Burnt Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is comprised of 24,980 acres
designated as having wilderness characteristics. There are open sloping
sagebrush and grass-covered hills in the north and east and steep terrain with
scattered pockets of Douglas-fir and juniper in the south and west. Several
large rock outcroppings dominate the center, and a small lake is nestled in
the trees of the southwestern portion of the WSA.

### **Motorized Use Restrictions**

All motorized and mechanized use is limited to designated boundary and cherry-
stem routes only.

The WSA is closed to all motorized use seasonally from October 1st to December
31st to provide a non-motorized hunting experience.

43 CFR 8340.5 defines an off-road vehicle as any motorized vehicle capable of,
or designed for, travel on or immediately over land, water, or other natural
terrain. This includes but is not limited to snowmobiles, all-terrain
vehicles, pickups, and sport utility vehicles. Non-motorized travel such as
walking, horse-back riding, or cross-skiing is allowed year-round.

Wilderness Study Area. This steep west-sloping terrain includes vegetation of
sagebrush-grass with scattered mountain mahogany. At 12,655 feet, Borah Peak
is the highest point in Idaho. This spectacular mountain gives the visitor the
feeling of approaching the "top of the world" and seems to spread out as far
as the eye can see. The area also provides outstanding hiking, backpacking,
wildlife viewing, hunting cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sightseeing and
photography opportunities.

scenic area has a gorgeous view of the Lost River Range and offers

late winter. There are 26 camp sites, an RV hook ups and dump station,
restrooms, drinking water, boat ramp and interpretive trail. Mackay Reservoir
offers a boat ramp providing access to the reservoir for jet skiing, water
skiing and sailing . Other boat launches along the reservoir (and one
downstream of the dam) are also available.

Wilderness Study Area. The steep and mountainous terrain of this area is home
to deer, antelope, elk and sage grouse. The higher peaks and ridges are
dominated by rock cliffs. Douglas-fir and mountain mahogany blanket areas at
the higher elevations. The lower slopes are covered with sagebrush grasses and
forbs. The diversity of terrain and rugged landscape here offers challenging
recreation for hunting, hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing, cross-country
skiing and snowshoeing.

the eastern side. The dominant vegetation is sagebrush-grass with patches of
Douglas-fir. The nearby area has outstanding opportunities for hiking,
camping, backpacking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hunting, photography,
bird watching and sightseeing.
