrossed with abundant trails
for hiking and fishing. During the Month of October, North Georgia’s trees put
on a vibrant show. Summer's dark greens change to brilliant reds, oranges and
yellows which makes the camping atmosphere amazing. Thousands make the yearly
trek into the mountains near Desoto Falls for a front row seat.

Just 1.5 miles north on 19/129 is Neels Gap and the Appalachian Trail. Drive
just a short piece down to Byron Herbert Reece parking area on the left, and
the Appalachian Trail can be easily accessed there. Nearby water falls to

Dockery Lake Recreation Area is a U.S. Forest Service Campground located

Chattahoochee National Forest. Dockery Lake is nestled deep within the
mountains 12 miles north of Dahlonega, GA. Dockery Lake Recreation Area offers
camping, picnicking and fishing for all ages. Dockery Lake Campground is small
and located right along the banks of Dockery Lake. The campground is situated
under a dense forest of deciduous and evergreen trees which brings plenty of
shade in the summer time. 11 campsites are neatly arranged within close
proximity to the Lake and the Day Use area (no fee). The climate here is
fairly mild and generally offers all four seasons, so it is a wonderful place
to relax and experience each of these throughout the year. North Georgia is a
playground for wildlife watchers. An abundance of Deer, Turkey, Bear and,
small furbearers can be seen as well as bird watching. If you need to get away
from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, come to Dockery Lake Recreation
Area.

Lakeshore Trail - 0.5 mile easy loop around lake.

Dockery Lake Trail( LEADS FROM DAY USE AREA) - 3.5 miles leads to the
Appalachian Trail in Miller Gap.

campground. 1 flush facility in the campground and 1 vault toilet in the day

Dockery Lake campground and day-use area is constructed next to a small pond.
The area, operated by the U.S. Forest Service of the Blue Ridge Ranger
Disctict in the Chattahoochee National Forest, is nestled among the Cedar
Ridge range of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Situated on a small tributary to
Waters Creek, Dockery Lake is a 6-acre (24,000 m2) man-made lake stocked with
trout. During the Month of October, North Georgia’s trees put on a vibrant
show. Summer's dark greens change to brilliant reds, oranges and yellows which
makes the camping atmosphere amazing. Thousands make the yearly trek into the
mountains near Dockery Lake for a front row seat.

The campground is situated under a dense forest of deciduous and evergreen trees which brings plenty of shade in the summer time. 11 campsites are neatly arranged within close proximity to the Lake and the Day Use area (no fee). The climate here is fairly mild and generally offers all four seasons, so it is a wonderful place to relax and experience each of these throughout the year. North Georgia is a playground for wildlife watchers. An abundance of Deer, Turkey, Bear and, small furbearers can be seen as well as bird watching. If you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, come to Dockery Lake Recreation Area. </p>

Situated on a small tributary to Waters Creek, Dockery Lake is a 6-acre (24,000 m2) man-made lake stocked with trout. During the Month of October, North Georgia’s trees put on a vibrant show. Summer's dark greens change to brilliant reds, oranges and yellows which makes the camping atmosphere amazing. Thousands make the yearly trek into the mountains near Dockery Lake for a front row seat.  </p>

fairly mild and generally offers all four seasons, so it's a wonderful place
to relax and experience each of these throughout the year. North Georgia is a

We have plenty of recreational opportunities that are not far from Frank
Gross. If you enjoy hiking, The Benton MacKaye trail is north of Frank Gross;
this trail crosses the Toccoa River on a suspension bridge that is 260 feet
long. Fishing in Rock Creek and Mill Creek for stocked and wild trout is
popular. The Chattahoocee National Fish Hatchery is also located on Rock Creek
approximately 1/4 mile downstream from Frank Gross. The facility offers an
informational visitor kiosk, outdoor raceway viewing, picniking, and an
Environmental Education Center. Hiking Trails within a 30 minute drive - The
Appalachian Trail is approximately 4 miles south at the intersection of FS
Road 42 and FS Road 69. The Benton MacKaye Trail crosses FS Road 333
approximately 4 miles north.

## Overview

The Jacks River Fields Campground is a seven site campground located in the
Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia on the Conasauga Ranger District of the
Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. **This campground accomodates horses and
mules.** This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only.
Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and
claim a site. Once on-site, you can pay for your campsite(s) by scanning a QR
code using the Recreation.gov mobile app or by following instructions for
depositing cash or checks in the fee deposit box. Download the free
Recreation.gov mobile app on Android or iOS prior to your arrival as some
remote areas have limited or no cellular service.

Located along the South Fork of the Jacks River, the Jacks River Fields
Campground sits at an elevation of 2700' and surrounded by mixed hardwoods,
hemlock, and rhododendron. Wildlife such as bear, deer, and wild turkey can be
found in the surrounding forest. Wildflowers are abundant throughout the
mountains during spring, summer, and fall.

From the late 1800s into the early 1900s this area was a thriving community
known as the Upper Jacks River Community, complete with home-sites, a church,
and possibly a grist mill. One of those houses was later turned into a Federal
game warden station. The game warden was tasked with patrolling the newly
established national forest. The community long gone, including the game
warden station, visitors can now enjoy a quiet camping experience deep in the
mountains. The multi-use South Fork Trail is located adjacent to the
campground, allowing for horses, bikes, and hikers.

## Recreation

**Hiking and Horseback Riding:**

This campground is located adjacent to the South Fork Trail, which is a multi-
use trail for hiking, biking, and horse riding. The Cohutta Wilderness is
nearby and allows for arduous overnight backpacking trips along the Jacks and
Conasauga Rivers.

**Hunting:**

Hunting for bear, deer, and wild hogs is a long standing fall tradition in the
North Georgia Mountains. This campground is located within the Cohutta
Wildlife Management Area, a cooperatively managed area between the U.S. Forest
Service and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The WMA is located
completely within the boundaries of the Chattahoochee National Forest.

**Birding:**

During spring and summer, songbirds abound. Beginning in early spring,
neotropical migrant birds are found traveling from South America and Mexico to
their breeding grounds in the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Canada,
many are only encountered during migration. For many birds, this area is the
only place in the Southern Appalachians they breed, making for a unique
experience for forest visitors.

**Wildflowers:**

The Southern Appalachians are one of the most diverse regions in the world for
plants. Many of these plants produce flowers which are brightly colored,
luring in pollinators such as native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Other flowers are hidden beneath the leaf litter, unnoticed by the majority of
visitors, yet noticed by the beetles that pollinate the unique flowers. These
flowers eventually turn into fruits and seeds, feeding birds and small
mammals.

## Facilities

Tent pads, parking spurs, picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts are
provided at each campsite. Bear-Proof trash cans are centrally located in the
campground. There is no running water, no electricity, and no dumping station
located at this campground. A vault toilet is provided for visitors.

A horse trailer day use parking area is located at the back of the recreation
area, along with horse corrals and hitching posts.

geography and elevation changes of the Southern Appalachian Mountains has
enabled aquatic species in small watersheds to attain extreme levels of
diversity compared to the much larger western watersheds. Salamanders,
mussels, snails, crayfish, and other invertebrates show similar levels of
diversity.

## Overview

The Lake Conasauga Recreation Area is a remote recreation area located within
the Chattahoochee National Forest in northwest Georgia. Getting to Lake
Conasauga involves a beautiful forested drive along 15 or more miles of
graveled mountain roads through the Cohutta Mountains. Visitors may
occasionally see bear, deer, and turkeys on their drive. Wildflowers can be
found blooming from February through November in various parts of the
mountains.

Completed in 1940, Lake Conasauga was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC) under the guidance of the U.S. Forest Service. Tucked between Grassy
Mountain and Little Bald Mountain, the 17 acre lake sits at an elevation of
3,150 feet, making it the highest elevation lake in the State of Georgia. At
this elevation, air temperatures at Lake Conasauga are usually 10-15 degrees
cooler than the surrounding valleys, allowing for a comfortable camping
experience even in the middle of summer.

Outdoor activities at the Lake Conasauga Recreation Area include camping,
hiking, boating, fishing, picnicking, and swimming.

## Recreation

A swimming and picnic area with a picnic shelter is located across the lake
opposite the campground. A swimming dock is provided for visitors to take a
swim in the cold natural spring waters of Lake Conasauga. There is no
lifeguard on duty, so please swim at your own risk.

Hiking trails include the Lake Loop Trail (1 mile loop), the Songbird Trail
(2.8 mile loop), and the Tower Trail (4 miles round trip).

A small boat launch provides boating access for canoes, kayaks, and small
boats (electric motors only). Fishermen may catch bass, bream, and even an
occasional catfish. A fishing dock is provided. The Lake Loop Trail provides
various locations along the shoreline for fishermen to cast. A Georgia fishing
license is required for those 16 and older.

## Facilities

The Lake Conasauga Campground is a 30 site campground with two camping loops.
The Lower Loop is located within view of the lake. The Upper Loop is a
forested loop above the lake.

Each campsite has a gravel parking spur, a gravel tent pad, picnic table,
lantern post, and a fire ring with a grill. There is a restroom with flush
toilets located in both camping loops (no showers, no hot water). Water
hydrants are located throughout the campground. There is no electricity at
this campground. There is no dump station at this campground. Cell phone
service is very limited.

A cabin for the campground host is located in the campground. This cabin is a
private residence for the host and is not an office or a store. Please respect
their space and privacy.

Driving on steep, narrow, winding, mountain roads is required to get to this
campground. Tents, pop-up campers, and travel trailers under 25 feet are
recommended for this campground due to access and campsite size limitations.

GPS is not recommended for navigating to this area as satellite service is
regularly interrupted by mountains and trees.

4.5 miles. Turn right and continue following Forest Road 68 for 3.5 miles and
turn left onto Forest Road 90. Follow Forest Road 90 for 2 miles and turn left

At the rear of the campground, visitors will find the trailhead for the
popular Angel Falls/Panther Falls Hiking Trail (trail length 1.7 miles). The
swim area has two picnic tables, a roped-off area for swimmers and restrooms.
A boat launch area and a fishing peer are near the swimming area, Lake Rabun
is home to bass, bream, perch, trout and catfish. Check State regulations
before you fish.

The campground offers 80 campsites, 21 of these campsites have electricity and
a majority have water. The restroom facilities include hot water showers. Each
campsite includes a grill, picnic table and lantern post. The campground
features one group campsite which includes five campsites. Firewood can be

## Overview

This North Georgia mountain mecca has something for everyone, swimming,
camping, picnicking, hiking, biking (on and off road), fishing and boating
(electric, wind, or human powered), wildlife, foliage, camping,

## Recreation

The Lake Russell Recreation Area maintains a swim beach for those hot summer
days, along with plenty of picnic spaces with tables and grills to help fuel
your day in the mountains. No dogs on the beach please, and no shore fishing
within the swim area boundary.

The Nancytown Recreation area adjoins the Lake Russell Rec Area and includes
several popular trailheads as well as the smaller Nancytown Lake. Parking
Access at Nancytown is included for day use visitors to the Lake Russell
Recreation Area, and registered campers. No gas motors allowed on Lake
Russell, nor the adjacent Nancytown Lake.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources stocks trout in Nancytown Lake
four times between March and August. While the Broad River coursing through
the adjacent WMA also produces trout for the hearty angler. Many other fish
species can be found in both Nancytown Lake and Lake Russell.

Russell Recreation Areas, the highly motivated aim for the access road and
climb the hill back toward Mt. Airy, Georgia. The nearest town, Mt. Airy
includes convenience stores nearby where you can find bait and tackle, ice,
drinks, and various sundries to complement your visit.

The campground offers 42 campsites for tents and RVs, however there are no
hookups. Campsites have a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern hook. Water is
available throughout the campground via water hydrants. Bathrooms have flush

area, picnic shelter/picnic area, biking, boat launch, fishing dock, and near
Loop A of the campground is a dump station.

Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area offers visitors year-round recreation
opportunities including camping, picnicking, boating, swimming and hiking, all
centered around beautiful Lake Winfield Scott.  
  
The area is situated high in a mountain valley within the Chattahoochee-Oconee
National Forest, approximately 80 miles from Atlanta, Georgia. The facility
offers a rental cabin with electricity and water, as well as sites for tent
and RV camping.

## Recreation

The Lake Winfield Scott Beach includes a designated swimming area, picnic
tables, a bathhouse, pavilions (by reservation only), a playground and trash
bins.  
  
Day-use hiking trails are found within the recreation area, ideal for a short
stroll. A 0.4-mile trail parallels the lakeshore. In addition, the 1-mile
Jarrard Gap Trail and 2.7-mile Slaughter Creek Trail both begin within the
recreation area and connect to the Appalachian Trail.  
  
Lake Winfield Scott is open to hand-powered and electric motor boats only.
Fishing for catfish, trout, perch, brim and bass is a popular activity. See
the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for a complete listing of
freshwater fishing regulations for the lake. A boat ramp and accessible
fishing dock provide year-round lake access.

## Facilities

Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area's cabin is a short walk to the lake, and
can accommodate up to 12 people. A sleeping area upstairs is furnished with
six twin beds and three double beds, all with mattresses. Visitors must
provide their own bed and bath linens.  
  
The main floor houses a living room with wood stove (no wood provided), dining
room and kitchen, which is equipped with a refrigerator, electric stove,
microwave, assorted pots and pans, utensils, plates, glasses, cups and
flatware. The bathroom has a flush toilet, shower and an electric heater.  
  
Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area's campground consists of 31 campsites
configured in two loops for tent or RV camping. Showers, flush and vault
toilets, grills, picnic tables and lantern posts are provided. The campground
has no dump station. Nearby Vogel State Park has a dump station with a nominal
fee.  
There are water and electric hookups on Site #12, 13, 14 and 15.

The recreation area includes 18-acre Lake Winfield Scott, which forms the
headwaters of Cooper Creek. The lake was built by the Civilian Conservation
Corps in the 1930s.  
  
A variety of wildlife makes its home in the surrounding forest, including
deer, bear, wild turkey, grouse and songbirds.

Wilderness. This 13-site developed campground is as close as it gets to a
dispersed camping experience with amenities. This clandestine campground is
best known for its plethora of opportunities for camping, fishing, hiking,
hunting, and simply basking in the light of the natural world. Low Gap
Campground is located only a few miles from Georgia's much-loved vacation
destination, the alpine village of Helen. A trip to this campground is sure to
make memories, be sure to pack a camera and take some home with you.

## Recreation

The area is host to some of the most scenic views. Or you can take a drive
along FS 44 Road (Upper Chattahoochee River Road) and see some waterfalls that
are along the roadway and or others a short walk in nearby areas. If hiking is
in your plans the National Scenic Appalachian Trail has two main entry points
near the area. Other favorite nearby hiking areas are Ravens Cliff Falls,
Dukes Creek Falls, and Anna Ruby Falls. All are only a short drive from this
campground. If you like wetting fishing lines there is fishing is available in
the campground, and along the nearby Chattahoochee River, whose headwaters are
in the Mark Trail Wilderness. Be sure you are following the state fishing
licensing regulations. Drive into "Alpine" Helen try tubing and swimming on
the river, or explore the unique shops and restaurants of Georgia's own
Bavarian village.

areas in the campground with bear resistant trash bins. There is one chemical
vault toilet located across the bridge at the back of the campground. Drinking
water from our fresh well is located at the back of the campground and has a
seasonal hand pump to draw out the water.

Low Gap Campground is located in the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area of
the Chattahoochee National Forest. Named for Low Gap Creek that flows through
the campground, this creek is stocked with trout weekly from April to July by
the Georgia DNR. This National Forest is rich in history and is said to be a
hiker's paradise with its winding trails, scenic mountains, and rolling hills.

## Nearby Attractions

The alpine village of Helen, Georgia is located a few miles south of the
campground where there are a host of water and non-water activities for all to
enjoy. Anna Ruby Falls, Dukes Creek Falls, and Ravens Cliff are all a short
distance away for those who love to hike. Other nearby recreation activities
include the National Scenic Appalachian Trail (A.T.) and over the gap is
Brasstown Bald the highest mountain peak in Georgia rising to 4784 feet above
sea level.

## Overview

The Morganton Point Recreation Area is located in the Blue Ridge Ranger
District, within the beautiful northeast Georgia mountains. Pristine water and
scenic views draw visitors from around the state and region.

## Recreation

The Morganton Point Recreation Area offers visitors year-round recreation
opportunities including camping, picnicking, boating, swimming and hiking, all
centered around beautiful Lake Blue Ridge. The lake is open to motor boats and
jet skis, as well as non-motorized watercraft.  
  
Fishing in the 3,290-acre lake is a popular activity for visitors to the
Morganton Point Campground. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of bass and
other fish. Visitors are encouraged to check with the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources for a complete listing of freshwater fishing regulations for
Lake Blue Ridge.  
  
Day-use hiking trails, including one that parallels the lakeshore, are ideal
for short, relaxing strolls through the forest. The Appalachian and Benton
MacKave trails pass through Fannin County and are easily accessed near the
campground.

The campground offers campsites available for tent and RV camping. Several
walk-in sites are for tents only. Some sites are available on a first-come,
first-served basis. Each site is equipped with tables and campfire rings with
grills. Accessible showers and drinking water are also provided. Beach access

## Overview

The Pocket Recreation Area is located within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National
Forest in the ridges and valleys of northwest Georgia. The campground sits in
a low lying geographical area between Horn and Mill mountains. This low lying
area was formed by limestone dissolving, leaving the ridges above and valleys
below. These ridges are rich in iron ore "pockets" giving this area its name.
Deer and turkeys thrive in the surrounding forest. Spring wildflowers and
autumn colors abound, showcasing the beauty of the region. Nearby trails and
overlooks allow visitors to enjoy the National Forest from different
perspectives.

The Pocket area is rich in cultural and historical history. In the mid-1800s
until the Great Depression in the 1930s, this area consisted of two
communities, Pocket and Zone. These communities consisted of farms, churches,
home places, a grist mill, a saw mill, and a general store. Between 1938 and
1942, the Pocket Recreation Area was the site of a thriving Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC) work camp for Company 3435. The men of the CCC, under
the guidance of the U.S. Forest Service, had a tremendous impact on the area.
They were involved in building roads, bridges, erosion control, tree planting,
fighting wildfires, and the construction of recreation sites. The CCC played
an instrumental part in helping local farmers with erosion control and road
maintenance. Remnants of the camp can be found throughout the Pocket
Recreation Area. These remnants include foundations for buildings, drainage
trenches, retaining walls, and spring box in the picnic area.

Activities in the Pocket Recreation Area include camping, picnicking, hiking,
and trout fishing in nearby Johns Creek.

The Pocket Campground is a quiet campground which not only serves as a place
to rest and relax by the campfire, but serves as a base camp for activities
located within other parts of the National Forest.

Adjacent to the campground is the Pocket Picnic Area, complete with tables,
grills, a reservable picnic shelter, and a vault toilet. The trail heads for
the Pocket Loop Trail and Pocket Interpretive Trail are located in the picnic
area. A Civilian Conservation Corps spring box is located in the creek,
releasing cold water from deep below the surface. This is a great place to
wade and cool off during long summer days.

Hiking the 1.5 mile Pocket Interpretive Trail contains signs to provide an
educational walk through multiple types of habitat where an array of wildlife
and plant species can be found. The 2.5 mile Pocket Loop Trail provides a
similar, but longer experience, sharing some of the same tread with the
interpretive trail.

Trout fishing in Johns Creek (less than a mile away) is a great place to wet a
line and fill one's creel. Georgia DNR fishing regulations apply.

A host site is located at the entrance to the campground. This site is a host
residence, not a store or office.

Campsites vary in size, accommodating various types of camping opportunities
from tents up to 28 foot travel trailers. The roads leading to the Pocket
Campground are paved and easy to travel.

allowed to be driven on roads designated as Forest Service Roads (**National
Forest Roads ARE NOT part of the county road system**). Visitors must provide
their own vehicles at this facility.

Leaving the campground, turn right onto Pocket Road. Follow Pocket Road for
7.3 miles then turn left onto GA-136. After 1/10th of a mile turn right onto
GA-201. Follow GA-201 for approximately 5.5 miles and veer left onto Old

**Houston Valley OHV Area (Fee Area, see Recreation.gov page****Houston Valley
OHV Area****):** A U.S. Forest Service ATV trail system. This is a designated
area with 25 miles of various levels of trails where visitors can legally ride
dirt bikes and ATVs (under 50 inches). On the Chattahoochee-Oconee National
Forest ATVs and dirt bikes are limited to designated OHV trails and not
allowed to be driven on roads designated as Forest Service Roads (National
Forest Roads ARE NOT part of the county road system). Visitors must provide
their own vehicles at this facility.

Leaving the campground, turn right onto Pocket Road. Follow Pocket Road for
7.3 miles then turn left onto GA-136. After 1/10th of a mile turn right onto
GA-201. Follow GA-201 for approximately 5.5 miles and veer left onto Old
Ringgold Road. After approximately 5 miles turn left onto Houston Valley Road.
After 2 miles turn onto Capehart Road. Follow Capehart Road into the Houston
Valley OHV parking lot.

The closest town is Dalton, Georgia, which is about 25 miles east of the
picnic area. Dalton has numerous grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations
available.

<h2>Overview</h2>
<p>Pocket Picnic Shelter is a reservable shelter in the Pocket Recreation Area located in Armuchee, Ga.  The shelter is a great location to hold family get togethers, birthday parties, work luncheons, retirement parties, or any other celebration one can think of.</p>

<p>The Pocket Recreation Area is located within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in the ridges and valleys of northwest Georgia. The shelter sits in a low lying geographical area between Horn and Mill mountains. This low lying area was formed by limestone dissolving, leaving the ridges above and valleys below. These ridges are rich in iron ore "pockets" giving this area its name. Deer and turkeys thrive in the surrounding forest. Spring wildflowers and autumn colors abound, showcasing the beauty of the region. Nearby trails and overlooks allow visitors to enjoy the National Forest from different perspectives. </p>

<p>The Pocket area is rich in cultural and historical history. In the mid-1800s until the Great Depression in the 1930s, this area consisted of two communities, Pocket and Zone. These communities consisted of farms, churches, home places, a grist mill, a saw mill, and a general store. Between 1938 and 1942, the Pocket Recreation Area was the site of a thriving Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) work camp for Company 3435. The men of the CCC, under the guidance of the U.S. Forest Service, had a tremendous impact on the area. They were involved in building roads, bridges, erosion control, tree planting, and the construction of recreation sites. The CCC played an instrumental part in helping local farmers with erosion control and road maintenance. Remnants of the camp can be found throughout the Pocket Recreation Area. These remnants include foundations for buildings, drainange trenches, and the retaining walls and spring box in the picnic area. </p>

<p>Activities in the Pocket Recreation Area include camping, picnicking, hiking, and trout fishing in nearby Johns Creek.</p>
<h2>Recreation</h2>
<p>The Pocket Picnic Shelter is located in the Pocket Picnic Area, part of the Pocket Recreation Area.  The Pocket Recreation Area consists of the picnic shelter, a picnic area, and a campground.  Camping, picnicking, hiking, birding, and wildflower viewing are all popular activities in the area. </p>

<p>The trail heads for the Pocket Loop Trail and Pocket Interpretive Trail are located in the picnic area. A Civilian Conservation Corps spring box is located in the creek, releasing cold water from deep below the surface. This is a great place to wade and cool off during long summer days.  </p>

<p>Hiking the 1.5 mile Pocket Interpretive Trail contains signs to provide an educational walk through multiple types of habitat where an array of wildlife and plant species can be found. The 2.5 mile Pocket Loop Trail provides a similar, but longer experience, sharing some of the same tread with the interpretive trail.   </p>

<p>Visitors also enjoy the 3.5-mile Pocket Foot Trail that loops between the picnic area and a nearby campground. Interpretive signs are placed along the route, including a brief description of the area. It is a relatively wide path and a nice, easy walk.</p>

<p>Trout fishing in Johns Creek (less than a mile away) is a great place to wet a line and fill one's creel. Georgia DNR fishing regulations apply. </p>

<h2>Facilities</h2>
<p>The accessible picnic shelter is available for group use with a reservation. If the area is not reserved, it is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The facility can accommodate up to 75 people and 20 vehicles.<br><br>The site is equipped with tables and grills. Accessible vault toilets are also provided. Drinking water is available across the parking area in the campground.</p>
<h2>Natural Features</h2>
<p>The Pocket Picnic Shelter is located off the Ridge and Valley Scenic Byway in northwest, Ga.</p>

<p>Surrounded by the horseshoe ridges formed by Horn and Mill Mountains, the Pocket is located in a geographical region known as the Ridge and Valley Province of Northwest Georgia, part of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. This region consists of long narrow ridges, sweeping valleys, creeks, streams, ponds, and waterfalls. </p>

<p>A small creek, locally known as Spring Branch (a tributary to nearby Johns Creek) meanders through the recreation area, providing a cool relief in the summer months. An informational interpretive loop trail and the Pocket Loop Trail leads visitors through a mixed pine/oak forest, past a small wildlife pond, and near wildlife food plots. This variety of natural features provides habitat for deer, turkeys, a multitude of song birds, and aquatic life, such as amphibians and beavers. </p>

<p>The Johns Mountain Overlook and the Keown Falls Picnic Area are found nearby. These two beautiful recreation sites showcase the natural features of the surrounding region.</p>

<h2>Nearby Attractions</h2>
<p><strong>Johns Creek Trout Fishing Area:</strong> A great place to go trout fishing managed by the U.S. Forest Service and GA DNR with the help of Trout Unlimited.</p>

<p>Leaving the campground, turn left onto Pocket Road. After 1/4 mile stay right at the Y. After 1 mile look for legal pull-offs for fishing access. (Georgia DNR fishing regulations apply). </p>

<p><strong>Johns Mountain Overlook:</strong> A U.S. Forest Service overlook where visitors can view the Armuchee Valley and distant Taylor's Ridge.</p>

<p>Leaving the campground, turn right onto Pocket Road. After 3 miles turn left at the Johns Mountain Overlook entrance sign (Forest Service Road 208). Follow FSR 208 for 2 miles to the overlook.  </p>

<p><strong>Keown Falls Picnic Area and Trailhead:</strong> A beautiful place to picnic with a loop hike to Keown Falls. Best seen after rain.</p>

<p>Leaving the campground, turn right onto Pocket Road. After 2 miles turn left at the Keown Falls Trailhead entrance sign (Forest Service Road 702). Follow FSR 702 for half a mile. The Keown Falls trail is a 3 mile loop trail. The falls are about 1 miles when following the trail counter clockwise. </p>

<p><strong>Chestnut Mountain Shooting Range (Fee Area, see Recreation.gov page </strong><a href="https://www.recreation.gov/activitypass/9b26cdb8-77c3-11eb-85f2-9a53ea04ed79" rel="nofollow"><strong>Chestnut Mountain Shooting Range</strong></a><strong> ):</strong> A U.S. Forest Service shooting range to hone your shooting skills. You must provide your own firearm, ammunition, and targets.  </p>

<p>Leaving the campground, turn right onto Pocket Road. After 4.6 miles turn right onto Furnace Creek Road. After 2 miles on Furnace Creek Road, turn right onto GA-136. Follow GA-136 for 5.7 miles. Turn left at the Chestnut Mountain Shooting Range entrance sign (Forest Service Road 212). Follow FSR 212 for a half mile.   </p>
