### Overview

Visitors to the rolling, brushy hills near Shasta Lake in northern California
will find off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding challenges for all abilities. More
than 250 miles of roads and trails are open to motorcyclists, all-terrain
vehicle drivers and four-wheelers. The area is near massive Shasta Dam and
Shasta Lake, and there are overlooks of the Sacramento River below the dam.
Wildlife species in the area include osprey, bald eagle, mule deer, and bear.
This area was named after former U. S. Congressman, Eugene Chappie. The area
is partially by the California State Parks OHV program.

Chappie/Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area

Shasta Dam and reservoir are features of the Central Valley Project -
Shasta/Trinity Divisions. Recreation at the reservoir is managed by the U.S.
Forest Service under agreement with the Bureau of Reclamation, Northern
California Area Office. Created by a dam across the Sacramento River, Shasta
Reservoir is the largest reservoir in California with 370 miles of shoreline.
Located 12 miles north of Redding, the reservoir provides excellent year-round
bank or boat fishing. Reservoir holds 16 varieties of fish, including
sturgeon. Trout species include rainbow, German brown, kamaloops, and kokanee
salmon. Bass species include largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. Catfish
species include channel cats, white cats, and brown bullheads. Smaller species
include crappie and bluegill. During the early spring bank anglers can catch
trout. During the summer the trout seek cooler temperatures with the most
effective trolling at depths of 30 to 70 feet. Almost any rocky area on the
lake may produce bass. Best catfish taking is in the spring and summer months
at night. Although there are white sturgeon in the lake, few anglers fish for
these giant bottom-feeders. Record sturgeon catch was in 1977, 190 pounds and
8 feet, 2 inches long. Reclamation is offering free public tours of Shasta
Dam. Tours are offered daily at 9 and 11 a.m. and at 1 and 3 p.m. Guests
should park at the Visitor Center and are asked to leave all belongings in
their vehicles. No purses, cameras or bags of any kind or cell phones will be
allowed on the tour. Guided tours will start at the second elevator tower on
the dam and will require the visitor to pass through a metal detector. The
tour, which takes about 45 minutes, will take visitors down in the elevator,
out to the spillway area, and will include a view inside the power plant.
Since Reclamation's priorities are to provide for the safety of visitors,
employees, and our facilities, considerable security modifications and
precautions have been put in place, while still offering the public an
opportunity to tour the dam. The Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday
8:00 to 4:30 and on the weekends from 8:00 to 5:00.

The area east of Keswick Reservoir has a network of over 25 miles of dirt
single-track that connect Shasta Dam to the Sacramento River Trail. Most
sections of trail offer gentle grades and are suitable for all age groups.
There are several side trails that lead to vistas or access the reservoirs
edge and seasonal cascades.

The Hornbeck Trail was the first trail segment in this network to be built and
follows the path of a historic mining railroad on the east side of the river.
It is named for a volunteer who was instrumental in its development.
Volunteers unofficially named the trail segment for volunteer Chuck Hornbeck,
a retired civil engineer and Shasta College engineering instructor, who was a
leader in determining the trail route and recording important historic
information. The trail segment follows the path of a historic mining railroad
called the “Old Diggings Railroad,” the “Quartz Hill Railroad,” or the
“Mammoth Mine Railroad." The rail line was used in the early 1900s to haul
quartz used as flux for nearby copper smelting at Kennett (now under Shasta
Lake).

The Upper Sacramento and Lower Sacramento Ditch trails follow the alignment of
the historic Sacramento water ditch. The F.B. trail winds through some steep
terrain and offers amazing views of Keswick Reservoir. The Chamise Peak trail
climbs to the top of Chamise Peak where one is rewarded with an amazing 360
degree view of the surrounding area.

open grass area with benches, picnic tables, cornhole cement boards, and BBQ
grills. Although swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing are popular

this particular spot is not an area to do any of those due to strong water
currents generated from the Carr Powerhouse.

There are two accessible boat ramps near this facility. Fairview boat ramp access to Trinity Lake is 3 miles north and Pine Cove boat ramp access to Lewiston Lake 
is 2 miles south. Motorized boats are limited up to 10 miles per hour.<br/><br/>

Lewiston Lake is a popular destination for kayakers. Hikers can enjoy the 2-mile North Lakeshore Trail.<h2>Natural Features</h2>
The campground is situated at an elevation of 1,900 feet on the western shore of Lewiston Lake at the base of Trinity Dam. Some deciduous and conifer trees are found around the campground, but it is mostly unshaded.<br/><br/>

Cold, crystal-clear Lewiston Lake is roughly 5 miles long and a half-mile wide. It features a mountainous shoreline and a topography that ranges from

single sites with an average back in around 16ft. This campground has vault

a regular basis until 1981. It is one of the few remaining historic lookouts
on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The structure at Girard Ridge is
reportedly the oldest lookout of its particular design remaining in
California. It was restored to its original character in 1997. The lookout
offers primitive accommodations, but visitors are rewarded with panoramic
views of the mountains during the day and bright, starry skies at night.
Staying at Girard Ridge Lookout is an unforgettable experience.

there are opportunities to hike, hunt, and fish. Hikers can walk north on the

GIRARD RIDGE LOOKOUT

## Overview

Gregory Beach Camping/Day Use Area is located on the Sacramento River Arm of
Shasta Lake, it has trash and portable restrooms provided in season. This is a
shoreline area and doesn't have designated sites.

This Campground is on a First Come - First Serve Basis, vistors are required
to physically be at the campground to purchase and claim a site. You must also
occupy the area the day you pay for it, no advance payments. We encourage our
visitors to download the recreation.gov app to take advantage of the Scan &
Pay Option. There is also a Iron Ranger on site that you can pay with cash or
check.

Dispersed Area has no facilities and is pack in/pack out in winter months
typically Mid September to Mid May - no fees are due during that time.

a check refund. A refund will be processed within 30 days of receipt and

Note! Refund requests made during or after departure can only be processed
when approved by the facility management staff based upon local policy.

Refunds for Emergency Closures: In the event of an emergency closure the
Recreation.gov will attempt to notify users and offer alternate dates and
sites (as appropriate). If this is not possible, reservations will be canceled
and all fees paid will be refunded.

Refunds for Naturally Occurring Events: Refunds will not be issued for
naturally occurring events like rain, snow, wind, smoke, extreme temperature,
low lake level, etc.

<h2>Overview</h2>
<p>Gregory Beach Camping/Day Use Area is located on the Sacramento River Arm of Shasta Lake, it has trash and portable restrooms provided in season. This is a shoreline area and doesn't have designated sites.  </p>
<p>This Campground is on a First Come - First Serve Basis, vistors are required to physically be at the campground to purchase and claim a site. You must also occupy the area the day you pay for it, no advance payments. We encourage our visitors to download the recreation.gov app to take advantage of the Scan & Pay Option. There is also a Iron Ranger on site that you can pay with cash or check. </p>
<p>Dispersed Area has no facilities and is pack in/pack out in winter months typically Mid September to Mid May - no fees are due during that time.</p>

The campground is a single loop and is moderately to thickly wooded with a mix
of oak and pine trees that provide plenty of shade during the summer (80% +
cover). The understory, which consists of manzanita, blackberries, poison oak,
tree fern, wild grape and a variety of native grasses and forbs provide
limited privacy between campsites. When the lake level is high, the bank is
moderately sloped to provide access to the water. As the lake level drops, it
exposes a steep drop off to the water, especially on the side of the
campground nearest Gregory Beach. There is a boat ramp nearby at Antlers. Lake
activities include fishing, swimming, motorized and non-motorized boating, and
watersports.  
Each site has a picnic table, and a fire ring.

motorized boating and water skiing. A public boat ramp is provided near the
